between

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdet ... er=297-408

AND

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdet ... er=275-025

which one better in terms of quality, these prices are the lowest I'm willing to go
loving the HiVi but I like the flush mounting Dayton... any other opinions?

another reason I like the HiVi is the rear, it shaped so that sound can just flow around it, I may put it infront a woofer, bad idea?

I did my fair share of research on those Samsung LEDs and I'd say if you want 3d at most affordable price, go with the D6400 series but it will set you back a few thousand TTD more than the D6000 series which is everything from the 6400 in terms of spec minus the 3d tuner.

I choose the Samsung line because they were the best at reproducing colours against namely Sony and Sharp. You do get some backlight bleeding in black scenes but it's minimal, and only occurs in the darkest of shots.
This coupled with a nice matte screen reduces reflections from other light sources (lights, windows etc.)

I also wanted the thinnest LED and again Samsung was the top choice when I was working with my budget.

cool thanks for the infor

that is a tube TV, meaning the resolution is very low, like around 640x480 which is terrible for computer use

it will look like you are using safe mode all the time

at 640x480 your start menu in XP is going to take up half the screen lol

I'm still in the 30 day trial for Netflix, not sure if to take the lower quality of netflix for all-you-can-watch for a monthly fee, or the no subscription, full HD and 5.1 of Vudu and pay as you watch. I might just keep both!

So finally as of the long weekend just gone, I'm brand new to this home theater thing :D (about 2 years too late I know  ) with the purchase of a large HDTV and hmph - 65 pages was a hell of a lot to go through :? Anyway, hopefully some of you can answer my n00B questions and offer me some advice.

I'm not an audiophile like some of you here, so sound quality and acoustics are not at the top of my list. But picture quality is. So I saw the quote below:
Duane 3NE 2NR wrote:
Humes wrote:N00b question: One of those receivers will make your digital cable look better on a HDTV?
if you get a receiver with a good HD upscaler such as an Anchor Bay or Faroujda processor it will make a big difference, especially on larger HDTVs (over 45")

My first question is would something like this really bring up my basic Flow cable signal to that of HD quality? If so, is it only with a receiver (such as this http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-VSX-920-K ... nk-c605-20) that I can get the capability to upscale my analog/digital cable signal, or is there just a box alone (which should be much cheaper) that can do this? I'm not too keen on paying flow for their HD package, as it seems to only be a limited number of channels, and I've heard the quality isn't all that so it doesn't seem worth it to me.

Secondly, although ultimate sound quality is not my goal, I don't mind paying for something that would make the audio from my system sound a bit better. One of those HTIAB systems on the 1st page seems more than enough for me audio-wise, but I'm more concerned with the image quality and if any of those budget systems offer HD upscaling for video. Even saw this pretty much dirt cheap receiver on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-VSX-520-K ... 378&sr=1-2) and it says "1080p video conversion and upscaling ensures the highest quality video from any source", so it seems to have the HD upscaler Duane mentioned above. Or does it?

Thanks for any advice!!!

^ the Pioneer receivers use Anchor Bay upscalers and they are great!
I have a Pioneer Elite VSX-23TXH and the upscaler works great for me.
just make sure t get a good set of composite a/v cables to connect your flow cable box.

remember though the upscaler cannot do magic.
Garbage in, garbage out.
If the source is crappy theyn the upscaler will only have crap to upscale.
NatGeo, CNN, BBC World, BBC America, Cooking, Speed, MAVTV and other channels that have good quality to start with can look like full 720p HD

your Pioneer receiver will upscale to 1080p, but it may only look as good as DVD quality or 720p.

I say get a good receiver now with an upscaler and done - forget about trying to get a stand alone box to do it. The receiver is the heart of your HT system anyway so go out and get a good one - you can upgrade your speakers later on. Much later on when you get really good speakers you can keep them for the next 20 years and just keep upgrading your receiver as new formats and technology comes out.

I care more about video than audio too I guess - though I want audio that will match the video.
I went with plasma because of pure image quality. LED and LCD still can't compete with the picture wuality of plasma, even in 2011 - though plasma is not for everyone. Plasma has better blacks, truer colour, 600Hz, perfect backlighting than LED. But plasmas are heavy, use alot of power, generate alot of heat and all glass screen means more glare than LCD in bright rooms.

Look at Samsung and Panasonic when buying a TV - they are top of the line today.
Do not look at Samsung and Panasonic when buying a receiver or HTIAB though! lol

Thanks Duane - that makes sense since you put it like that - will start looking around at decently priced receivers with an upscaler.

And yes, I did get a Samsung LCD tv :) - after reading all the reviews both here and on Amazon/CNET, I wasn't going with anything else. Even though different brands came my way previously with the features/size I was looking for at pretty decent prices, I waited until I found a Samsung with the size/features I wanted at the right price. I've only had it a couple days now, but for the price I'm pretty happy with the quality so far

I also read elsewhere about avoiding Samsung for HTIAB and even some of their blu-ray players - thanks. If I have to go with a receiver alone, I think I'll stick with Pioneer or Onkyo - those seem to be among the best priced quality brands.

But are there any decently priced HTIAB with that HD upscaling feature? I don't need it to have Dolby 7.1, or even 5.1. Dolby 2.1 is more than enough for me

edit: In fact, it can't be anything more than 2 speakers (it's for the bedroom, and neither my wife nor I won't want the clutter of 5 or 7 speakers), but I can get away with the subwoofer since we both like the deep bass when watching movies, so 2.1 it is.

the a/c may only be necessary if you wall mount your plasma right up against the wall with no space for it to vent. I have a slim plasma (1.3" thick) and I wanted it mounted with a low profile mount, so it looks like a picture on the wall - but that came at the disadvantage of alot of heat.

Thing is, I can't sit in that room and watch a movie without the a/c on anyway- so it's not an issue for me.

you would need Raptor to bring the VSX-920 K if you want an upscaler in that range

Doesn't look like that one has it either. Seems the lowest priced Pioneer with that upscaler feature is the one Duane suggested http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0039X ... QLAKJ574UN. Oh, and check your PM Raptor.
