MG Man wrote:Really curious as to what they gonna do with Beorn...
yup! hope they don't leave him out entirely like they did with Tom Bombadil in LOTR.

They really extended and added in stuff about Radagast who was barely mentioned in the Hobbit book. Jackson also completely left out Tom Bombadil from the LOTR, perhaps he may make an appearance in The Hobbit?

IIRC Radagast was the one who sent the Eagle to rescue Gandalf from Orthanc when Saruman captured him. Instead Jackson left out Radagast from the movie and replaced him with a moth that Gandalf spoke to.

BTW here are the lyrics to the Misty Mountains song (far longer than the version in the movie).

Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away ere break of day
To seek the pale enchanted gold.
The dwarves of yore made mightly spells,
While hammers fell like ringing bells
In places deep, where dark things sleep,
In hollow halls beneath the fells.

For ancient king and elvish lord
There many a gleaming golden hoard
They shaped and wrought, and light they caught
To hide in gems on hilt of sward.
On silver necklaces they strung
The flowering stars, on crowns they hung
The dragon-fire, in twisted wire
They meshed the light of moon and sun.
Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeouns deep and caverns old
We must away, ere break of day,
To claim our long-forgotten gold.

Goblets they carved there for themselves
And harps of gold; where no man delves
There lay they long, and many a song
Was sung unheard by men or elves.
The pines were roaring on the height,
(The pines were roaring on the height)
The winds were moaning in the night,
The fire was red, it flaming spread;
(The fire was red, it flaming spread)
The trees like torches blazed with light.
The bells were ringing in the dale
(The bells were ringing in the dale)
And men looked up with faces pale;
The dragon's ire more fierce than fire
(The dragon's ire more fierce than fire)
Laid low their towers and houses frail.

The mountain smoked beneath the moon;
(The mountain smoked beneath the moon)
The dwarves, they heard the tramp of doom.
They fled their hall to dying fall
(They fled their hall to dying fall)
Beneath his feet, beneath the moon.

Far over the misty mountains grim
To dungeons deep and caverns dim
We must away, ere break of day,
To win our harps and gold from him!

The pines were roaring on the height,
(The pines were roaring on the height)
The winds were moaning in the night,
The fire was red, it flaming spread;
(The fire was red, it flaming spread)
The trees like torches blazed with light.
The bells were ringing in the dale
(The bells were ringing in the dale)
And men looked up with faces pale;
The dragon's ire more fierce than fire
(The dragon's ire more fierce than fire)
Laid low their towers and houses frail.

As far as I can tell, Beorn is supposed to be included, since he is listed in the cast, being played by Mikael Persbrandt. Unless they decide to cut him in the editing room...

the book didnt have any parts with him changing - they saw him as a man and a then as a bear - but he changed elsewhere

Weta mentioned though that they were working on extensive CG for Beorn - perhaps it will be for his transformation

I don't think it matters if you actually read "The Hobbit." Fans will still be in for a surprise because the story was extended and changed slightly into 3 movies by using the contents of the appendices from the LOTR novels.

Never read the hobbit books, i have watched the cartoons from the 70's though.
However i am an avid LOTR maniac and after seeing the hobbit all i can say is that i must see it again in the big screen. I absolutely love that movie. Didnt find it was too slow. It was much ,much better than i was expecting. I can't understand the bad reviews it got. I was a thoroughly enjoyable movie and in some ways i think was better than LOTR movie wise.
The CGI was great also.
I didnt get the part with the fighting mountains although i liked it, anyone care to explain that part or will it be answered in the other movies?

Another thing, some fellars in here making it seem as though they were singing some kind of gay alice in wonderland type song....it was a friking manly as f*ck tune. All great warriors sing songs so man the f*ck up.

Halfbreed07 wrote:i thought the sequence at the beginning when we were first being introduced to the dwarfs was a tad bit stretched. Similarly the first interaction with gollum. It feels like it could have been two movies at best. Having watched LOTR multiple times i appreciate the nostalgia factor as well as the 5 sec satisfaction of seeing the return of some characters. However it was hard to sit and watch multiple musical sequences and childish banter. Does not seem to fit in with the previous franchise very well. Of course i did not read the books so i may not be totally correct in my assertions.

THIS

Went in with no expectation of LOTR and fell asleep IN THE CINEMA from the scene where the Dwarves showed up to when Baggins caught up with them to start. Everything else thereafter was good...with a lil' bit of great sprinkled here and there.

^ well that is 1/6th of the section of the book that the movie was based on - so I can't see how it was drawn out!

The sequence with the dwarves being introduced takes up 4 pages of the book - and that is just them ringing his doorbell and introducing themselves one by one or two by two at the door and each saying "at your service".

The entire story from Gandalf meeting Bilbo and the dwarves eating and singing in the Hobbit hole up to where Bilbo eventually meets up with them after deciding he will go with them takes up an entire chapter PLUS about 5 pages of the following chapter of the book. Those were key points in the telling of the story - so it was expected to be lengthy.

The first movie in the Hobbit trilogy takes up 6 chapters of the book.

I'm not disputing the length of the book however I went to the cinema to see a MOVIE.

To a lover of the book I may appear impatient but when you take into consideration one had to sit and watch a door bell repeatedly rung (I think I barely stayed awake through this) and then the other stuff that took place (refraining from details here in an attempt not to spoil the show) it was quite a chore.

Perhaps an advisory should be put in the preview "READ THE BOOK".

^ as I said before I DO NOT think you should need to read a book to appreciate a movie.

But I drew reference to it to show how much of the book was taken up in that sequence of events. It IS a big part of the story that the dwarves came up one by one and two by two multiple times to ring his doorbell and it is supposed to show that it happened so often that it aggravated Bilbo - that's just the story being told - book or no book.

if any advisory needs to be put out is that "this is not a shoot-em-up action flick" and "please take a nap before going to cinema" :lol:

I don't know if it was mentioned before but has anyone seen the books being offered locally or would one have to resort to the usual amazon?

The way you all ringing on about the books has me curious.

that introduction scene was quite enjoyable. i was not expecting this to be the standard shoot up movie, like expendables( my padnas watch me weird when i say that i did not like expendables but understood why they would). it was supposed to be light hearted, and happy go lucky in a way, but i find it to get a little more serious than that. because even though it was through the perspective of bilbo, it was more about the reason for the quest, which was the dwarves' reason.

i do agree that some things are a little drawn out, but for the effect of the movie or to suit the story it was telling, it needed to be that way. that is how that story is. so they even modified the introduction scene to make it more movie suited, even though it supposed to be longer.
it paints the picture of the dwarves, they are quite spirited and lively but tough and skilled, and inventive or creative. they are also intense as well as serious.

i don't think that this is your average movie like avengers(which i don't like very much), and not every body will like it. but it is good, and if u don't like it, well u just don't.
