Sinanan announces plan to reduce Chaguanas traffic
Wednesday 12 July 2023
The Ministry of Works and Transport has announced a three-phase plan to alleviate traffic in Chaguanas, including a long-term plan of expanding the Sir Solomon Hochoy highway.
Works Minister Rohan Sinanan told Newsday the designs were complete, but most of the work still had to be tendered out, so he could not yet calculate the cost or give a time frame for the work.
“The project is being done in three phases, and right now we are into Phase I. That is the widening of bridges and existing roads and removing some turns to make it easier.”
He said the second phase involved adding lanes and the third would be the long-term plan of an interchange on the highway.
In a release on Tuesday, the ministry announced an executive team from the ministry, including Sinanan, met on Monday with members of the Chaguanas Chamber of Industry and Commerce as well as businesspeople to address traffic in the borough and the surrounding areas.
At the meeting, Hayden Phillip, director of the Programme for Upgrading Roads Efficiency, updated the Chamber on several key future initiatives. They include expanding the Solomon Hochoy Highway to three lanes from Chaguanas to the Chase Village Highway, reconstructing the Bridal Road Bridge, and rehabilitating the Caroni Road from Silver Bridge to the Uriah Butler Highway.
Other ongoing projects were improving Phase 2A of the Endeavour Interchange, as well as various sections of the Uriah Butler Highway from Chaguanas to Grand Bazaar.
Sinanan said different projects were already in different stages of progress for the first phase, including preparation work such as building new drains to allow the widening of roads.
Asked about a time frame, he said, “They have started, and it will be an ongoing work. We will see as we go along.”

Three hundred electric buses and a transport hub are in the making for central Trinidad, according to Minister in the Ministry of Works and Transport Richie Sookhai.Sookhai made the revelation during a PNM meeting at Enterprise, Chaguanas, on Thursday.
He said the transport hub would assist in the traffic problem plaguing the borough.
Sookhai explained that initial data collected by the ministry indicated that $150 million worth of productivity is lost annually in this country because of traffic along the north and southbound lanes of the Uriah Butler Highway and the Sir Solomon Hochoy Highway.
He said the Public Transport Service Corporation will be procuring 300 electric buses to service communities in the hope of bringing some form of relief to commuters, the first phase of which is expected to roll off by the end of this year.
“The tenders are closed and we are now into the evaluation phase,” Sookhai said.
He said once confidence is built up in the public transport system, more people will be inclined to use it.
Sookhai claimed that while the UNC was in power, they did little to solve the traffic problems in Chaguanas. He also claimed $10 million was squandered by the UNC to construct a walkover near the Divali Nagar that is only used once a year. He said the UNC also installed a roundabout at Rodney Road that created more traffic and blocked off several access arteries.
“You tell me, before you put your vote don’t get fooled,” he urged.
Sookhai said several road rehabilitation programmes were also scheduled to start soon. He said the Endeavour Road, Caroni Savannah Road, Caparo Valley/Brasso Road and the Southern Main Road were listed for rehabilitation.

Seems like they going to do a roundabout before the flyover northbound. (taken from MOWT FB page)
i swear a tuner suggested that in a thread before?

anybody who use that road could have come up with that common sense solution
glad to see dem big engineers finally coming up with that idea ... i hope it dont cost tax payers 20 mil for a lil roundabout
from chandanagore to d triangle its time to reconnect dem side roads from d southern main road to the highway too ... i also said this while back

Works have begun on the Sir Solomon Hochoy Highway (SSHH).
This project involves the construction of an additional lane northbound and southbound along SSHH between Brentwood Mall and Chase Village Interchange, road rehabilitation, reconfiguration of traffic lanes, and other ancillary works.
The primary objective of the project is to directly address the challenges associated with traffic congestion in the area.

Construction on the first package is being done by Junior Sammy Contractors Limited from the bridge in Chaguanas to Endeavour near Starbucks.
The second package by Seereeram Bros Ltd will continue onwards, up to Chase Village. This project is also expected to continue until San Fernando though a timeline for that was not provided.
With this new project, cable barriers will be phased out as it was said to be too expensive and inappropriate for highways.
To prevent cars from crossing the median, the government will invest in New Jersey barriers which can be found on the Churchill-Roosevelt Highway.

I don't think they have to do construction to widen the bridge. BUT they have to consider the load bearing of the flyover. If 3 full 20-ton trucks pass at the same time at resonance speed? I guess the engineers already figured out all that.https://www.guardian.co.tt/news/65m-highway-work-to-alleviate-traffic-for-southerners-6.2.1893357.028992a863
