Max: I sent e-mails to integrity body for authentication

Thursday, May 23, 2013

Former President George Maxwell Richards says he sent Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley’s e-mails to the Integrity Commission for authentication after receiving them from Rowley last year. Speaking from his Maracas, St Joseph, home yesterday, Richards confirmed what Rowley and PNM PRO Faris Al-Rawi had both said about the e-mails being sent to Richards six months ago, after they were slipped to Rowley by a whistle-blower. Richards demitted office in March.

Rowley, speaking about the e-mails in Parliament on Monday, said he passed them to the head of state and awaited a reply. He said he also had called on the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Integrity Commission to probe them and for a new Integrity Commission board to be appointed to probe the matter. The last board’s term ended on March 13.

Yesterday, Richards said Rowley indeed given him the e-mails months ago. He said: “I passed them on to the Integrity Commission, as those e-mails, on the face of it, needed authentication, so the most appropriate body to handle that independently would have been the Integrity Commission.” Richards said it was not done with any fuss, bother or publicity but as a matter of course.

He said it was done in complete confidence so that the commission would first check out the authenticity of the e-mails and carry out any appropriate investigation that may have been required. Richards added: “I want to make it abundantly clear that this was done in absolute confidence and secrecy.” He said he was enjoying his retirement, which he described as a “mixed blessing.”

Contacted yesterday, Integrity Commission communications officer Mervyn Crichlow said the commission would issue a statement on the status of the e-mails. On Tuesday, Al-Rawi said the PNM, after forwarding the e-mails, had been awaiting word on the issue. He noted a new Integrity Commission was yet to be sworn in.

On March 12, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar was reported to have said she had asked Richards to allow the new commission to be appointed by then President-designate Anthony Carmona. The Prime Minister said she requested that because the commission’s term was expiring a few days before Richards’ own term ended and it would have been be more practical for Carmona, who was sworn in on March 18, to make the appointments. She said Richards had obliged.

Since Carmona’s appointment, one of his priority tasks has been trying to finalise the appointment of a new Integrity Commission board. Yesterday, T&T Guardian contacted President’s House to ask when a new board would be appointed. A statement from the presidency said the head of state was addressing the appointment of commission members “with diligence and gravitas, despite the heavy workload of President Carmona.

“A major challenge is the reluctance to serve by persons who have been tentatively approached,” it also said. An official said it was hoped the matter would be finalised some time next month. The official added a short list of names had been compiled but intense scrutiny of the individuals, including one-on-one interviews, were being done, adding that Carmona, as an attorney and former judge, was very “hands-on and is going over everything in this matter from top to bottom.”

Well said lies, just like the emails in question.

How about the pp encouraging an independent investigation and the subsequent public disclosure of the findings? That way they give rowley nuff rope to hang himself. U doh find that sound more like a plan to ensure that rowley has no political future?

Now that this thread is going somewhere lets just for the sake of it ask the question, If the Integrity Commission is chosen by as the right committee to verify authenticity and since MARCH a new Integrity Commission has not been appointed then we all are left to come to our conclusions here as to why not :|

That fact is not a lie and day by day the circumstantial evidence increases against the P.P

Carry on

I agree with the former president position that 'on the face of it' these e-mails aint looking right and could have been a source of embrassment to his exalted office.
Based on his remarks in the article he appears to have found no compelling reason to 'call out the national guard'.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Mervyn Richardson said yesterday:

" Told of the public's lack of confidence in the police and whether it would not be better to seek international help, given the magnitude of the allegations and the possible involvement of high-ranking government officials, he said: “I believe we have the competence. That is not to say that all competence resides within us but I believe if we find that it is beyond us, then we will see. "

So let's recap.

The leader of the opposition put his whole political career (30 sumthing years) and that of all the opposition members on the line by reading our pieces of e-mails implicating the gov't in conspiracy to murder and other delicious stuff.

The gov't responds by flaming the opposition by calling them liars and so on and the opposition responds by walking out in the middle of the PM's response.

Now let's think for a moment.

Who was the reporter whom Anil Roberts called out on a platform recently? Why?

Is Rowley and company so desperate to bring down the gov't that they will manufacture e-mails?

Is the gov't so smug that they will dance all the way around the allegations but never actually deny them?

Did you notice the only thing they denied was the existence of anan@gmail.com?

Even the PM admitted that her e-mail address was real?

Did anyone read the "discredited" Scott Drug Report? Part of it was put in a thread some time ago.

The alleged 'conspiracy to murder" plot is history repeating itself almost 30 years later.

As some have said, either way this turns out, we the people, are well and truly screwed.

some are real but it doesnt mean thats its true. You could write up a string of email replies in ms word using peopl's real email addresses. The pic i posted earlier is of a print screen from Kristal (devant maharaj fiancee) she tried replying to 'anan@gmail.com' how can anyone take any part of the email seriously when they made up an address. Some blind followers trying really hard to make it stick..good luck!

I agree that if Rowley was to make a case he should have done some serious homework. The opposition walkout (a la the Panday years) damaged their case badly.

I still would not pour oil on all the allegations - e-mail addresses notwithstanding.

This whole debacle brings into serious focus the dangers associated with acting on infor. rec'd from unnamed sources and the general lack of proper evaluation of the validity of stuff so acquired before going "running yuh mouth".
The PNM and all other political parties must critically analyse e-mails and other forms of communication/documents to avoid being manipulated into public embarassment.
These elected representatives and leaders must certainly not be allowed abuse the freedoms given to them in parliament.
Any investigation into the authenticity of these e-mails may very well require the informant to come forward and validate the how and where sourced.
A true trini who feels our democracy is under threat and can prove these e-mails, should be bold enough to step-up and sink the perpetrators.
However,I am the first to admit that our country seems to be heavily populated with many who love to conduct cowardly character assasinations by hiding under all kinds 'covers'.
Is really 'one set ah children running around in long pants and dresses' only playing man and woman.
