can't believe Spain struggled like that against Finland....
Del Bosque should not have taken Villa off with only a one goal advantage....and y pick Valdes over De Gea....sheesh

1-1 it ended....with Ramos scoring on his 100th appearance....

Return of the King? Jose Mourinho and Chelsea 'agree provisional deal to make him manager again'
25 Mar 2013 23:00

But keep that champagne on ice, Blues fans - there are hurdles still to clear and he's said to have similiar agreement with PSG too
Building Bridges: Mourinho is believed to have made up with Roman Abramovich Building Bridges: Mourinho is believed to have made up with Roman Abramovich

Jose Mourinho is close to a Chelsea return after Roman Abramovich agreed to swallow his pride and reappoint the "Special One" as manager.

Real Madrid coach Mourinho was due to be at Stamford Bridge on Monday night to watch Russia play Brazil as part of a whistle-stop visit to London.

And, six years after his tempestuous relationship with Abramovich ended in combustion, Mourinho is on the brink of consenting to go back "home" to the Blues.

It is understood Mourinho and Abramovich HAVE reached a provisional agreement for the Portuguese to take over from interim Rafa Benitez this summer on a three-year contract.

There are still significant stumbling blocks before any deal can be signed though, with Anzhi Makhachkala's Dutch veteran Guus Hiddink lined up as a potential fall-back option if the Mourinho move goes wrong.

Mourinho is believed to have made it clear that he will only consider a return if Chelsea finish in the top four, qualifying for next season's Champions League.

More contentiously - and what could cause a major hurdle - the Portuguese is concerned about working in an environment where technical director Michael Emenalo and chief executive Ron Gourlay hold the levers of power.

Also, sources in France and Spain insist Mourinho's agent, Jorge Mendes, has struck a similar provisional deal with Qatari-owned Paris Saint-Germain, who are ready to dump ex-Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti if his expensively-assembled side do not win Ligue 1 this season.

But, with Mourinho determined to pack his bags and leave Real at the end of the season irrespective of whether he becomes the first manager to win the Champions League with three different clubs, it seems that the hopes and prayers of most Blues fans could be answered.

The 50-year-old has played a blatant game of tease with would-be suitors over recent weeks, including suggesting he could go back to a former club but that he might be ready to unleash a "surprise".

What is evident, though, is that Abramovich - falsely reported by one Russian TV station to have been arrested in the United States on Monday - is ready to admit he made the biggest mistake of his reign when he parted company with Mourinho in 2007.

While going back to the Portuguese was deemed unthinkable two years ago, the situation has now altered on the back of the troubled and short-lived reigns of Andre Villas-Boas, Roberto Di Matteo and interim boss Benitez.

Didier Drogba and Guus Hiddink after Chelsea beat Liverpool (Pic:Getty) Guus chase: Hiddink is in the frame to return if Mourinho doesn't

Mourinho has never hidden his wish to return to England - he has a home in London and his daughter is set to embark on studies in the capital this autumn - even though going back to the Bridge might scupper any ambitions he has of succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.

The mercurial nature of Mourinho - and the likelihood that he will try to force the issue when the final round of contract negotiations begins in the summer - could yet see him move elsewhere.

But, on Monday night, Chelsea's greatest and most successful manager was closer to going back to SW6 than at any time since he left to the anguished disbelief of the Blues fans following a poor start to the 2007-08 season.

Europa League winners to get Champions League place

The Europa League winners will get a place in the following season's Champions League from the 2015-16 season, a UEFA source told Reuters on Thursday.

The change will boost the prestige of UEFA's secondary competition which has become largely over-shadowed by the Champions League in terms of prize money, credibility and media coverage over the last decade.

The decision, approved at this week's executive committee meeting in London, will be announced at UEFA's annual Congress on Friday.

The decision followed months of discussions between Europe's top clubs in the European Club Association (ECA) and UEFA's top officials including president Michel Platini.

Despite the presence of many of Europe's leading clubs who have missed out on the Champions League, the Europa League retains an aura of being a consolation prize for the also-rans.

Although a central marketing concept was added to the competition when it was rebranded in 2009, matches are played on Thursdays and are often shown on non-peak viewing channels.

They also generate a tiny percentage of income the Champions League can bring.

UEFA general secretary Gianni Infantino refused to comment on the planned change when he gave a news conference on Thursday, but said an announcement would be made at Friday's Congress.

"Discussions have taken place about the Europa League and some changes are needed for that competition," he said.

The Europa League, which succeeded the UEFA Cup in 2009-10 but retains the same trophy, features many of Europe's leading clubs who have missed out on a Champions League place.

There is already a connection between the two competitions as the eight clubs who finish third in their Champions League groups transfer into the Europa League's knockout rounds.

This season they included last year's Champions League winners Chelsea.

Despite the initial reticence of some of Chelsea's players about competing in it, the Premier League won the competition last week by beating Benfica 2-1 in a highly competitive final in Amsterdam.

^yeh yuh know Villa is mih boy since early Valencia days. Guess its an example how a player may not return to how he was before after an injury.

I def think a change in clubs will do him well now though. I never ever supported that move to barca for him, he the kind of player who needs to be THE man at a club and he will thrive.

even though Villa has won trophies under Barca....he has never been able to show his full worth and potential like he did at Valencia....it's sad what a great player like him has been reduced to....the couple of times he played after his injury he proven he has it but yet he spends the majority of time on the bench....

am really hoping he leaves at the end of this season as well....he deserves so much better....
