Local Biography ~ Harold La Borde and Kwailan La Borde

Harold Charles La Borde and Kwailan Yew Woon are the first Trinidadians to sail around the world.

Harold Charles La Borde was born in June 1933 and educated at Rosary Boys' RC and Belmont Boys Secondary schools

Mary Kwailan La Borde (nee Yew Woon), who was also born in 1933. Educated at Belmont Girls' R.C. School and then Holy Name Convent

Harold now in his Seventies, Harold La Borde was born in Trinidad, West Indies, in 1933, of parents with a rich mixture of blood in their veins - French, Negro, Spanish and Caribe

Harold La Borde wrote, “I am not quite sure when the urge to sail around the world got into me. It may have started on our own waterfront where, as a boy, I watched the trading schooners come and go; or perhaps it was after the time some friends and I made our first open-water passage in a small boat to Grenada, some 80 miles away from our island

Married ,7th June 1959 to Kwailan, On his first journey across the high seas, he and Kwailan, along with their friend, Buck Wong Chong, sailed to England in 1960 on the 26 ft vessel, ‘Humming Bird I’, which had neither engine, nor toilet and had oil lamps for lighting.

His wife Kwailan along with their 5 year old son, Pierre, born on May 12, 1964 took off from Trinidad on an adventure to sail around the world on a boat which Harold built with his own hands at Point Cumana started in 1963. It was a 40 ft ketch, dubbed 'Hummingbird II'

During this epic adventure she even gave birth to her second son, Andre, in Auckland, New Zealand.

Harold, Kwailan and Pierre sailed from the Trinidad Yacht Club on February 2, 1969 watched by hundreds including the Prime Minister Dr Eric Williams and six of Pierre’s little friends to be received by a crowd that included the late Prime Minister, Dr Eric Williams. They were later awarded T&T’s highest honour, the Trinity Cross

The couple embarked on a third journey around the world again from 1984–1986 on the 'Humming Bird III', which Harold also built, took 8 years and was launched on his birthday in June 1983. Harold his wife Kwailan and eldest son set off in May 1984 to follow the southern route around the world, used by the Clipper Ships.

In 1992, the La Bordes sailed across the Atlantic once again as bonafide ambassadors for Trinidad and Tobago in order to hand over the national flag to the country's team at the Barcelona Olympic Games

Harold and Mary Kwailan La Borde are pioneers in local and international voyaging. Their adventurous spirit has led to numerous journeys on both land and sea, but ultimately, it is the journey that they have endured for some fifty-two years of married life

Today they own and operate a small marina named Hummingbird Marine in Trinidad.

In San Fernando: Library Corner

Mayor Kazim Hosein ~ Work-Site preparation for the restoration of the Train has begun

A walk along Harris Promenade in San Fernando is a memory lane for many.

Moving closer to Library corner in San Fernando sits one of our cherished relics the Locomotive “train” that was left over from the sugar industry

The Sugar industry played a vital role in building the City of San Fernando and will always be part of our rich heritage

Over the years, the train has been a victim of the elements amongst others.

The Mayor and the Council in discussion with the citizenry have started the process to preserve this relic from further neglect.

Trinidad and Tobago Named Happiest Country in the Caribbean
The destination’s bourgeoning culinary scene, world renowned beaches and numerous festivals bring out the happiness in both locals and visitors alike

http://www.blackenterprise.com/lifestyl ... caribbean/

Ever wonder why Trinis are so happy? Well, it’s not just because of Carnival and Callaloo. According to the World Happiness Report from the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network released on September 8th, the destination ranked highest in happiness in the Caribbean and 31st in the world. This isn’t surprising however. With its vibrant lifestyle, dynamic mix of culture, booming business center, strong government and, of course, Carnival, which is the largest cultural festival in the Caribbean, there’s no surprise that the dual-island nation of Trinidad and Tobago leads the way in happiness in the Caribbean.

According to the study there were six key variables factored into its conclusions: “Real GDP per capita, healthy life expectancy, having someone to count on, perceived freedom to make life choices, freedom from corruption and generosity.”

The destination’s bourgeoning culinary scene and numerous festivals, combined with local steel pan music and world-renowned beaches, bring out the happiness in both locals and visitors alike. Whether sampling street food on “The Avenue” [Ariapita Avenue], moving to the music at cultural and food festivals, getting a taste of adventure in the mountains of Trinidador unwinding on Pigeon Point beach in Tobago, Trinbagonians have plenty of reasons to smile.

In addition, with 15 public holidays last year, Trinidad and Tobago is among the top ten countries in the world for the number of public holidays. Who wouldn’t want a few extra days off from work/school per year?
