THE wildly popular Crime Watch show hosted by Ian Alleyne will no longer be aired on TV6, the station said in a release yesterday.
In a brief statement, TV6 disclosed that Alleyne’s contract has not been renewed as his “demands” could not be met.
TV6 stated:
“We wish to inform our loyal viewers that Crime Watch is no longer on the scheduled programmes on TV6. Our contract with Mr Ian Alleyne ended on April 10, 2013 .
“The contract was not renewed as we were not able to meet Mr Alleyne’s demands.
“We thank Mr Alleyne for his services and wish him the very best in any future efforts.Viewers can look forward to our usual line-up of exciting programmes.”
Alleyne could not be reached yesterday for comment.
This follows a tumultuous year for the super popular host, who was on and off the air periodically following charges against him last year stemming from the airing of a video that showed a 13-year-old girl being raped.
The tape was shown on Crime Watch on three separate occasions in April 2012 and resulted in Alleyne being charged under the Sexual Offences Act.
He was also charged with resisting arrest by ASP Ajith Persad in the execution of his (Persad’s) duties—to which Alleyne pleaded not guilty.
When Alleyne first appeared before Chief Magistrate Marcia Ayers-Caesar last April, he pleaded not guilty to four charges, but on March 7, he changed his plea to guilty on the three Sexual Offences charges.
On March 19 this year, Ayers-Caesar fined Alleyne a total of $30,000, with respect to the charges.
Alleyne was represented by attorney Om Lalla, who often sat in as host for Alleyne on Crime Watch.
Lalla had argued that his client aired the video with the intention of having the rapist identified and arrested. Less then 48 hours after the airing of the video, a suspect was arrested, Lalla said in court.
Alleyne’s arrest last year was as dramatic as his show often was.
A squad from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, led by ASP Persad, arrived at the Express Building on Independence Square fully outfitted and locked down the compound.
Alleyne eventually left the studio on the second floor, where his show was streamed live, and handed himself over.
Up to late yesterday, people wanting to speak with Alleyne about their problems and attempting to get on his show were still coming to Express House, where they were given telephone numbers to get in touch with him.
