Nope. It's called "West Coast Convergence". Nothing unusual about it really. It happens pretty often.

When the westerlies pick up and meet the prevailing NE winds, they converge over western T'dad.
So two moist, warm air masses meet head-on and they don't have anywhere else to go but up.

This promotes lift on a much larger scale than typical convective lifting, which aids in rapid and intense cumulonimbus development, so u get heavy showers and thundershowers in the west.

There's a ridge building and it looks like the ITCZ is filling in between the patches, so we might be in for a wet weekend. I'll post the 4-day later when I get to a pc.

not only in the west........
we were in Wallerfield doing circuit practice years sometime in the early 90s & I watched this same development hit the 'ceiling' of cold air & begin to travel east until it passed Wallerfield....boi...when that rain started to fall...place got 'black' like midnite & was about 5pm....

Oh yeah, the dynamics are fantastic to watch. Sometimes, the cooler mass sinks and the warmer, faster mass ramps up on it, carrying it further in either direction. You'll sometimes notice thunder and lightning out in the gulf and the land is bone dry or a surge in the westerly winds and cbs forming with higher bases than what u'd see from normal convection.

So long as there is no capping from a stable (colder) layer like u experienced (but in come cases it can penetrate this layer), or horizontal wind shear in the mid levels (which can offset the updrafts and clip the cb tops, u'll notice some cbs 'lean' to one side if they can overcome the clipping), once there's convergence, it's lift, lift and more lift.

Here's the 4-Day as promised.

Bulletin#

Date: Monday 10th of September 2012
ISSUED AT:03:36AM

PERIODS OF MODERATE TO HEAVY SHOWERS OVER TRINIDAD
AND TOBAGO MAY LEAD TO STREET/FLASH FLOODING.

Over the past few hours, parts of Trinidad and
Tobago, particularly northern and eastern areas
of Trinidad and western areas of Tobago, have
been experiencing cloudy/overcast conditions with
periods of rain and showers, some of which have
been moderate to heavy. This rainfall activity is
due to the presence of the Inter Tropical
Convergence Zone (ITCZ).

Cloudy to overcast conditions with periods of rain
and/or showers, some of which can be moderate to
heavy at times and isolated thundershowers is
expected to continue over Trinidad in particular
and Tobago throughout today with slow and gradual
improvement as the day progresses, becoming
settled by nightfall..
It should be noted that gusty winds will
accompany moderate occasionally heavy rainfall
and the possibility of localized street and flash
flooding and landslides/landslips may occur in the
vicinity of heavy showers and thundershowers. Be
alert to electrical discharges in the vicinity of
thundershowers. Rainfall accumulations could be in
excess of 25 – 30 mm, as such, rivers of
moderate carrying capacity may become bankful.
Citizens are therefore advised to be vigilant and
cautious as they conduct their activities during
the course of the day.

WE WISH TO UNDERSCORE THAT AT THIS TIME TRINIDAD
AND TOBAGO IS NOT UNDER ANY TROPICAL STORM
THREAT, WATCH OR WARNING.

The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service is
closely monitoring this weather situation and
will issue another bulletin if the situation
warrants.
