$18,000 is actually a good price eh if you just count 20% duty and 15% vat it's 18 grand cost price.

blackberry advice

Postby avenall » May 30th, 2012, 7:13 pm

This is my first time going to buy a blackberry. Anyone could give me advice on which is the best one i could buy second-hand? If you have ever experienced defects or disadvantages with the one you have can you please say so i would be able to know what are the disadvantages. I am looking to spend roughly about 1600 maximum.

[Partial article posted]

RIM's new woes seen speeding loss of BlackBerry users

Research In Motion's appointment of bankers to advise on drastic options, including an outright sale of the BlackBerry maker, may only hasten moves by major customers to offer their employees smartphones produced by rivals. An increasing number of top companies and government departments that were once devoted to the Blackberry are instead now giving some staff the option of using Apple Inc's iPhone or smartphones running off of Google Inc's Android-operating system.

There is now a real danger for RIM that such switching will gather pace and turn into a much bigger exodus of customers, mobile phone industry consultants and experts warned. The uncertainty surrounding RIM's future, and the possibility of a sale, is "scary to an end user," said John Hering, chief executive of Lookout, one of the world's biggest providers of mobile security products.

On Tuesday, RIM said it had hired deal-making bankers from JPMorgan Chase and Royal Bank of Canada to help it do a far-reaching review of its business. The Canadian company also shocked investors by reporting it expected a fiscal first-quarter loss, and said it was looking at a significant number of job cuts. Sources have indicated it may cut as many as 6,500 of its 16,500 jobs.

The company's share price has collapsed in the past year, and it is now only valued at about $5.4 billion, down from $84 billion at its peak in 2008. Excluding its cash and the estimated value of its patents, RIM's device business and its 78 million subscribers around the world are in aggregate worth less than $1 billion to investors. Retaining its customers' loyalty is a huge challenge.

There is still a chance.

If Apple could turn around from 90 days to bankruptcy in the mid-90s to now the #1 valuable company in the world (~ $550 Billion cap; ahead of Exxon Mobil and PetroChina), why can't a once powerhouse like RIM do it? They have valuable core assets. They just need leadership.

so i guess its too late for QNX???

waiting to see what all the trini ppl that live for BBM will do when RIM has to shut down and in extension shut down d server for BBM....a berry without BBM is just a phone with a keypad....

i does recommend ppl to have a berry on d side even if they have an iphone or android cuz of the convenience of having it in trinidad where there are so much users of BBM....but i dont suggest u buy any high end berry that costing $3000 + right now cuz in a timing it will be worth nothing...if i were to get back a BB right now i'd buy a 8520 or 8320

shame that the figures only apply to the us market, while RIM devices sell more units in other parts of the world besides the us, europe and even the caribbean included in the high sellers

but if apple could make a comeback anyone can

The danger to RIM in these countries are the cheap Android phones that could chew away at RIM's bottom line. Blackberry is a huge seller in 3rd world countries now. The have fast growing market in the African continent.

But still this is far from their core asset : enterprise. If the major contracts are lost in enterprise to iOS (that is making big in-roads) and later Android, it will stagnate technological growth of Blackberry devices if their modal market is the lowest end Blackberry's — then they will be wasting resources to develop and support the high end core.

RIM has to stop eff-ing around; deliver only one or two devices that has the best potential growth and stop wasting time fighting Apple, Google (and soon Microsoft) in losing battles.

Anyone have a digi bb 8520 curve which, for some reason, does not let its BBM work even with full EDGE?
Data services down, even after hard reboot and registering....
