Local Diary

Are we racist , classist or clannish?

I have to admit that driving to South always gets me confused with the new interchange, by default I'm one of those people who doesn't cross Grand Bazaar unless I have to, even though I was born in San Fernando and spent 11 years growing up in the "country".

When I was told about Mawnin Neighbor, the biggest fete to culminate the Point Fortin Borough Day weekend, the reviews from people who had been before were all positive and they insisted I make the journey to check it out myself.

On the flip side , to the North people who have no idea what exists outside of the Port of Spain bubble , they were convinced that a fete in Point could be nothing but "ghetto" (their words) and could not fathom why on earth I was willing to leave my comfort zone and see what it was all about .

Well I'm pretty glad I did; Mawnin Neighbor was anything but "ghetto", it was one of the best parties I've been to for the year. Lovely venue , I really liked the layout, awesome vibe and great music. The people were very hospitable, to that end we stopped on the way by a strangers house in Rousillac and were welcomed with drinks, and made many more new friends at the fete itself.

Post fete I woke up thinking why would anyone think because an event that's predominantly patronized by one ethnic group who may not be in the same social circles as themselves immediately conclude that it's "ghetto"? Point Fortin Borough Day draws a huge crowd, with persons flying in to Trinidad especially for the celebration. And I spotted many a familiar face who run in the same social circles as myself . It's ironic that Las Lap ended prematurely due to a fight that no one spoke about publicly but a fete that was incident free would not be patronized by some of the same people who went to Las Lap.

Trinidadians suffer from a very classist and clannish mentality, sorry to say, reflected in everything from which Carnival band you choose to play with to who you want to rub shoulders with at a fete. This reminds me of the year I played solo in YUMA and was told the same thing about that band as well.

In the end life should be about experiences, expanding out of the myopic thinking, clan mentality and beyond the pseudo snobbery. As much as one would like to think that they are better than others based on vapid materialistic values , you are not. My advice is to try it, you just might like it!

2016 we there !

I guess it's a small operation with no distribution capabilities, I will be going to tobago within the year so I might visit them if I get some time.

Directions to Brasso Seco local chocolate factory?

Many of us hear them regularly in the forest but may not be aware of the insect that makes the sound or what they look like

Local Horses Helping Humans

This was Luke's second session and already the transformation in him has begun.

Whereas last week he was very anxious and fearful, and fussed for the most of the session this week he ran inside by himself straight to JoJo's stall where he tried to get me to open the stall by putting my hands over the door latch and saying "open, open".

He then continued to participate in everything we asked him to do, feeding the horses, leading and grooming JoJo, and of course riding, which he could not wait to do.

While he was on the pony Luke sang and vocalised and responded with the word "go" when asked to make the pony walk.

Luke loves riding so much that he did not want to get off when we were finished, and also did not want to leave at all.

Luke is already showing so much potential and such great progress

Such is the power of horses.

The Band ~ Hot Chocolate

"Errol lived a good life and he proved to be a wonderful co-author on many songs we composed together.”

Those were the sentiments of Trinidad born Tony Wilson on the passing of Jamaican born singer and songwriter Errol Brown, lead singer of the British soul band ‘Hot Chocolate.’

The local musician was part of the formation of the band, with one of their most popular tracks being ‘You Sexy Thing.’

Wilson said that he and Brown shared ‘a friendship which started even before our ''Hot Chocolate'' days... May he rest in peace.’

He also sent condolences to Brown’s family, friends and fans and was sorrowful to hear about Brown’s passing at the age of 71 on Wednesday6thMay
