Bayern Munich vs. Manchester United Legends Match: Date, Time and Preview

In a bid to recapture the magic of the 1998-99 Champions League final, a host of Bayern Munich stars from years gone by will line up against a group of their Manchester United counterparts on Saturday.

The Allianz Arena will see the current crop of Bayern bastions entertain with an open training session before the figures of old take to the stage.

Both the Red Devils and their German hosts have a glittering array of legends set to take part in the charity event, with some of those ex-maestros most worth keeping tabs on discussed ahead.

Date: Saturday, August 9

Time: 5:15 p.m. BST/12:15 p.m. ET

Teams

Manchester United will travel with a relatively spritely group of players this weekend, each of varying quality, with Bryan Robson managing a group that contains Edwin van der Sar, Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke.

The official United website confirms that Ronny Johnsen and Quinton Fortune will also be among those taking part, as well as Dion Dublin, Denis Irwin, ClaytonBlackmore and Mikael Silvestre.

Information on Bayern's side is more scarce, but it's known that the outfit will be led by 1974 World Cup winner and ex-West Germany captain Paul Breitner, with Paulo Sergio, Hans-Jorg Butt, MarkusBabbel also included.

The only Bayern Munich player set to line up with experience playing for the opposition, Owen Hargreaves should make for an intriguing storyline up against some of his former teammates.

The Bayern side will be captained by 1974 World Cup winner Paul Breitner, and while Hargreaves isn't the most decorated of their veterans, he is one with some of the most recent playing experience.

Admittedly, the midfield anchor's career ended in disappointing fashion, aforgettably short stint with Manchester City followed up with an exit fromQueens Park Rangers after only training with the west London club.

However, Hargreaves may still show himself to be of an elevated quality coming back to Bavaria and up against some slightly more aged foes—providing his knees hold out for the entirety of his involvement.

One of those names fans will be most looking forward to see on Saturday is that of Paul Scholes, who so sadly missed the 1999 Champions League final through suspension, and who will undoubtedly be eager to leave a lasting impression on this opportunity.

Bayern have a serious threat among their engine room ranks in the form of Mark van Bommel, and considering the two have only retired from football in recent years, spectators might still hope for a stellar clash between the two.

Charity event or not, Scholes is a tide-turning presence to admire on the pitch, and for every asset Bayern might boast, United have every chance of emerging as victors this weekend with him at their core.

Totally Man Utd offer a brief explanation of just how instrumental the former puppeteer has a tendency to be:

Gone are the days when the ex-United magician can be seen effortlessly spraying passes about for the Red Devils, but Saturday offers the briefest of looks back upon that which Europe used to marvel at.

watched the game live, twas a cracker, action from end to end, Robben looked good, Olic string up Neuer, the latter seemed to be distracted at the time though. all in all good game, better result for bayern.

He's changed a winning formula to a system where the most important cog spent most of his tenure so far on the injured list (thiago). That's my main gripe.
To add to that, deploying players out of position just because he has the option. Lately, its the use of the 3 central defenders although in all fairness, I haven't watch any of the league games yet.

All well and good that he's trying to chart his own course but its dumb to change the side he inherited from jupp.

Injury woes indeed. Wary of manc this time around as its the 3rd or 4th time they are in the same group with bayern being an English side and all. But should be a home win

Tiki Taka dead and this guy just refuses to get the memo.
As if Spain's embarrassment this WC wasn't enough. He's digging a bigger and bigger hole.
