In the 1970s, the motion picture Earthquake premiered with a dramatic new innovation in cinema sound – Sensurround™. For the first time, audio special effects became an integral part of the movie experience. The concept required large powerful subwoofer cabinets to produce very low frequencies, in order to “shake” the movie-theater and simulate an earthquake. Cerwin-Vega developed new transducers and the “Double E” bass horns for the job. Using dual 18” woofers in a folded horn configuration, the internal path length of each bass horn was 6 ft. with a cutoff frequency of 33 Hz. The system had incredibly high sensitivity at 106 dB (1 Watt @ 1 meter). Sensurround™ technology and Cerwin-Vega were honored with an Academy Award for special technical achievement in 1974.
