My mother was an alcoholic.

I lived with her until I was 13.

After that, she sent my 3 younger siblings and me to live at a children’s home in Sangre Grande called Bridges of Hope.

I lived there till I was 21.

She could not look after us because she was often drunk- she did not ever hurt us but she was verbally abusive.

When she was sober she was so pretty with her long black hair and pretty face- she would hug us, tell us to do our school- work, make sugar cakes and tell jokes, I didn’t understand then but I realise now that she loved us enough to want more for us than she could give – and she wanted us to be safe.

She went into rehab. but didn’t stay for long.

I’m pretty sensible- I want to be a role model for my siblings.

I don’t drink even when I go out.

I’m doing my degree in Mathematics, working and supporting myself.

Even in those early days at home when we lived without electricity, I always did my Maths homework first using a lamp.

People say that if you grow up in a children’s home or in an alcoholic household you won’t amount to much- I know that’s not true.

I have big plans for my siblings and me.

My mother died last year after a night of drinking.

She fell against a mirror. She was alone.

On the Main Road to Port of Spain ~ The Roti Shop of the Day ~ Became the Highway Inn

The Nandalal family are still selling good tasty Roti in central Trinidad.

Their original location (1950's and 60's) was just at the end of the MacBean Highway - North of Preysal village on the Southern Main Road.

They then had a Potato Roti for 6 Cents - Chicken was 12 Cents - an Large Mauby

They even briefly opened a Hot-O-Hot outlet in Boissierre Village, Maraval a few years ago (early 1990's).

They also made a zesty Hot-O-Hot pepper sauce, which Hilo Westmoorings carried at one stage

Local Ocelot ~ Born in Captivity


The mother named ‘Noelle’ gave birth on Saturday (18-4-15) at her den.

She had been a resident of the centre having been born and raised in captivity.

Noelle - cannot thrive in the wild since she had lived all her life in the centre and is part of the centre’s captive breeding programme.

It is hoped that her baby, will be healthy enough to be released into the wild.
