Wayne Rooney banned for 3 matches in Euro 2012

Wayne Rooney will miss the entire group stage of the 2012 European Championship after receiving a three-game ban Thursday for kicking a player during England’s final qualifier.

European soccer’s governing body cited him for his actions against Montenegro defender Miodrag Dzudovic during a qualifying game last Friday.

UEFA’s rule book calls for three-game bans in cases judged to be assault, rather than the mandatory one-match ban for a red card.

Rooney, who did not attend the hearing, can appear in his own defense at an appeal hearing. England’s Football Association said it would study the disciplinary committee’s decision before deciding whether to appeal.

The expected appeal is likely to be heard before England finds out its Euro 2012 opponents on Dec. 2 when the draw is made in Kiev. Ukraine is co-hosting next year’s tournament with Poland.

Rooney and England’s FA wrote letters of mitigation to the 10-man UEFA panel, which also considered the report by German referee Wolfgang Stark.

Stark had praised Rooney for showing no dissent after his dismissal, and England hoped UEFA would see the offense as resulting from frustration rather than malice.

England and Rooney also hoped UEFA would impose the same two-match ban it gave Russia forward Andrei Arshavin ahead of Euro 2008.

Arshavin was sent off for violent conduct in the 84th minute of a decisive qualifier against Andorra in November 2007. Russia won 1-0 to advance ahead of England. Arshavin sat out Russia’s first two matches before leading the team to the semifinals.

Reina: Didn't see much work and I can't fault him on the goal.
Kelly: Fantastic game defensively but our back-line collectively has to work on defending corners.
Skrtel: Such a shame that ball fell to him, terrible miss.
Carra: Perfect derby performance. Fantastic tackles every time.
Enrique: Always a contender for MOTM. Defensively and offensively he was perfection today.
Adam: Fantastic run to win the free kick that lead to the goal and made clever passes all day.
Lucas: Sub was necessary after he picked up the yellow. Made some poor passes in the first half, not his greatest performance.
Hendo: Unbelievable 30 mins. Two fantastic chances to win the game and should gain huge confidence from his performance.
Gerrard: MOTM for sure. All over the pitch, great tackles, great ball movement, and the perfect free kick. Beautiful to see our leader back.
Kuyt: Second half was excellent. Won countless headers to get the ball to Suarez and was always around the box in support.
Downing: Played well off Enrique but wouldn't have minded him being subbed for Bellamy around 75mins.
Suarez: Not much to say, I expect nothing less from one of the best in the world.

Missed out on jumping on them in the first half but the second half was brilliant football and we truly deserved to win the game. Can only blame ourselves for not taking the chances we had and so we deserve the single point. Zero fear of Man United and so we should fear no other team in the league. Countless positives to take from the game for each player and I see us growing as a team over these next three weeks. Expecting 9 points.

Mario Balotelli's remarkable capacity for self-inflicted problems resurfaced on the eve of the Manchester derby when he had to escape from his burning house after a fire caused by letting off fireworks in the bathroom in the early hours ofSaturday morning.
Balotelli escaped unhurt but will be summoned to see Roberto Mancini to explain the latest moment of madness in his chequered career. City have been contacted by the fire service and Mancini will want to know what Balotelli was doing putting himself in such a position before their biggest match of the season.
