Sandy Makes Landfall Over Cuba
Early in the morning on Oct. 25, 2012, the Suomi NPP satellite passed over Hurricane Sandy after it made landfall over Cuba and Jamaica, capturing this highly detailed infrared imagery, showing areas of deep convection around the central eye. Besides the highly detailed infrared imagery, the satellite shows visible-like imagery of the cloud tops, along with the city lights of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

Sandy has sadly become a 'monster' which has begun an episode of destruction along the US eastern sea-board which spells major dis-location on all fronts.
The impact is even being felt locally in the business community which at this time of the year has a need to interface with financial, insurance and other associations and all this in the high point of presidential election.
Just had a feeling all along that this hurricane season had something special up its sleeve.
Hope things fizzle-out!

Fake photo

http://urbanlegends.about.com/od/natura ... icture.htm
It was created by combining a fairly standard image of New York Harbor with a 2004 photo of a supercell thunderstorm taken by professional storm chaser Mike Hollingshead (viewable in its original context here).

Nor is this the first time Hollingshead's work has been appropriate for use in an online hoax. The same supercell image went around in May 2005 labeled "Storm Near Bunbury, Australia," and again a few months later attached to an email entitled "Pictures of Hurricane Katrina."

Another viral image purporting to show a tornado forming near the Statue of Liberty proved to be authentic, albeit 34 years old.

2012 update: The tornado image circulated again in Oct. 2012, falsely identified as a photo of Hurricane Sandy ("Frankenstorm").

^ nevertheless things like that do occur called Supercells. I've seen this in North America with my own eyes, and it is very scary looking up at one of these monsters, having never seen something like that before. It looked like that scene from Independence Day when the ships were now breaking the clouds.

Sandy eventually made landfall and 8 pm high tide is creating flood events people were worried about.
The storm will be around for at least one more high tide.
Just brings back memories of Katrina.
In the mix are residents who felt they could ride this out,now the 'cats among the pigeons' and I am sure in the dark, many are into full pray mode in the impacted areas.
Veterans of hurricanes understand the torment.

Disaster estimation firm Eqecat is forecasting Sandy to cost between $10 billion and $20 billion USD in economic losses. The NYSE is closed for a 2nd day. 12,000 flights cancelled along with all transport systems in the region. Add to that the cost of physical damages and deaths.

By comparison Katrina cost $108 billion USD in 2005 dollars, which has so far been the costliest in history.

What has now become obvious is that what was televised during the weather event didn't show the hidden and disabling destruction being undertaken by Sandy.
Similar to Katrina we now are witness to the power of water and in particular salt water working its way into all the infrastructure and even backing up against normal waste systems.
In comparison to a Haiti circumstance the impact here is as severe except the implications have to be understood as mother nature stripping away of man-made conviences necessary to create a artificial habitat and throwing a society into a world they not prepared for.
The projections of recovery in 10 days etc. sounds like New Orleans right after Katrina and as we all know this was far from what was achieveable.
Without close to optimum power supplies and other services such as transport, sewerage etc. things are going to get very bad soon before they get better.
What is important for the average citizen caught in this disaster to understand is that now is a time to focus or going back to basic living behaviours and moving on things one step at a time (don't try to swallow the elephant).
The road to recovery is going to be tough as hell and there will be a tendency by many in the next 3 weeks to get fustrated and start to look for individuals and institutions to blame.
This is a nightmare secanario unique to the developed world and the costs and time estimates are going to be way above the numbers we are hearing at this stage of the game.
....Hang in there USA this too shall pass!
