I hope people can see that Raymond really has national interest at heart. He kept the politics out and attacked the MOU solely on the terms within the document itself.

To all the people who was calling him a dunce PNM because he supports the property tax, what say you now?

As expected, is somebody else fault...

Charles: Duke to blame
Elizabeth Williams

Tobago House of Assembly (THA) Chief Secretary Kelvin Charles yesterday launched a stinging attack on THA Minority Leader Watson Duke for the failure of the Tobago Sandals project. Charles said blood is on the hands of Duke, with respect to the withdrawal of the project.

“I say to you, ladies and gentlemen, I have only just begun to speak on this issue, but I say to you today that if there is blood on this project, then that blood is on the hands of the Minority Leader,” Charles said at the weekly THA media briefing.

The Chief Secretary also criticised Duke for describing workers in the hotel sector in a negative light— “as bellboys, bellgirls and water fetchers”...

I wanna kno 2 little things
1-who/what gave rowlee the authority & when whilst he was only the leader of the opposition, not in the ruling regime at that point, so he had no authority to make any deals on the nation's behalf to approach that potbellied pig from sandals & making whatever shady deals then to force upon trinis now?
2-anyone ever hear of an opposition leader in any country on this planet do anything even remotely similar?

One thing yuh hadda admire Sh!tkicker for is he does stand up and take the questions, even if he does deflect 99.9% of them by bullying the reporters and blaming the opposition...

Buh that exercise in damage control will only appease his support base. If he really want to put this matter to rest let him have a debate with Afra Raymond. 10 -1 Baldylocks go sh!t he pants before it finish.

Out of nowhere...

SANDALS’ EARTHQUAKE FAULT LINE

The Sandals resort in Tobago, which the luxury all-inclusive brand have just dumped, directly straddled the South West Tobago Fault System, the most vulnerable earthquake fault system in Trinidad & Tobago.

The map shown here, a Geological Map of Tobago by A.W. Snoke and Colleagues 1997, clearly illustrates the fault line running right through the middle of Sandals’ resort in Golden Grove Buccoo.

A source told me this information “has huge implications for the build cost of the (Sandals) resort” because they would have to design for “very high earthquake impact”.

Had the government and Sandals factored in the extra construction costs that this extra vulnerability might have necessitated? Were they even aware that such a fault runs through the development site?

Those issues were put to both parties on December 11th 2018 as part of a wider series of questions, along with a copy of the map featured here.

They were asked: “Were you aware of the project sitting on this most vulnerable fault line? Has either party taken this extra vulnerability into account when factoring in seismic building code costs over and above the minimum required? In T&T there are no enforceable building codes in law.”

No comment on the earthquake fault system was received from Sandals or Minister Stuart Young. Sandals were prompted again to reply to this question a few days later but never did so.

According to UWI’s Seismic Research Centre (SRC), of the three fault zones in T&T, this one is the most vulnerable to earthquakes, with shallow depths generally less than 15km. They say that “it is the only fault with which earthquakes have been confidently associated”.

On 22 April 1997 a 6.1 magnitude quake struck causing $18M worth of damage to Tobago.

In her paper, “Eastern Caribbean Earthquakes – Past, Present and Future; Implications for Trinidad & Tobago”, Dr Joan Latchman of UWI’s SRC says that “research into the 1982 Tobago earthquakes revealed the potential for earthquakes in the magnitude range 6.0–6.9. Further research has strengthened the case for even larger magnitude earthquakes near Tobago”.

To put that in perspective, the 6.3 magnitude earthquake that struck Christchurch in New Zealand at a depth of 6km in 2011 killed 185 people and flattened much of the city centre.

Dr Latchman confirmed her “research has been on the S.W. Tobago Fault System and both my theses may be referenced here at the Seismic Research Centre (SRC) and the Main Library at The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus. Copies are also with both disaster preparedness agencies in Trinidad and Tobago.”

“Therefore,” she said, “those charged with the responsibility to progress this development have the current, relevant science available to guide their decision making.”

But did they?

If Sandals and the government didn’t know their project lay in the middle of a major earthquake fault zone, they were made aware but declined to answer any questions on it. The question of that fault line is much more significant now they have announced they are pulling out of Tobago. It would be helpful if they would care to comment now.

We shouldnt pretend they even started to dream about geotechnical assessments on the proposed site. This is something that the geoscientists would have known but they would not have been consulted.

The ruling party would use this as a fine partial scapegoat though, very nice.

not sure if a repost, but a comment by a minister on the 'extractive' tourism MNC's

more or less, they have to deal with the same problems that those opposed to sandals foresee, in this MOU .

This was the direct fallout to that.

The people that run sandals have a serious entitlement and saviour complex. The Observer is Butch personal attack dog.
