Local DragonFly ~ Batimamselle
Dragonflies are an ancient group dating back to the Carboniferous Geologic period.
Many dragonflies have Brilliant Iridescent or Metallic Colours, making them conspicuous in flight.
There are around 6,500 species and they are found on every continent except Antarctica.
Each locale has developed a unique meaning to it, its behaviour and lifestyle.
Most cultures believe the dragonfly is a symbol of maturity, power and poise, self-realization, and living in the moment.
In Trinidad and Tobago, the word "batimamselle" is a descriptive synonym for dragonfly.
The English word "Batty", meaning crazy, odd, eccentric, and the patois word for woman, combined to describe the erratic flying patterns of this common insect
