wow , it is a pity that you are mis informing the general public like this.

AGAIN : I worked on the PTAX project. I know every single thing on the project. When PP came into power the very next day they sent a letter to my office stating to DISMANTLE everything, and DISSOLVE THE ENTIRE UNIT( i laugh because i essentially voted myself out of a nice work lol). The office is closed , my position there has since been changed and myself as well as the entire team has since been split up into different ministries , all officers gave up every single thread of documents and its stored away for refernece on future projects, the entire multimillion dollar IT infrstruture that took two years to fully deploy has since been re-purposed for another project and the PTAX system cannot and fucntion without the core IT backbone at all.

if you know something i do not , please state your FACTS

i need some clarification! land that had no previous owner, how do u calculate the "old value" on this land? Is it calculated base on current market? And if so, will it be subjected to 10%?

Duke: Bring back the property tax
By Renuka Singh
Story Created: Jun 4, 2012 at 11:53 PM ECT
Story Updated: Jun 4, 2012 at 11:53 PM ECT
Public Services Association (PSA) president Watson Duke yesterday called for the reinstatement of the property tax in order to boost Government revenue and offset the union's new salary proposal for public servants.
Duke, at a media conference at the union's Abercromby Street office in Port of Spain, said the property tax must be "skewed" so that only the rich pay for multiple properties, while the poorer home owners are not taxed.
"We are not in the mood for any five per cent, six per cent or even nine per cent and so in our revisiting of the facts of the economy over the last few months, we are now convinced that the property tax needs to be reinstated," Duke said yesterday.
He said in levying that tax, the Government would be able to capture untapped resources and finances.
"It is a market that is controlled by the ruling class. The ruling class has been enjoying a type of vice that only they could enjoy. They own property all over the place and they are not paying for it," he said.
He said, however, the "ordinary" worker has to deal with a rent increase at the whim of the property owner.
"Every time there's mention of property tax, rent goes up. It is unfair," he said.
He said the PSA has adopted the theme "affordable living, it is our fundamental right" going into the 2011-2013 negotiation period. Duke said with that theme in mind, the PSA is seeking a minimum wage of $7,000 for public servants.
"We not going to move from that," he said.
"We want at the end of the day to have a just increase to afford the basic things in life. If the Government is of the opinion that property tax is a bad word, we suggest to them to look at a tax for multi-million dollar properties," he said.
"Extract from the rich that which was taken from the poor," he said.
Duke said the PSA was now embarking on a social agenda which would result in a series of protests to highlight inadequacies in the living conditions of the public servants. He said he was not sure what the total revenue could be collected but was sure it was enough to pay the public servants their just due.
He said despite this call, there was no reason for an umbrella revenue authority, because the money could be collected through the Board of Inland Revenue and Customs and Excise.

i am not rich, but fair is fair, u can't just take something from someone and give it to some one who does not.

the property tax should be allowed, but modified to be simpler: make up different classes of land use. assign each class a number. the tax some one would pay for a property would be the total square area of that property multiplied by the number the property is classed in.
so, 5000 sq ft of residence in gasparillo would incur the same tax as 5000sq ft of residence in barataria.

All of these damn sh!t stains should be fired!!!!!!! We as ordinary citizens of T&T, namley non-unionized, get no royalties from our oil and gas and yet we have to suffer with more tax and debt burdens for the next 20 years thanks to CLICO, HCU, Union demands, corruption, PeeOn Dem, etc........? And for those who have not been around long enough, the union is one of the most corrupt organizations in this country.

And for those who want to rant, don't tell me about benefits that I don't qualify for because I am to far up the ladder or to educated or make to much money. I paid my flippin dues a long time ago without anyone's help. So if these burdens on society want more make the low life hoes work harder!

Rent will still go up if they put it back though. What he should be pushing for us for the HDC to start to give out houses so the number of people renting will fall creating a glut in the market to hopefully drive down rent and house prices.
