ACTING chief executive officer of the Water and Sewerage Authority, Dr Jim Lee Young, has officially resigned from his post.

He is being replaced by Englishman Andrew Smith, who took up duties at WASA yesterday. Sources at WASA said Smith was confirmed in the post last month.

In a short telephone interview with the Express yesterday, Lee Young said, ’I want to thank the board for the opportunity. I wish the new CEO all the best. WASA has done good work within the last few months and I expect that the new executive will continue the work.’

The company was scheduled to hold a press conference this week to update the country on the state of the water reserve levels but the Express was told by WASA communications manager, Ellen Lewis, that the press conference would be held next week. Last month it was confirmed that the country’s reserves have reached the lowest they had been in decades, with reservoirs being on average less that 60 per cent full. Rainfall levels have also been historically low.

Word of Lee Young’s resignation was leaked to newsrooms yesterday evening before the company issued any releases on the matter.

RESIGNED: Dr Jim Lee Young

Sources at WASA said Lee Young chose to leave and was not forced out.

Earlier this month, Lee Young was very vocal about his disapproval of an incident where a WASA truck was seen filling a pool at a residence in Westmoorings, despite stringent restrictions on the use of water several weeks ago.

It was reported that the residence where the water was delivered was being renovated for occupation by a WASA official and the water was needed for construction purposes.

Lee Young had promised a full probe into the matter. To date WASA has not released any further information on the probe.

Lee Young said the probe would now be the responsibility of WASA chairman Shafeek Sultan Khan.

Lee Young began his tenure at WASA in January as deputy CEO. He also acted as the CEO for the company, while it carried out its screening process to find someone to fill the role.

so d man express he disapproval with filling a swimming pool when we have a water crisis...which for construction purposes is an absurd reason...cause u just need a normal water tank for water purposes...how many houses here build with ah pool of water...much less RENOVATED?!!

and he was "forced" to resign for expressing this disapproval!!!

BTW why d ass they cudnt hire another "educated" TRINI to do d job?!!!
