Penthouse to Debut 3D TV Porn in Europe on Tuesday
FriendFinder Networks' Penthouse division said Monday that it plans to launch the first 3D porn channel, Penthouse 3D, on the Astra network in Europe.
The channel will launch on March 1st, 2011 from 11:00 pm until 5:00 am (GMT +1) on ASTRA, whose designation is ASTRA 3B, 23, 5 Degrees East.
"We are very excited about the launch of the Penthouse 3D channel," says Marc Bell, chief executive of FriendFinder Networks. "Our goal is always to deliver the latest technology on the world's best platform."
According to FriendFinder, the network will include "100 percent Full 3D Native HD, 30 hours refreshment monthly and programming that includes soft core and hard core feeds."
In 2009, Penthouse launched three HD Penthouse-branded channels.
Surprisingly, FriendFinder isn't the first porn network to sell 3D porn;in Jan. 2010, a company called Bad Girls in 3D announced said that it would sell a 60-inch Mitsubishi HDTV, two sets of glasses, 3D playback software, and a subscription for $19.95 a month that would provide content featuring said bad girls. Accoridng to the company's Web site, users can order the hardware bundle for $4,000 or $1,800 for a setup that uses the PC instead. The site lists 13 3D films that are apparently available for download and viewing.
"The start of Penthouse 3D represents another milestone in the development of ASTRA as key player in the 3D television market," said Ferdinand Kayser, president and chief executive of SES ASTRA said in a statement. "Furthermore, it confirms ASTRA 23.5 East as Europe's fastest growing hot spot for both Direct-To-Home and Direct-to-Cable distribution."
3D televisions debuted at the 2010 Consumer Electronics show, backed by rival 3D networks from Sony and ESPN. The latter ESPN 3D channel launched in conjunction with the World Cup, but there still has been a relative dearth of 3D programming, even as companies like Panasonic still push 3D TV technology hard.
That has meant that 3D TV likely has a grim future ahead of it, if a January Nielson study is any indication.
Is 3D Porn the Next Big Thing For the Adult Industry?
LAS VEGAS – Is America ready for 3D porn? While most major adult film studios are still in the early stages of pondering their 3D options, one company this week unveiled a 3D subscription-based offering that promises new footage on a weekly basis.
One of the major trends to emerge from this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) here is 3D TV, and given that the adult industry is usually at the forefront of adopting new technologies (think Beta vs. VHS), we stopped by the AVN Entertainment Expo as well to see if 3D porn is on the horizon.
One company that jumped into 3D just this week is Bad Girls in 3D. The company is offering a $4,000 package that includes a 60-inch Mitsubishi WD-60735 HDTV, an enclosure with 1080p support, HDMI cable, two pairs of 3D glasses, batteries, installation guide, and 3D playback software.
A monthly $19.95 subscription fee, meanwhile, will provide access to the company's films. Lance Johnson, a producer with Bad Girls in 3D, said there is currently between 12 to 15 hours of content on the system, but they are shooting new videos on a weekly basis.
When asked if users really want to see their pornography in 3D, Johnson said the technology appears more like you're looking into a window rather than having something fly at your face, if you will. There's "more depth" to the images than there is the sensation that something is jumping off the screen, he said.
A quick demo of the technology at its AVN booth showed a woman who has misplaced her clothing dancing around the screen. Johnson was correct that it did seem more like you were peering inside a peep show window of sorts rather than being visually assaulted by 3D images, though the demo did not include scenes of the more intimate variety.
I stopped by the booths for some of the larger adult production companies to see if they also had any plans for 3D.
A Vivid Entertainment spokeswoman said that it is something they have considered, but there has not been any real movement on it because very few peoples have 3D TVs.
"We've talked about it, but until there's a [popular] player for home use, it doesn't make much sense for us" to pursue it, she said. Plus, 3D glasses are "not very sexy."
Hustler, however, is taking a more active approach to 3D. The company has not yet made a 3D movie, but it's something they are "very focused on," said Rob Smith, director of operations for Hustler.
Smith has only been with the company for about six weeks, but he worked a lot with 3D technology in his previous position, and that's something he hopes to bring to Hustler.
But like Vivid, Hustler is waiting just a bit longer until 3D technology makes its way into the mainstream – either on TVs or other handheld devices, Smith said. He is confident the technology will catch on enough this year to produce Hustler's first 3D movie by the third quarter 2010.
A spokesman for Wicked Pictures did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
