Sharp unveils 'affordable' 80-inch television

Sharp has taken the wraps off the largest consumer LCD, the 80-inch LC-80LE632U, which will be available in early October for $5,499.

The non-Quattron LC-80LE632U features a full-array LED backlight, but according to Sharp isn't a "premium" television and so is missing features like local dimming and even 3D. It does feature a 1080p resolution and 120Hz mode, though.

The TV also features "smart," wireless functionality with "hundreds of apps" including Netflix and Vudu and a remote setup service called Aquos Advantage Live.

These specifications and features are in line with the 70-inch LC-70LE732U, a product we lauded for its "very good picture quality, especially in bright rooms."

Sharp recently brought the Elite brand back from the dead, and also used its event in New York to show off its aluminum-framed PRO-70X5FD.

Sharp's 70-inch and 80-inch TVs are now the largest LCD TVs on the market, with their only competitors being rear projection in the form of Mitsubishi's 3D Home Cinema range.

Sharp brings back the Elite brand with jumbo LCDs

Pioneer licensed the Elite brand to Sharp earlier this year, gaining at least the title of one the most highly respected line of HDTVs ever to be produced. In fact, even though Pioneer stopped making TVs in 2009, its Kuro PLASMA panels are still regarded as the best-performing TVs ever made and all new HDTV sets are compared against them.

Image

Today Sharp announced the rebirth of the Elite brand with two high-end LED-based LCD panels, a 60-inch and a 70-inch model. The two TVs carry enormous price tags: $6,000 for the 60-inch PRO-60X5FD and $8,500 for the 70-inch PRO-70X5FD. To put those prices in perspective, our current best-performing HDTV of 2011 is the Panasonic TC-PVT30 series and the 65-inch model can be had for $3,800.

Both sets utilize full-array local-dimming, which means the LEDs behind the screen can be dimmed or brightened in different areas to correspond to darker or brighter areas of the picture. Full array local-dimming is relatively uncommon these days, but the result is excellent contrast that no other LCD-based TV can muster. Sony's full-array local dimmer, the XBR-HX929 series, is the best LCD we've tested in 2011.

Sharp is also trumpeting a technology called Intelligent Variable Contrast, which is designed to automatically control the brightness and backlight depending on the image being displaying on the TV. That may sound like a good idea on paper, but we generally turn off dynamically adjusting picture modes, as they often do more harm than good.

Like other high-end TVs, the Sharp Elites have built-in Wi-Fi and a full suite of streaming media services, including Netflix, Vudu, YouTube, and Pandora. They're also 3D-compatible and include two sets of active shutter glasses. For what it's worth, the TVs are also certified by both THX and ISF.

The big question is whether these panels will live up to Sharp's performance claims to warrant the ultrahigh prices. The new Elite TVs were shown off in a controlled demonstration at a press event in New York this morning and we had a chance to briefly check them out. Like other LCDs with local-dimming, the sets were certainly able to produce very deep blacks, although we could also see some blooming in high contrast images. Without having other TVs on hand for comparison and a variety of program material to view, it's hard to get a good idea of how they really perform, so we'll withhold our judgment until we're able to test the Elite sets in the lab.

Anybody here using a free to air reciever (FTA)?

I want to cancel my direct tv subscription. If I buy a fta receiver off amazon would it work in place of the direct tv receiver? Plug and play? Using the direct tv dish that is.
Or would I have to do some advance configurations?

A new pair of Paradigm Atoms will run you about 450US in Barbados, the nearest dealership. There is no authorised dealer in Trinidad.

To be honest, the Atoms are amazing, but a little on the small side for serious music and HT listening. Sub has to do a lot of work.

The Monitors should be a little better.

Much Thanks Sir.

the Onkyo has 110W per channel
I take it the speakers you are using for front L&R are power hungry and need more than 110W each?

make sure they dont drown out the center channel.
The center channel is perhaps the most important speaker in a HT setup.

Yes the wharfedale valdus 500 are power hungry (200w).
Most people play them with extra power.

that's a good amp. but for $6000 I could get an Alesis reference amp or beringer or even a crown for less than that.
and I doubt the onkyo matching them.

Logitech's Harmony Link
transforms your iOS device or Android phone into a universal remote

Logitech isn't exactly a stranger to universal remotes, and if you've been yearning for an Android or iOS aimed solution from the Swiss company, its new $100 Harmony Link should have you covered. The Link is a WiFi-enabled infrared puck and app combo, that allows you to control up to eight devices in your home theater from the comfort of your touchscreen sans pesky dongles or cases. After downloading a free app, pocket-sized iDevices and Android smartphones can act as universal remotes over your home network, while iPad users also get the benefit of personalized TV listings from Rovi. It's similar in price and function to Peel's Fruit, but drops the extra wireless dongle and adds a native iPad app. Notably, the Link can interface with multiple iPads at once, and Logitech's also thrown in a mini IR blaster to make controlling your AV gear that much easier. If another one of your home theater dreams just came true, the Harmony Link is up for pre-order now from Logitech and due out in October.
