Actually, it would be interesting to find out why BWIA was carrying Air Jamaica signage in 1966.

at that time we were British West Indian Airlines so maybe just maybe BWIA was affiliated with all West Indies Airlines

'Wreckage may be cleared for removal by tomorrow'

Trinidad Express Newspaper National News of Trinidad and Tobago

August 3, 2011

The wreckage of Caribbean Airlines Flight BW523 could be cleared for removal from where it broke up at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) by tomorrow.

Minister of Transport and Hydraulics Robeson Benn made this disclosure last evening in a telephone interview with the Guyana Chronicle, when he gave an update on the investigations.

He explained that a "wrap up" meeting was concluded last evening with the all the stakeholders, including the team from the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

"The investigations are continuing, we had a briefing this afternoon, and all members of the NTSB team, save one, will be departing as they have gathered their data," Benn revealed.

The Minister noted that the local officials have been briefed on the data gathered so far and will be awaiting the final report.

As to what will happen pending the final word on what caused the accident, he said, "Hopefully, the plane will be cleared for removal from the runway; if it is cleared tomorrow, then it will be removed to a hangar at the CJIA."

Under the leadership of the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), investigators from across the Caribbean, United States and the aircraft's manufacturer, Boeing, had arrived in Guyana to conduct investigations into what caused the accident.

The "black box", or the flight data recorder from the plane was removed and taken to the NTSB headquarters in the United States earlier this week.

The data recovered from this device will be analysed by investigators there, and vital information gathered will shed some light on what transpired at 1.32 a.m. on Saturday, as the plane, carrying 154 passengers and six crew members, careened off the runway and broke in two.

As to the suspected cause of the accident, Minister Benn stressed that this can only be determined after a thorough investigation had been completed.

He emphasised that all procedures were followed in response to the crash.

The Caribbean Airlines Ltd (CAL) aircraft involved in last Saturday’s landing mishap at Guyana, will be removed today from the airport field site where it landed, according to Transport Minister Devant Maharaj. Maharaj has been monitoring events in Guyana daily since the aircraft touched down in a miraculous landing at Cheddi Jagan Airport after skidding down the runway. It ended up narrowly escaping plunging down a 200-foot ravine. Despite 30 injuries, there were no fatalities among the 157 passengers and six crew members. The crew, headed by pilot Fareed Dean, returned home on Tuesday after giving statements to a multi-disciplinary probe team, comprising US, Guyanese, T&T and Surinamese aviation experts. Maharaj said he was informed yesterday that initial investigative work was being completed.

On Sunday, Guyana’s Transport Minister Robeson Ben had said in an interview a preliminary report was expected by yesterday or tomorrow and further technical probes and reports would then be done towards a final report on the cause of the incident. Maharaj said yesterday some of the experts from the probe team, including some from the National Transportation and Safety Board (NTSB) and Boeing—manufacturers of the plane—were leaving Guyana between today and tomorrow.

A T&T Civil Aviation team, headed by its chairman Ramesh Lutchmedial, who was part of the probe is also returning later today, Maharaj added. The minister said the aircraft was being moved from the site off the airport runway and would be relocated to a hangar in the airport. Lutchmedial, speaking from Guyana, said he would be among those presiding over the removal of the plane from the site. Maharaj said the move would be handled by CAL in accordance with a plan by T&T and Guyanese civil aviation authorities.

He added: “The aircraft will be removed intact. There will not be any sectioning or removal of its wings or other parts.” Maharaj said the cockpit voice recorder—the black box—was still being reviewed by NTSB officials in the US. On another issue, Maharaj said CAL had agreed to put on flights to assist stranded LIAT passengers at Piarco who had been scheduled to travel to Grenada and were stuck at the airport for the past few days. Maharaj said CAL had started ferrying some of the passengers from yesterday after appeals were made.

Minister of Transport, Mr. Devant Maharaj said, effective August 8, flight number BW 523 would no longer exist. He said once an aircraft is involved in a mishap the flight number retires.

That might very well be it. It used to operate as BWA 522/523.

522 being the beginning leg from Cheddi Jagan and 523 being the ending leg from JFK

Fatalities - 1 737-800
Cause of death - severe trauma to thoracic region cause head to detach from body.
