While vaccines would help in light of the mutating nature is it the long term solution or would we need something like a flu shot every year.

In a case like that we really need to learn to live with it.

By 2022 we mightn't even know what an economy is.
The issue with school is whether or not the kids are connected? How many are? Do they even have devices?
This puts kids without at such a dis-advantage.

Hospitalizations and deaths of younger people soar due to COVID-19, PAHO Director reports

Countries will need to maintain or increase ICU bed capacity even further if infections continue to rise at current rates. In the past week, nearly 40% of all global COVID-19 deaths took place in the Americas.

Washington, D.C. May 5, 2021 (PAHO) – Hospitalizations and deaths of younger people are surging as the COVID-19 pandemic accelerates across the Americas, said Carissa F. Etienne, Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).

“Adults of all ages – including young people – are becoming seriously ill. Many of them are dying,” Dr. Etienne said during her weekly media briefing.

“In Brazil, mortality rates have doubled among those younger than 39, quadrupled among those in their 40s and tripled for those in their 50s between December 2020 and March 2021,” she continued. “This is tragic, and the consequences are dire for our families, our societies and our future.”

She said that hospitalization rates of people under 39 rose by more than 70 percent in Chile during the past few months. In Brazil hospitalizations have been highest among people in their 40s. “In some areas of the U.S., more people in their 20s are now being hospitalized for COVID-19 than people in their 70s,” Dr. Etienne said.

“For much of the pandemic, our hospitals were filled with elderly COVID patients, many of whom had pre-existing conditions that made them more susceptible to severe disease,” Dr. Etienne noted. “But look around intensive care units across our region today. You’ll see they’re filled not only with elderly patients, but also with younger people.”

Since healthy young people are more likely to survive, they may remain in hospitals for weeks, she said. As a result, countries must be prepared for surging hospital demand.

“If infections continue to rise at this rate, we expect that over the next three months, countries across our region will need to maintain and even increase their ICU bed capacity further,” she warned.

UW study: True global COVID death toll is more than double the official toll

SEATTLE - The COVID-19 pandemic has killed more than twice as many people around the world as the official death counts show, according to a new analysis by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington.

The official global death toll as of Thursday stands at about 3.26 million, but the new analysis found that COVID-19 has actually caused about 6.9 million deaths worldwide.

“As terrible as the COVID-19 pandemic appears, this analysis shows that the actual toll is significantly worse,” said Dr. Chris Murray, director of the UW institute. “Understanding the true number of COVID-19 deaths not only helps us appreciate the magnitude of this global crisis, but also provides valuable information to policymakers developing response and recovery plans.”

The updated analysis shows that the United States has had more COVID-19 deaths to-date than any other country, a total of more than 905,000.

By region, Latin America and the Caribbean and Central Europe, Eastern Europe and Central Asia were hardest hit in terms of total deaths. This figure only includes deaths caused directly by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, not deaths caused by the pandemic’s disruption to health care systems and communities, Murray said.

The official death toll undercounts the true toll mostly because many deaths from COVID-19 go unreported. Countries only report deaths that occur in hospitals or in patients with a confirmed infection. In many places, weak health reporting systems and low access to health care magnify this challenge.

According to the new analysis, the countries with the highest COVID death tolls are the United States, with an estimated 905,289 fatalities; India, with 654,395; Mexico, with 617,127; Brazil, with 595,903; and the Russian Federation, with 593,610.

However, the official death tolls in those countries are significantly lower. In the U.S., the official toll is 574,043; in India, 221,181; in Mexico, 217,694; in Brazil, 408,680; and in the Russian Federation, 109,334.

remember the longer they take to vaccinate the population the more the virus will mutate making the vaccine ineffective. only rapid vaccination will prevent further mutation. if there is no host the virus will die. what the world need is to pass the no patent proposal that biden wants and allow vaccines to be made cheap in india, canada, russia and vaccinate the world quickly. it took almost 15 months to get the vaccine so once the virus mutates again that is another 12 months to adjust the vaccine. russian, american or chinese vaccine makes no sense taking righ now unless there is enough to vaccinate 1.4 million persons so there is no mutation within TT otherwise you take the vaccine today and the virus mutates and you catch the new strain cause there is no vaccine, just like the common flu.

they reduce chances of infection, and also even if infected, the chances of transmission,. we just need to fast track almost everyone getting it. once we build heard immunity those who are infected will have a hard time infecting others so the R0 will be drastically cut and it will die down.

the less new infections we get the less chance of it mutating. all the variants of concern came about in populations where millions of infections were occurring

we may still need a booster that better protects against the variants especially the south african one but the current one should still be taken to both protect u from severe illness and reduce the spread
