http://www.goal.com/en/news/1716/champi ... ns-league-

Having won the so-called 'Group of Death' with a match to spare, Bayern can take plenty of confidence into the knock-out rounds. They humbled the likes of Manchester City, Napoli and Villarreal, and have accordingly been spoken of in the same breath as Barcelona and Real Madrid. Before Bastian Schweinsteiger's clavicular fracture in November, Bayern had Europe's best defensive record. With he and Arjen Robben - who played just 76 minutes in the group stage - returning, they have a couple aces up their sleeves.

Basel have been the surprise package of this edition of the Champions League as they reached the last-16 stage for only the second time in their history. And they did so under caretaker boss Heiko Vogel, who has since been handed a permanent deal. The Swiss club operate on a tight budget, with their squad mainly composed of local players, but under the stewardship of veteran striker Alexander Frei, who has five goals in the competition, they do pose a threat. Ask Manchester United.

Arjen Robben's last-gasp goal earned Bayern Munich a 2-1 win over Bochum to send them into the quarter-finals of the German Cup.

Bochum threatened an upset when Giovanni Federico gave them the lead midway through the first half.

Bayern drew level on 52 minutes when Toni Kroos fired home after a neat one-two with Mario Gomez.
The game looked to be heading to extra-time until Robben popped up with the winner in the closing seconds.

http://www.bayernforum.com/blog/are-bay ... rterfinals

Are Bayern Munich already in the Champions League Quarterfinals?
In our previous article, we wrote about the troubles that FC Sion have with FIFA, and how that may lead to FC Bayern’s opponents FC Basel being eliminated from the Champions League, and we mentioned two possible outcomes, either Bayern Munich getting a walkover or else Manchester United replacing Basel. Now, it has just started to get more interesting for Bayern Munich fans, and we bring you not one but two reasons for this.

Reason 1 – Ukraine

Last year, Ukraine faced a similar problem. Fortunately for the good of the beautiful game, no one was punished because an agreement was reached. However, most importantly, at the time UEFA had threatened that it would eliminate Ukranian clubs WITHOUT calling up replacements, i.e. handing their opponents wins without a match actually taking place.

Therefore, if an agreement is not reached this time round with the Swiss Football Association, UEFA would not be fair to call Manchester United to replace Basel, but would probably have their hands tied and be forced to give FC Bayern free passage to the Champions League quarterfinals.

Of course, I wouldn’t put all my money on this happening, because I am convinced that UEFA would do everything in their powers to try and reinstate Manchester United, knowing that they would end up making much more money this way.

Reason 2 – CAS

The Court of Arbitration for Sport may ring a bell to FC Bayern fans. Indeed, it was the CAS who refused to consider Bayern Munich’s appeal for Franck Ribery’s extremely harsh three match suspension to be reduced, costing the player to miss the Champions League final against Inter Milan. Perhaps by coincedence, the president of CAS is an Italian hailing from Milan, raising more than a few eyebrows amongst the Bayern faithful.

Swiss FA's Gilleron (right) is under stress
Ironically, it is now the CAS that may come to Bayern’s rescue. The Swiss FA president Peter Gilleron was quoted as saying that “the decision, to punish Sion with forfeits, could also be a case of the Court of Arbitration for Sport.” It is now expected that Basel will launch a last-minute appeal with CAS. If such an appeal is done, this will take the CAS some time to process, and by the time a decision is taken, Basel would have played at least their first leg against Bayern, and Switzerland would have probably played their high profile friendly against Argentina on 29th February (yes, 2012 is a leap year).

Turning Point: Rafael fouls Ribery and gets sent off
If Switzerland do not want to comply with FIFA’s demands, which they don’t seem to for the time being, it would be in their interest to go down the CAS route to buy time for Basel and the national team. What this comes down to is that if FC Basel would eliminate FC Bayern and the Court of Arbitration for Sport rule against the Swiss FA, it wouldn’t be the Red Devils making a comeback in the Champions League after being eliminated, but it would be the “typical Germans” instead. Yes, just as Celtic ended up playing in the UEFA Europa League after being eliminated by Sion, similarly it could be FC Bayern playing in the quarterfinals after being eliminated by Basel, not that I wish for the latter to happen.

It is looking indeed very likely that we will see FC Bayern München written on a slip of paper and contained in one the balls used during UEFA’s Champions League quarterfinal draws in Nyon on 16th March 2012. Now, where’s that money I wrote about earlier? I have a bet to make…

Bayern Munich's Mario Gomez keen to sign contract extension
The Germany forward has been in fine form for the Bavarians this season, and, with his deal to set to expire in 2013, is hoping to commit his long-term future to the club

Mario Gomez has revealed that he is content at Bayern Munich and would like to sign a new contract with the Bundesliga leaders.

The Germany international’s current deal with the Bavarian outfit does not expire until the end of next season.

However, Gomez admitted during Bayern’s training camp in Qatar that he is already thinking about a contract extension, declaring: “I feel very, very happy here.”

The 26-year-old forward added that he feels like a key part of the Bayern line-up and that a move abroad is, according to transfermarkt.de, “no longer a priority”.

Gomez, who has been capped 50 times by his country, arrived at the Allianz Arena from Stuttgart in 2009 and has now struck 54 goals in 77 appearances for Bayern.

Jupp Heynckes Hails Bayern Munich Youngster Emre Can
The 66-year-old was full of praise for the Germany Under-17 captain, and insists that his desire to learn and improve will get him far

Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes has lauded promising young midfielder Emre Can, underlining his potential and professional attitude.

Speaking to Abendzeitung Munchen in Doha, where the Bavarians are currently on a training camp, the Borussia Monchengladbach legend has revealed his admiration for the 17-year-old and claims that the starlet has a bright future ahead of him.

"He's very talented, but he still has much to learn. Between what he is accustomed to and what we do here, they are different worlds," commented Heynckes.

"[Can has] great potential. If he is willing to learn, then he can make his way. As a young player today, you have to be obsessed with football."

Can currently plays for Bayern Munich's reserve side in Regionalliga Sud, and has made 13 appearances in the fourth tier of German football.

In addition, he captained Germany at the Under-17 World Cup and Under-17 European Championship in 2011.

Friendly romp
Bayern hit thirteen as Schweinsteiger returns
05.01.2012

The goals rained in and Bastian Schweinsteiger returned to action as Bayern made a winning start to 2012 in a 13-0 friendly win over Qatari second tier outfit SC Al-Sailiya at the Doha training camp on Thursday. Arjen Robben, Mario Gomez and Thomas Müller netted before half-time, before Ivica Olic hit five, Nils Petersen and Franck Ribéry claimed a brace apiece, and Diego Contento scored another in a one-sided second period.

The side sent out by Jupp Heynckes to start the warm-up match bore a strong whiff of the potential line-up for the Bundesliga restart fixture away to Borussia Mönchengladbach on 20 January. Manuel Neuer kept goal behind a back four of Jérôme Boateng, Daniel van Buyten, Holger Badstuber and Philipp Lahm. In central midfield, Anatoliy Tymoshchuk partnered Schweinsteiger, taking part in a competitive match for the first time since breaking a collarbone two months ago. Robben, Müller, Toni Kroos and Gomez took up the attacking positions. Heynckes swapped all eleven of his players at half-time, with Ribéry arguably the biggest name in the second-half line-up.

'Real Madrid & Barcelona are stronger than the rest but I believe Bayern Munich can win the Champions League,' Mario Gomez declares
The talismanic Germany hitman speaks on a plethora of topics in an exclusive interview ahead of the Bundesliga outfit’s tour to India during the winter break

EXCLUSIVE |
Mario Gomez is in the form of his life, having scored 50 goals in 2011 for club and country, a feat which makes him arguably the most feared striker in world football today. He averages a goal per match in this season’s Champions League, seven in seven, and the same in the Bundesliga with 16 as many appearances. His 14 career hat-tricks only go on to highlight his hunger for goals.

In an exclusive interview, ‘Super Mario’ discusses the secret to his success, the special connection with a Brazilian striker and his dream of winning the Champions League.

Ten Action: The 2012 Champions League final will be played in Munich. Is it only a distant dream or a realistic goal for Bayern this season to reach the final?

MG: Both. It is the dream of us, all footballers, to win the Champions League at some point in your career and Bayern does offer us that possibility. We are one of the best five-to-seven teams on the planet and we have to get demonstrate that. However, you cannot plan to win the Champions League. You have to overcome so many obstacles, all the good teams in the competition and the aforementioned five or six teams that can realistically win it.

Dreaming | A home Champions League final beckons

Your form on the day is really important in the Champions League and you need a little bit of luck too. The Champions League is a knockout competition and if you play one bad match on a bad day, you are normally out. If we can prevent that from occurring, we have the quality to reach the final. But, as I said, there are five or six other teams that want to win this competition.

And I do believe Real Madrid and Barcelona are probably a little stronger than the rest. However two years ago, we made it into the final and nobody had expected that. That tells me that it’s always possible.

You are part of an attack comprising Franck Ribery, Arjen Robben, Thomas Muller, Toni Kroos and Bastian Schweinsteiger. What is the chemistry like on and off the field? How much of it comes naturally and how much of it is hard work?

MG: These are all top players and a real top player wants to win every single match and is always focused on success and hungry for more. Our team is like that. You only mentioned the offensive players but the same applies to the defenders, of course. The entire team is hungry for success. We are a very young team that has already collected much experience despite its youth and will remain hungry for more success.

Hungry | Bayern's youthful desire is key

I believe we have a lot of power and quality in our team but even the best players have to show that every day. Talent alone isn’t enough; there is much more to it. I think the character of our players is important because not only we are good football players but we have the right attitude. The coach has shaped the team to his liking and I think we are playing a good season.

Former Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld recently said that you were as important to the club as Lionel Messi is to Barcelona, and Willy Sagnol described you as the only Bayern player who can't be replaced. Any comments on this?

MG: On one hand, it tells me that I am on the right track forward and that I am in good shape and form at the moment. On the other hand, I know very well how quickly things can change from positive to negative or vice versa in football. That’s why I will always try to play to my best ability and to remain fit and healthy because that is most important. If I keep performing well, I will continue scoring goals and remain important for the team.

Strikers are measured by the number of goals that they score. But for you, is it more important to score goals or be successful with the team?

MG: It’s true that strikers are measured by the amount of goals they score and the only way to defend your spot in a top team is to play well and score goals. Nonetheless, the team’s success is always the most important thing. If you play in a team which has harmony and which functions well as a team and play successfully, the striker will receive far more opportunities to score and that’s when scoring comes automatically.

Who were your role models as footballers when you were young?

MG: I don’t have any role models anymore. The only idol I ever really had was when I was between the ages of eight and 12 and that’s Romario. On one hand, he was a striker like me and scored many goals, and thus represented what I wanted to become. On the other hand, it’s special as a child I think that a player has a very similar name to yours. So I always saw a special connection between me and Romario which is why he was my childhood hero.

This is how I do it | "I have my own personality and I don’t try to copy anybody"
Now I don’t have any idols any more but I do enjoy watching the international top strikers and watching them score their goals. However I don’t try to emulate what they do since I have my own style now and authority. I have my own personality and I don’t try to copy anybody.

You have been in excellent form in the current Bundesliga season - 16 goals in 17 matches. Fans in India are interested to know whether you have any special rituals before the matches?

MG: I think everybody does, it is part of the routine more than it is a ritual. It’s all subconscious in my opinion. I, for instance, always put my left boot on before the right. I also always go to the toilet on the far left but it’s not as if I plan to go there specifically. It’s pretty automatic. I always conduct the same stretching exercise before the match but I think every football player does these things.

Best foot forward | Left boot on first for Gomez

Coming, of course, to your personal background. Through your father, you have Spanish genes. Is the German-Spanish combination something which made you deadly as an international footballer? How Spanish would you describe yourself as a footballer and as a human being?

MG: Currently the mixture seems to be quite good consider how well Spanish football is doing and how Germany is catching up right now. I believe these two teams will dominate football for the next few years. So to be a mixture of the two cannot be that bad! But I do believe that I am a German football player than anything else. I also know my life here playing for German clubs, German youth national teams. So I do believe I am a German football player, so to speak.

In my private life, obviously I love my family and my Spanish relatives too. When you have southern European relatives, you understand how heartfelt and emotional and loving they are. So I always look forward to seeing them and I love spending time with my family in Spain. I do consider myself in my private life to be half-German and half-Spanish.

The draws for the groups at Euro 2012 are out. Germany are in the toughest group along with Netherlands, Denmark and Portugal. What's your take on it?

MG: Not only the world of football and fans are looking forward to it, but so are the players. It is definitely the strongest group at the Euros with a great deal of quality. Three teams are very strong and then Denmark have absolutely nothing to lose and are therefore totally unpredictable. That is why it is a very difficult group.

Group of death | Draw makes Euro 2012 "interesting"

But I find that far more interesting than playing in a group with loads of underdogs where the fans are only discussing us how high your team will win. That wouldn’t be as exciting as the task that lies ahead of us now. We all know everything is at stake from the very start. We all know we have to show 100 per cent. You cannot take it slow against any of these opponents. But you have to go full speed ahead from the start of the tournament. That will certainly be difficult but it can also turn out to be a great advantage.

There are many aspiring young footballers in India who want to become a top striker like you. What would you advise them to do?

MG: I don’t think there is one secret to success. When I was young, I had many role models and, in particular, Romario, who I admired. I think the most important thing for a young player is to simply enjoy what he is doing. You need to enjoy being on the pitch and playing football because you can’t perform well if you are not having fun. It’s the same for professionals as it is for amateurs. But it is even more important for youth teams. I think every player is better when he is enjoying himself. So I think that is most important for a young player.

Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund continue to trade blows at the top of the Bundesliga table after the title rivals both recorded home wins.

Hamburg picked up a much-needed three points in their fight to pull clear of trouble, while Augsburg and Werder Bremen were both held at home.

Leaders Bayern were forced to work hard to overcome Wolfsburg before running out 2-0 winners at the Allianz Arena.

The prolific Mario Gomez finally broke the deadlock on the hour mark and Dutch winger Arjen Robben scored a second in the last minute.

Bayern's Schweinsteiger doubtful for Basel trip
Published: Thursday 9 February 2012, 11.54CET
Bastian Schweinsteiger's involvement in FC Bayern München's round of 16 visit to FC Basel 1893 is in serious doubt after the Germany midfielder sustained ankle ligament damage.

Bayern's Bastian Schweinsteiger receives treatment after injuring his ankle against Stuttgart

FC Bayern München are expected to be without Bastian Schweinsteiger for several weeks after the German international tore the lateral collateral ligament in his right ankle during Wednesday's German Cup victory at VfB Stuttgart.

Schweinsteiger limped off 17 minutes into the 2-0 success and after a subsequent examination of the injury the 27-year-old will need to wear a cast for a week. While his full recovery time remains unclear, the midfielder's involvement in Bayern's UEFA Champions League round of 16 first-leg trip to FC Basel 1893 on 22 February is now in serious doubt.

"Regarding Bastian's return, we will communicate a prediction at a later time," said Bayern team doctor Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahr.

The dynamic Schweinsteiger, who was sidelined for the last two months of 2011 after breaking his collarbone during the 3-2 group stage win at SSC Napoli on matchday four, is one of Bayern's most influential players and has made 14 Bundesliga appearances this season. Bayern host Basel in the return leg on 13 March.
