Africa has recorded a 43% week-on-week rise in COVID-19 deaths. Hospital admissions have increased rapidly on the continent — causing a shortage of oxygen and intensive care beds.
“Deaths have climbed steeply for the past five weeks. This is a clear warning sign that hospitals in the most impacted countries are reaching a breaking point,” said Dr Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa.
“Under-resourced health systems in countries are facing dire shortages of the health workers, supplies, equipment and infrastructure needed to provide care to severely ill COVID-19 patients.”
Africa’s case fatality rate, which is the proportion of deaths among confirmed cases, stands at 2.6 per cent compared to the global average of 2.2 per cent.
Most of the recent deaths, or 83 per cent, occurred in Namibia, South Africa, Tunisia, Uganda and Zambia.
Six million cases
COVID-19 cases on the continent have risen for eight consecutive weeks, topping six million on Tuesday, WHO reported.
An additional one million cases were recorded over the past month, marking the shortest time to reach this grim milestone. Comparatively, it took roughly three months for cases to jump from four million to five million.
Delta, variants drive surge
The surge is being driven by public fatigue with key health measures and an increased spread of virus variants.
The Delta variant, the most transmissible, has been detected in 21 countries, while the Alpha and Beta variants have been found in more than 30 countries each.
Globally, there are four COVID-19 virus variants of concern. On Wednesday, a WHO emergency committee meeting in Geneva warned of the “strong likelihood” of new and possibly more dangerous variants emerging and spreading.

He's undoubtedly a troll but there are many who actually do think like him.
It's become obvious that Wuhan covid was never much of a huge threat to warm tropical climates, but these new strains especially Delta will lead a huge new third wave across the tropical third world.
I am hoping we will be ok once we vaccinate quickly enough, but I do fear and suspect our third wave will be just as bad as the 2nd wave.
This site is predicting a peak is October which could very well be true...

We don't know the long term effects of Coronavirus
People who get the chicken pox virus an get shingles later on in their life
"Shingles is caused by varicella zoster virus (VZV), the same virus that causes chickenpox. After a person recovers from chickenpox, the virus stays dormant (inactive) in their body. The virus can reactivate later, causing shingles."
So while it may seem ok to get Covid and you may get mild symptoms or even be asymptomatic - we have no idea what happens later on.
Same goes for vaccines as well.
True but can you name a modern vaccine that has long term side effects?
the closest in recent history would be Pandemrix but that has since disappeared after the narcolepsy cases

Fourth patient in Scarborough COVID-19 cluster has died
An additional patient death has been recorded in the cluster of COVID-19 cases at the Scarborough General Hospital.
This brings the total number of deaths associated with this cluster to four, of the 11 patients who tested positive for the virus.
Dr Anthony Thompson, COVID-19 Response Team Member in the Office of the County Medical Officer of Health gave an update on the SGH COVID-19 cluster while speaking at Tobago’s virtual health update today.
Four more healthcare workers tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the total number of staff infected to 31.
A medical records officer was among those testing positive for the virus, but the other 18 members of staff in that department tested negative.
Dr Thompson indicated that surveillance testing is ongoing in other departments.
In the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit 24 nurses were tested with six returning positive results. Fifteen nurses tested negative and results are pending for two others.

hope the media picks up the story and starts asking what % of Scarborough General staff are unvaxxed. Yes hospital employees have a right to refuse the vaccine but maybe they shouldn't be allowed to work in the hospital if it puts patients' lives at risk.
I'm gonna level this right here.hover11 wrote:Makes sense we already have a shortage of doctors ....when next ppl have life saving surgeries ask the doctor if he is vaccinatedpaid_influencer wrote:pugboy wrote:Thought those staff would have been jabbed very early

hover11 wrote:This mandatory vaccine talk making some believe its a cure, they would be immune from covid, they cannot contract or spread it, but that's just not the reality, vaccination just makes the symptoms mild and the (vaccinated) infected would most likely not have to be hospitalized. It doesn't mean they can't spread the virus and there are a few who still end up in the hospital. And lets not forget the virus is constantly mutating always needing the vaccines to be constantly updated.
And there's the fact that the China vaccine used here is not used in some countries due to China's tight lipped approach when it comes to information about the vaccine, but they were the same way when it came to the origin of the virus as well.

I guess they don't trust the science....paid_influencer wrote:hover11 wrote:Makes sense we already have a shortage of doctors ....when next ppl have life saving surgeries ask the doctor if he is vaccinatedpaid_influencer wrote:pugboy wrote:Thought those staff would have been jabbed very early

why would a doctor refuse the vaccine tho?
WHO warns that HIV infection increases risk of severe and critical COVID-19
15 July 2021
A new WHO report confirms that HIV infection is a significant independent risk factor for both severe/ critical COVID-19 presentation at hospital admission and in-hospital mortality. Overall, nearly a quarter (23.1%) of all people living with HIV who were hospitalized with COVID-19, died.
The report is based on clinical surveillance data from 37 countries regarding the risk of poor COVID-19 outcomes in people living with HIV (PLHIV) admitted to hospital for COVID-19.
It found that the risk of developing severe or fatal COVID-19 was 30% greater in people living with HIV compared to people without HIV infection. Underlying conditions such as diabetes and hypertension are common among people living with HIV. Among male person living with HIV over the age of 65 years, diabetes and hypertension were associated with an increased risk of more severe and fatal COVID-19. These conditions are known to put people at increased risk of severe disease and death.
This highlights the need for people living with HIV to stay as healthy as possible, regularly access and take their ARV medications and prevent and manage underlying conditions. This also means that people living with HIV – independent of their immune status - should be prioritized for vaccination in most settings.
