the entire WORLD need to BAN any flights, boats, imports, exports going and coming from there. Just cut them off completely for a few years, that should give the virus enough time to die out!

Over last 36 hours the news generally indicate a more robust series of international interventions are being executed.
Things need to heat up to break the momentum of this aggressive virus since the probability of hopping international borders is also getting much higher.

Ebola outbreak: Guinea health team killed

Eight members of a team trying to raise awareness about Ebola have been killed by villagers using machetes and clubs in Guinea, officials say.

Some of the bodies - of health workers, local officials and journalists - were found in a septic tank in a village school near the city of Nzerekore.

Correspondents say many villagers are suspicious of official attempts to combat the disease.

More than 2,600 people have now died from the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

It is the world's worst outbreak of Ebola, with officials warning that more than 20,000 people could ultimately be infected.

Neighbouring Sierra Leone has begun a controversial three-day curfew to try to stop the spread of the disease.

The team disappeared after being pelted with stones by residents when they arrived in the village of Wome - in southern Guinea, where the Ebola outbreak was first recorded.

A journalist who managed to escape told reporters that she could hear villagers looking for them while she was hiding.

A government delegation, led by the health minister, had been dispatched to the region but they were unable to reach the village by road because a main bridge had been blocked.
'Killed in cold blood'

On Thursday night, government spokesman Albert Damantang Camara said the victims had been "killed in cold blood by the villagers".

The bodies showed signs of being attacked with machetes and clubs, officials say.

Six people have been arrested and the village is now reportedly deserted.

The motive for the killings has not been confirmed, but the BBC's Makeme Bamba in Guinea's capital, Conakry, says many villagers accuse the health workers of spreading the disease.

Others still do not believe that the disease exists.

Last month, riots erupted in Nzerekore, 50 km (30 miles) from Wome, after rumours that medics who were disinfecting a market were contaminating people.

Speaking on Thursday, French President Francois Hollande said France was setting up a military hospital in Guinea as part of his country's efforts to support the West African nations affected by the outbreak.

He said the hospital was a sign that France's contribution was not just financial, adding that it would be in "the forests of Guinea, in the heart of the outbreak".

The World Health Organization said on Thursday that more than 700 new cases of Ebola have emerged in West Africa in just a week, showing that the outbreak was accelerating.

It said there had been more than 5,300 cases in total and that half of those were recorded in the past three weeks.

The epidemic has struck Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Nigeria and Senegal.

A three-day lockdown is underway in Sierra Leone in a bid to stop the disease spreading.

First confirmed case of Ebola confirmed in the United States: CDC

The United States has one confirmed case of Ebola, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Tuesday, marking the first domestic appearance of the deadly virus that has ravaged swaths of continental Africa.

The as-yet unidentified patient is located in Dallas, officials say, effectively confirming a statement issued on Monday by Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas. The organization said that an unnamed patient was being tested for Ebola and had been placed in "strict isolation" due to the patient's symptoms and recent travel history.

In a press conference, CDC Director Tom Frieden said the patient in question had been traveling in Liberia, where he may have contracted the disease. He returned to the United States on the 20th of September, after which he sought care. Frieden attempted to assuage concerns about Ebola's contagious effect, saying that the virus was only spread through direct contact, and was not airborne. He vowed that officials would contain a potential spread.

"It is certainly possible that someone who had contact with this individual...could develop Ebola in the coming weeks," Frieden said, but added that "there is no doubt in my mind that we will stop it here," Frieden said.

Don't think it will be anywhere as bad as in Liberia. Any country that has decent health care will control it.

Nigeria and Senegal haven't had new cases for three weeks.

Had to chuckle when I saw this oui.

Shares of Companies Testing Ebola Vaccine Rise

Shares of several drugmakers developing potential vaccines or treatments for the deadly Ebola virus rose in premarket trading Wednesday, continuing a run that started Tuesday after federal officials confirmed that the first case of the disease has been diagnosed in the United States. Tekmira Pharmaceuticals Corp., Inovio Pharmaceuticals Inc. and NewLink Genetics Corp. all saw their stocks jump 6 percent or more about two hours before the markets open.

There are no proven drugs or vaccines for Ebola, a disease so rare that it's been hard to attract investments in countermeasures. The World Health Organization has worked to speed up the use of some experimental vaccines and companies are ramping up testing. Last month, NewLink Genetics said it would start safety testing of a vaccine within a few weeks. Inovio Pharmaceuticals plans to start human trials of a DNA-based vaccine in early 2015. The Food and Drug Administration has authorized the emergency use of a potential Tekmira treatment in West Africa.

Spanish nurse’s Ebola infection blamed on substandard equipment

Health professionals in Madrid have blamed substandard equipment and a failure to follow protocol for the first case of Ebola to be contracted outside west Africa.

Health authorities announced on Monday that a Spanish nurse at Madrid’s Carlos III hospital who treated a patient repatriated from Sierra Leone had twice tested positive for Ebola.

Her husband had also been admitted to hospital and was in isolation, and a second nurse from the same team that treated both repatriated Ebola victims was also being tested. In this case, the nurse contacted the authorities on Monday complaining of a fever. She was in isolation in the Carlos III Hospital while authorities waited for the test results, a spokesperson for the Madrid regional government said.

Staff at the hospital told El País that the protective suits they were given did not meet World Health Organisation (WHO) standards, which specify that suits must be impermeable and include breathing apparatus. Staff also pointed to latex gloves secured with adhesive tape as an example of how the suits were not impermeable and noted that they did not have their own breathing equipment.

The nurse was part of a team attending to missionary Manuel García Viejo, 69, who died four days after being brought to Carlos III hospital on 20 September. The same team, including the nurse, also treated missionary Miguel Pajares, 75, who was repatriated from Liberia in August and died five days later.

Staff at the hospital said waste from the rooms of both patients was carried out in the same elevator used by all personnel and, in the case of the second patient, the hospital was not evacuated.

The European commission said on Tuesday it had written to the Spanish health minister “to obtain some clarification” on how the nurse had become infected when all EU member states were supposed to have taken measures to prevent transmission.

“There is obviously a problem somewhere,” the commission spokesman Frédéric Vincent said.

Spanish health authorities have said that professionals treating Ebola patients in Spain always follow WHO protocols. The nurse would have entered García Viejo’s room just twice, said Antonio Alemany, from the regional government of Madrid, both times wearing protective equipment.

“We don’t know yet what failed,” Alemany said. “We are investigating the mechanism of infection.”

The nurse was in a stable condition. She had alerted the ministry of a slight fever on 30 September and been checked into a hospital in Alcorcón, on the outskirts of Madrid, with a high fever on Monday.

The nurse, who is married with no children, was transferred to Carlos III hospital early on Tuesday morning.

El Mundo reported that it was the nurse who asked to be tested for Ebola, having to insist repeatedly on being tested before it was done on Monday.

While staff at the Alcorcón hospital were waiting for the test results, the nurse remained in a bed in the emergency room, separated only by curtains from other patients, hospital staff told El Mundo. Their version of events clashes with that of health authorities, who have said the patient was isolated from the first moment.

The woman was on holiday at an unknown location when she began showing symptoms. “We are drawing up a list of all the people she may have been in contact with, including with health professionals at the Alcorcón hospital,” said Alemany, estimating that more than 30 people were being monitored for any sign of symptoms.

In August, Spain became the first European country in the current, fast-spreading outbreak to evacuate patients for treatment. The decision prompted concern among health professionals, who said Spanish hospitals were not adequately equipped to handle Ebola.

Ebola Virus

Postby blacklancer » October 7th, 2014, 7:15 pm

Are we in Trinidad truly ready to deal with this Virus, keeping in mind that people with dengue are still suffering at our nations hospitals and basic health care is still falling short. Is there any plan in place, our health minister says we are ready and there are things in place, are we going to believe this and take this as fact, Xmas and Carnival are around the corner visitors are coming from all over the world is there any screening process at Piarco, is there any quarantine area set aside, these are questions we all have to ask ourselves as fathers, mothers, sons and daughters etc. This is not a movie situation this is real life in real time, what are your thoughts Tuners.
