TERROR IN PARADISE Brit tourists warned over ISIS attacks on Trinidad & Tobago as Caribbean island becomes new breeding ground for jihadis

FEARS are growing that the idyllic tourist destination of Trinidad and Tobago could face a new wave of terror attacks from returning ISIS jihadis.

Incredibly, the beautiful Caribbean nation, home to just 1.3 million people, has the highest rate of ISIS foreign recruitment in the Western hemisphere.

Image
The idyllic holiday destination is now bracing itself for the return of those nationals as the ISIS caliphate in Syria and Iraq crumbles

Some 125 nationals are believed to have travelled to Syria and Iraq to join the barbaric group's failing attempt to establish an Islamic caliphate.

By comparison, the US with 240 times the population has just 250 citizens fighting for the group in the Middle East.

It is feared these jihadis could return to start launching attacks on embassies or tourist groups. Around 30,000 Brits visit the country every year.

The Foreign Office warns: "Terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Trinidad & Tobago. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreigners.

Image
Notorious Trinidad jihadi Abu Sa’d at-Trinidadi featured in the group's propaganda magazine Dabiq

"More than 100 Trinidad and Tobago nationals have travelled to Syria and Iraq to fight along with Daesh (formerly referred to as ISIL) and are likely to pose a security threat on return.

"There’s also a threat from individuals who may have been inspired by terrorist groups, including Daesh and al Qaeda, to carry out so-called ‘lone actor’ attacks targeting public events or places."

Olivier Guitta, the managing director of security and risk consultants GlobalStrat, told The Sun Online: "If returnees in Trinidad and Tobago were to plan attacks, I would guess that the huge and prosperous oil industry will be the first target in

Trinidad and the travel industry in Tobago is as well a likely target."

But he added it was significantly easier for authorities to catch returning jihadis in the small nation than somewhere like Britain or France.

"The question is will jihadists try to return to Trinidad and Tobago or move to other theatres of jihad such as Libya or South East Asia?

"It's much easier for authorities in Trinidad and Tobago to catch a returning jihadist at the airport than for instance in the UK or France.

"In a way, Trinidad and Tobago is not more at risk than the UK or France but we’ve seen how both countries have been hit by jihadist terrorism."

Last year Trinidad jihadi Shane Crawford, who goes by the nom-de guerre Abu Sa'd at-Trinidadi, featured in the group's propaganda magazine.

The sniper called one called on ISIS supporters back home to "attack the interests of the Crusader coalition", including embassies, businesses and civilians.

He said: "Follow the example of the lions in France and Belgium, the example of the blessed couple in California, and the examples of the knights in Orlando and Nice.

"You have the ability to terrify the disbelievers in their own homes and make their streets run with their blood."

Faris al-Rawi, the attorney general for Trinidad and Tobago, told Middle East Eye the government was looking at measures to stop the return of radicalised nationals.

This included detention, forfeiture of travel documents and citizenship removal.

He said: "There are a number of jurisdictions that have been experimenting with these laws: Australia, Malaysia, Canada, the United States.

"These types of laws are recent laws; they're not entrenched long-standing laws and so there is still room for judicial guidance."

Juan S. Gonzalez, a former deputy assistant secretary of state for Western Hemisphere affairs, told The New York Times: "As the United States continues to corner ISIS and defeat them, a lot of these guys aren’t going to feel they have safe quarters.

"Is the Caribbean, Trinidad and Tobago, the United States, prepared for these guys to return back to their countries? This is a real vulnerability."

The longest running non story ever.

Oh how they wish,no but I'm sorry T&T won't endure what London Paris etc has, they won't feel good till it happens here,it's the only way their theories would be correct, they never figured the wutless non-committed flip flopping Trini husslers in the equation who's parents and siblings are probably Limbo dancers masqueraders and chutney singers, the deep jihadi ideals they're looking for simply does not exist here, just husslers who have figured out that they stood a better chance surviving in Syria than on the block in T&T.

Trini ISIS recruitment to feature on National Geographic

Young Muslim men leaving Trinidad to fight for the Islamic State (ISIS) will be featured in a National Geographic documentary.

According to an online report on dispatch.com the eight-part documentary series “Chain of Command,” offers an unprecedented look at the war against violent extremism and the men and women devoting their lives to it.

The report stated that to shoot the documentary, film crews were embedded during the 18 months of production with military forces in some of the most “dangerous spots on the planet”

The series, it stated, narrated by Chris Evans (“Captain America”), will premiere Monday night with a look at the battle for Mosul, Iraq — where U.S. Army Capt. Quincy Bahler of the 101st Airborne Division monitors ISIS fighters via drone feeds alongside Iraqi generals, debating when it is safe to strike in an effort to liberate the city.

“The debut episode will be followed by another episode, in which, after the American and Iraqi coalition gains control of eastern Mosul, the fight shifts to the city's west side. Meanwhile, on the Caribbean island of Trinidad, the Muslim community struggles to deal with the alarming reality of their young people leaving the country to fight for ISIS,” stated the report.

Executive producer Scott Boggins was quoted as saying “It's been an amazing experience to be able to meet and then tell the stories of these heroes,”.

“They're inspiring individuals from the highest levels of the U.S. military to the boots on the ground. We were always with groups of men and women who showed incredible commitment, and we were there with them to tell their stories during this time where extremism affects everyone.” he added.

The report stated that the series records the fight against radical threats in every corner of the world as it unfolds over a year. This includes following Marine Gen. Joe Dunford and the Joint Chiefs of Staff creating policy and strategy that are then executed on the battlefield, revealing firsthand how the decisions made at the Pentagon directly affect our service members on the front lines.

It noted that even with access, the story was a challenge to report because the teams are in remote parts of the world.

The key, Boggins said, was learning to adapt and follow the lead of the military — to ensure that the series was immersive.

“It's the proverbial fly on the wall, so to speak, and we really are that,” Boggins said. “We get to know the people in such an intimate way, and then we get to tell what they do, the mission that they're on, and then we tackle the larger questions.”

Jeff Hasler, head of development and production at National Geographic Studios, said the cuts and editing of the footage were made by the film crew.

“For us, we have a 188-year tradition at National Geographic of journalist integrity (and) accuracy — and everyone who works at National Geographic carries that like a banner,” Hasler said.

The report stated that “Chain of Command” will air in 171 countries and 43 languages.

Waajihatul Islamiyyah (The Islamic Front) leader Umar Abdullah has candidly confessed to having encouraged young Muslims to leave Trinidad for Syria to fight for the Islamic extremist group ISIS.

But he says the person who circulated a clipping from a documentary he did with a National Geographic correspondent was a wicked, vile person with no good intention.

“They showed just the particular part where I made that admission but not the rest, which contained meaningful content to the story National Geographic wanted to tell. The story of my life and views from an Islamic standpoint,” he said.

Like dumbass didn't learn from Anthony Bordain.

And he was recruiting for free?

I wonder if per capita we have the same amount of recruits for the US Army.

Nat Geo s piece isn't a neutral assessment.

The Canadian High Commission in Port of Spain has updated its travel advice on this country to include a separation of the travel advisory on crime for Tobago from Trinidad, and a warning on terrorism.

The update has come a day after a round of courtesy calls on Trinidad and Tobago Government ministers, culminating with Tuesday's meeting between Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister Stuart Young and Canadian High Commissioner Carla Hogan Rufelds.

The Ottawa-based government of Canada issued the advisory and described the updates as a “thorough review and update of the entire travel advice content”. Yesterday, however, a further editorial change was made and now the “latest updates” say only that an “editorial change” was made.
