I came across this story on CNN's Facebook page. It's very touching and shows just how much courage those with cancer have.

Her name is Olivia Wise...

"Olivia is a fighter and has gone through the fire," a family member says.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
Olivia Wise, 16, has an inoperable brain tumor
She recently recorded Katy Perry's "Roar"
Perry responded, telling Wise, "I love you. A lot of people love you"

(CNN) -- When she was healthy, Olivia Wise used to sit in front of her locker at school and sing for her friends.

She loved learning new things, and she wanted to be a pediatrician.

Olivia is just 16, and she is dying of an inoperable brain tumor.

In September, knowing that there was no more treatment available, the Toronto teen went to a recording studio to immortalize her voice -- one that has brought to joy to her family and friends in her short life.

She sang Katy Perry's hit "Roar."

In the video made of her recording, she sits meekly in a wheelchair, unable to stand or catch her breath.

And then she gets to the first chorus.

" 'Cause I am a champion, and you're gonna hear me roar."

Her eyes squint, and a smile stretches across her face.

Her joy is infectious. People in the studio begin to dance.

As the song goes, Olivia sings, "I got the eye of a tiger, a fighter, dancing through the fire."

A few more chords, and the corners of her mouth rise again.

"Olivia is a fighter and has gone through the fire," her cousin wrote in the post under the video posting on YouTube. "In fact, she was going through the fire while she recorded this song, but you wouldn't know it, because she was dancing right through it."

That recording was made on September 6. In the weeks that have followed, Wise's condition has deteriorated, but the response to her video has gone viral. The Liv Wise Fund, started in her name in support of brain tumor research, has raised more than $27,000, and the video got enough attention to prompt a response from Perry about how moved she was by Olivia.

"You sounded great," Perry said in a video she sent to the family, which was also posted to YouTube. "I love you. A lot of people love you. ... Keep roaring."

Wise is at home now, and her family is making her as comfortable as possible. She is only conscious for moments at a time, her family said.

"Her health is really bad, she's at the end," her cousin Jeff Kassel said. "She is still conscious at times and taking it all in."

Wise was vacationing in Florida in January 2012 when she had a seizure. She was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of brain cancer.

Immediately, she knew the prognosis was bad, but her mother says she has barely complained.

"Every day, she wished for a cure, and rarely succumbed to negative thoughts," her mom said.

She insisted on keeping up with her studies until just a few weeks ago.

"To tell the truth, her diagnosis didn't change her personality," her mom said. "It only enhanced it. She took the news in a mature, reasonable, responsible way. ... Even in the most difficult moments, she managed to bring laughter and friendship to all that were caring for her."

She woke up each day with a goal to find something bright, to be happy, her mom said. And she wasn't afraid of being vulnerable.

So when a family friend with a recording studio offered her the opportunity, she went for it.

"It was spontaneous," Kassel said. "And we didn't know with her health if she would be able to do it, but she did. For a 16-year-old, this is becoming her legacy, and it's such a beautiful thing."

Clifford and the other 'warriors for life' bring a clarity to why and how life should be cherished and celebrated which demonstrate how truly foolish the lesser challenges we encounter and fret over really are.
If the journey we have been iinvited to take in this thread doesn't help us to redefine our priorities,I don't know what would.
Many of us take too much for granted!

And I hope that you beat this thing. May God be with you and your family. I see u use the term "we" instead of "I"all the time. It shows that it's not only the person that has the cancer that goes through the emotions but it all of those close to them.

The mere mentioning of the word "cancer" almost always evokes strong emotion. Many of us know someone with cancer and sadly, they are no longer with us today.

As I had stated before, the word cancer seemed strange coming out of my own mouth.
I lost a very good cousin when he was only 17.

He suffered.

The cancer had spread so rapidly that by the time he was diagnosed at 16, the disease had spread so rapidly that he was beyond the reach of the drugs at that time.

I was away for those years and my Mom would tell me about how in the late stages, how frail he had become.

Joshua had become like a small child in size, he wasn't able to eat anything solid. My Mom would hold his head up and feed him soup and at times all he could do was "hold the food" in his mouth. Often times he would go on himself, and he would tell my mom : "Aunty? I've made a mess".

He was so strong, his dignity even at death's door is one of the greatest things I will remember about him.

And that's why cancer frightens me too.

Yes, I may "appear" strong and determined to live....but deep down inside I tremble at the prospect of deteriorating in front of my wife, my brother...my sisters.

Cancer not only eats away at your body, but can...in a very subtle way break down your mind, your very desire. It can rob you of the will to fight.

It is there with me when I go to sleep and there when I get up. Sometimes...it gives me a break...I'll feel like NOTHINGS wrong with me...my body will feel just like it did 3yrs ago. I'll be walking, like in the savannah the other day, and the air seemed so fresh, the birds were whistling away, the grass....so green. The sky was so clear.

It is times like those that make you appreciate life and LIVING.

It is also the reason I am writing this diary...with you my friends.
That through my experiences...maybe even when I am gone, that others would be comforted, would have been able to find solace, that they too may be encouraged as I have to reach out, humbly and help their fellow man.

Be back in a minute

On behalf of all of us who have been inspired by your thread, we wish you and your family a Happy and Holy Christmas 2013. At least you have been blessed to see another Christmas.

Maybe this story will put Christmas 2013 in perspective for many of us who have lived way beyond 8 years of age.

'Our little angel got her pink glittery wings': Girl, 8, who had thousands sing carols to her as one of her last wishes dies on Christmas morning

Delaney Brown suffered from a rare form of childhood cancer called acute myeloid leukemia with monosomy 7
She was given just days to live by doctors last week and died this morning
Spoke with pop star Taylor Swift among other bucket list items
10,0000 people came out to sing Christmas carols to her on Saturday

By Daily Mail Reporter

PUBLISHED: 16:15 GMT, 25 December 2013 | UPDATED: 17:42 GMT, 25 December 2013

A young girl with terminal cancer has passed away after her plight gained national attention.

Delaney 'Laney' Brown of West Reading, Pennsylvania passed away early Christmas morning.

One of the last kind gifts she received was the support of thousands of strangers who came to her front lawn to sing Christmas carols on Saturday night.

That pick-me-up came the day after she knocked another dream- speaking with Taylor Swift- off her bucket list on her eighth birthday.

Image
Last picture: Laney's mother and father were by her side when she passed away at home in West Reading, Pennsylvania just after 3am on Christmas morning

Laney died early Wednesday morning with her relatives updating her followers with her status on the 'Team Laney' Facebook page.

'My heart breaks right now. Our little angel on earth earned her pink glittery angel wings in heaven. She took her last breath at home in her bed at 3:10 surrounded by all her family and friends. I miss her so much already,' the latest update from about 5am on Christmas morning read.

Followers were well aware that Laney's health had taken a turn for the worse, with a lengthy update on Tuesday night telling how the family was praying for a Christmas miracle.

They had a check in with their doctors Tuesday night so that she could have a transfusion and new tests.

'We went up there hoping that maybe we would get a miracle and were just devastated hearing all those results,' the update read.

Last wish: Thousands gathered Saturday evening outside the West Reading, Pennsylvania home of 8-year-old Delaney Brown, who is dying from a rare form of cancer

Image
Touching: Over 4,000 people said they'd attend Delaney's sing-along and photos show a huge crowd outside the ailing 8-year-old's Pennsylvania home

Image
'I can hear you now!!! Love you!': Delaney showed her appreciation for the throng of Christmas well-wishers in a Facebook post on Saturday night as she lay stuck in her bed

'Our doctors focus then turned to how uncomfortable Laney had been for days. They were determined to get that under control. Our baby should not being struggling like this while on hospice.

'She is extremely comfortable right now so I guess not being able to hear her beautiful little voice again or see her gazing at me with those big blue eyes is the trade off we had to make.

'I lay next to her all day and all night kissing her beautiful face and stroking every finger on her tiny hands.

'Tonight is Christmas Eve, a time when they are usually getting excited about how they are going to sneak down stairs early to see what Santa got them and teasing each other about what they got for each other. I miss her voice so badly right now.'

Laney received her cancer diagnosis in May but the past week has been the toughest after doctors told the family that there was little else to be done.

‘Today we were told the worst news of our lives,’ wrote Delaney’s mom Jennifer Brown last week. ‘Laney has 70% cancer cells in her blood. If they would treat the cancer the virus that she has would kill her. And if they treat the virus the cancer will kill her.’

Laney suffered from a rare form of childhood cancer called acute myeloid leukemia with monosomy 7, ‘making her quite rare,’ according to the Facebook page.

Just 10 children a year are diagnosed with the illness in America.

The sweet but tough little girl, who loved fashion and swimming in the ocean, went through five rounds of radiation and a stem cell transplant.

Photos of the beautiful gathering, which over 4,000 people indicated on Facebook they’d attend, show throngs of supporters outside Delaney’s home—many in Santa hats and holding candles as they gave the brave girl her Christmas wish.

Singer Taylor Swift, who grew up in the neighboring town of Wyomissing, also helped Delaney knock an item off her bucket list.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation helped connect Swift with the Brown family last week when it became clear that Delaney has very little time left.

‘Laney was so nervous to talk to her because she is such a ‘famous celebrity,’ Jennifer Brown wrote on Facebook.

‘I was actually worried that when Taylor Facetimed her that she would be to scared to talk but Taylor was fabulous!! She really engaged Laney in conversation. Laney lit up and had a huge smile on her face. I can't thank Taylor enough.’

Image
Bucket list: Another wish on Delaney's bucket list was to be a baby sitter, which she got to fulfill last week when a friend of the family brought over their 7-week-old baby for her to watch over, though it left her weak

Image Image
Brave: The brave little girl has remained upbeat, her parents say, and was even courageous enough to mark off another wish from her list--to pet an alligator

bluefete....that was really touching. How hard it must have been for all those that loved her to spend their Christmas day mourning her loss.

There are millions suffering right now, from all sorts of maledictions. But cancer is one disease that wreaks havoc on not only those that it takes...but those that lose their loved ones.

I have seen many fight.....and some of us have lost that battle. The courage it takes to "put on a strong face" is beyond the human language to describe. And it is even more powerfully so, in the case of a child.

I have been relatively "ok" these past weeks. Although we still haven't found out what exactly is the cause of my trouble breathing at times.

Even after several tests, and many visits to the Lung Specialists....with thousands$ spent....we still have no clear answers.

The specialist put me on Spiriva for 2weeks and a heavy dose of steroids...to no effect.
My third trip to her, meant another paid vi$it and another test in the Lung Machine.

But still, it seems she was just "fishing".
With another inhaler...Symbacort and a low dosage of steroids (perhaps for the rest of my life) I am feeling a slight improvement.

The hope is that it is NOT Lung cancer....but damage done by the chemo I took last year.
As soon as the Clinics re-open, I'll be getting another x-ray of the lungs and by Feb...a Ct Scan to see if anything is in the lungs.

I am a fighter and will continue to contribute to this thread, as I realise just how much it means to others.

Thanks for all the well wishes and I look forward to being as busy as I can be in 2014.

It's been a long time since my last post.

Lots has happened in the 2months since.

I just got home from a very trying time emotionally at NRC.

Thought I'd fill you guys in....my friends, my brothers, sisters and fellow fighters.

Be back in a minute......

Really inspiring stuff there bluefete.

Sorry I've take so long to reply, been a tough few days...

3 weeks ago, my wife and I went to NRC to help a friend get some answers with regard to her mother's rapidly deteriorating condition due to cancer. I had been a patient there for the past 3 years and knew the ropes, so I knew how to ask the tough questions. Shirley Nanlal, was in discomfort and her daughter Muriel needed answers. After sitting with the 3 doctors we were told that the residual cells from her first surgery had spread to her uterus and colon... radiation was not viable as the cells had formed a "soup" in her abdominal cavity, making for an improbable target for the radiation beam. Chemo was her only option, but Shirley was weak...they tried some abdominal taps to drain the fluid but to no avail...The doctor said that the chemo would weaken her even further and IF she responded well, it would only give her a few months...maybe. That news hit Muriel very hard...here it was Mommy was on her feet in their shop just 3weeks ago and here the doctors were telling her all they had with her would be a few months.
As someone who has lost much to cancer...this really affected me too.

The results came back to determine if she could take the chemo...I went to the doctor, as we were growing weary....she shook her head. Shirley's kidneys were failing. She would never survive the chemo. The words every cancer fighter hates to hear came out the doctor's mouth: Palliative Care.
I went to Muriel and explained...she broke down on my shoulder. The doctors said Shirley should go home to be with her family rather than be in a hospital. I prayed for Muriel to have the strength to cope.
I was on my way several times this week to see Shirley...she was deteriorating Muriel said. As I sat eating before going back on the road today...Muriel called.
"Cliff? Mom passed this afternoon at 2.30. She stopped breathing and she died in my arms."
I could not speak, I could not think. I finally said..."I'm coming".
As I came thru the gate...I held Muriel and cried. Oh how hurt she must be feeling...but I could not contain myself. Even in this most trying time Muriel was doing well keeping it together. She said the night before after the doctor's gave Shirley some shots..she became lucid for a few precious moments and she told Muriel and Jo-anne to be strong and take care of their father. That she had lived a long time and it was time for her to go.

The sadness that overwhelmed me was immense. I had lost a friend, a lady who worked hard to provide for her family. Shirley Nanlal gave me something as well. She gave me her very first car that she bought brand new in 1974....It had sat under the shop front for 10yrs til one day Muriel saw me driving mine and flagged me off the highway...that is how I came to know this family. Today Muriel told me :Cliff, you have mommy's "heart"..take care of her."

I promise I will Muriel...Rest in Peace Shirley Nanlal. Til the day comes when you awake from your "sleep". We will meet again.

This is "Betsy" Shirley's car....
