Health Minister: More patients in need of dialysis
August 5 2015
If you don’t take care of yourself you may end up in one of the new Dialysis Units.
This warning came from Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan at the opening of a new Nephrology Dialysis Unit at the Port of Spain General Hospital.
Dr Khan said an obesity and diabetes epidemic over the last 10 years has left more patients in need of dialysis treatment.
And due to limited resources in the public sector, patients had to be sent to private institutions for treatment.
The new unit has 12 dialysis machines, compared to the 5 stations previously available at the hospital.
It will be able to service an average of 40 persons a day.
Dr Khan is now aiming to open similar Nephrology Units at the Eric Williams Medical Centre and the San Fernando Hospital

Which three?
KAMLA Persad-Bissessar must “stand down” as Prime Minister until her name is cleared in several criminal investigations currently being undertaken by the police, chair of the Caribbean Regional Chapter of the Global Organisation of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC) Mary King has said.
King was fired from Persad-Bissessar's Cabinet in May 2011 for the inappropriate awarding of a $100,000 contract to a company, Ixanos, in which her family has an interest.
She is currently the chair of GOPAC Caribbean and the secretary of its Global Board of Directors.
King on Wednesdayissued a press release from GOPAC saying that Persad-Bissessar must stand down until her name is cleared.
“I am deeply concerned about the conflict of interest of constitutional proportions that has arisen in Trinidad and Tobago,” King stated.
King said the prime minister is head of the National Security Council of which the Police Commissioner is a member and this has the possibility of tainting the investigations.
“The Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago is the Head of the National Security Council.
“The Commissioner of Police, the Head of the Defence Force and the Commissioner of Prisons among others are also on the Council,” King said.
King said Persad-Bissessar is currently being investigated by the police on three “criminal matters”.
The three investigations are:
1 The Prime Minister was allegedly bribed by Ishwar Galbaransingh and Steve Ferguson, who are wanted by the United States of America (USA) for money laundering, to keep them out of jail locally and to prevent them being extradited to the USA.
2 The Prime Minister is being investigated by the police for her involvement in the Emailgate affair where it is alleged that she, the then Attorney General and others conspired to pervert the course of justice which by reports in the public domain the murder of a journalist.
3 A plant-like substance, like marijuana, was found at her residence which is also being investigated by the police.
“These investigations do not require her to remove herself from her parliamentary position as a representative of her constituency.
“However as Head of the National Security Council of which the Commissioner of Police is a member compromises his position as the head of the unit that is investigating the matters relating to the Prime Minister,” King said.
King said “international standards” require that Persad-Bissessar “stand down” to avoid any constitutional crisis.
“Under all international standards, the only way to avoid a constitutional crisis would be for Mrs Kamla Persad-Bissessar to stand down from the position of Prime Minister, until such time as the police investigations have concluded without laying of criminal charges against her,” King said.

Plipdeco profits up 28 per cent
Published:
Wednesday, August 5, 2015
Point Lisas Industrial Port Development Corporation Limited (Plipdeco) has achieved a 28 per cent increase in profit before tax of $15.6 million for the half year ended June 30.
The state owned company’s latest financial report, which was posted to the T&T Stock Exchange yesterday, shows the increased profit was due to a nine per cent growth in consolidated revenues over the comparative period in 2014.
Commenting on Plipdeco’s performance, chairman Ian Atherly said: “This was mainly as a result of a 15 per cent increase in volume for containerised cargo operations. In fact, growth was recorded in all areas of containerised cargo where the port saw a three per cent increase in imports, a five per cent increase in exports and a 67 per cent increase in transshipment cargo.
“The revenue gains as a result of the increase in containerised cargo were partially offset by the decrease in general cargo where a 17 per cent decrease in volumes was recorded as a consequence of an 89 per cent decrease in exports and a two per cent decrease in imports.”
Atherly said total assets grew to $2.32 billion, an increase of two per cent from December 2014’s asset base of $2.26 billion. There was also strong improvement in working capital from $49 million in December 2014 to $68 million in June 2015.
He said the company plans to continue with its growth and development drive by engaging in infrastructural improvements, development projects and equipment acquisitions throughout the port and industrial estate, all aimed at improving productivity and efficiency in a globally competitive environment.

Pan music resonates to a Master’s degree at UWI level
By MIRANDA LA ROSE Wednesday, August 5 2015
GOVERNMENT will support the implementation of a master’s degree programme in music, offering a major in steel pan music, and will assist students undertaking such programmes with funding through the Government Assistance for Tuition Expenses (GATE), says Tertiary Education Minister, Fazal Karim.
Karim told Newsday yesterday that the Ministry of Tertiary Education and Skills Training (MTEST) “is committed to the production of the steelpan, tuning of the instrument, and teaching of pan music.
“We will fast-track the implementation of academic and vocational programmes on the steelpan with Pan Trinbago, tertiary level institutions, and other ministries.” Responding to the call of Pan Trinbago president, Keith Diaz, for the University of the West Indies (UWI) to conduct a Music Master’s degree programme with a major in the steelpan, Karim said he was aware of discussions that Pan Trinbago has had with UWI, University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) and the College of Science, Technology and Applied Arts of TT (COSTAATT), to conduct academic programmes in steelpan music.
Diaz has noted that the Northern Illinois University in the United States of America has a master’s degree programme in music that offers the steelpan music as major.
“All local institutions in the tertiary sector,” Karim said, “are supportive of the academic aspects and other dimensions of the steelpan.” However, apart from offering academic and vocational programmes, he said it was necessary that all stakeholders work together to develop, deliver and patent all the programmes, and have them accredited by the Accreditation Council of TT.
The MTEST will be willing to approve funding through GATE for accredited programmes, related to the study of the steelpan.
The immediate objective, he said, was to establish a committee comprising representatives of Pan Trinbago, MTEST, Ministry of Arts and Multiculturalism, Ministry of Tourism, UWI, UTT, COSTAATT, MIC Institute of Technology, and the National Training Agency (NTA) to fast track the development and delivery of steel pan music, at the academic and vocational levels.
They will also have to develop standards of competence and certifying the repertoire of skills in the construct of the steelband, he said.
The steelpan, he said, was no longer being seen as only a means of entertainment, but as a means for the diversification of the economy through the development of pan theatres in communities as part of the arts and cultural tourism, and the entertainment industry.
Noting that the International Conference and Panorama was underway in Port-of- Spain, he said, he expected further discussions and decisions will be taken on several issues, relating to the national instrument.
