Former chairman of the West Indies cricket selectors, Sir Vivian Richards, and the other members of his panel, Joey Carew and Gordon Greenidge have been accused of being dictatorial, intimidatory and spiteful.
According to a source on the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB), Richards may have taken “in front” when he “opted” to give up his position on the selection panel, in preference to a contract with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), as a commentator for the present England tour.
“Richards knew that he was unlikely to be retained. We received a letter from the Players Association (WIPA), which expressed concerns about his conduct as chairman of the panel.
“In fact, WIPA was forced to intervene on behalf of no less than six players who described the conduct of Richards and other members of his panel as dictatorial, intimidatory and spiteful.
“Players reported that they were bullied and belittled by Richards, who often came into their dressing room and instead of trying to motivate them, told them some very hurtful things.” The source said the Board was quite concerned over the contents of WIPA’s letter and may have decided in any case not to continue with Richards.
“Although allegations have also been made against Carew, we felt that it would not be in our best interest to remove him at this stage. We opted instead for continuity,” it was stated.
It is also well known that while there are efforts to gloss over it, Richards’ relationships with certain key men in the current team, including captain Brian Lara, are quite strained.
“Richards confronted Lara on certain things he wrote in his column in the Trinidad Guardian and told him that as far as he was concerned, he should not be writing,” said our source.
When contacted, WIPA chairman Dinanath Ramnarine confirmed that his association had written to the Board and complained about the behaviour of the selectors.
Ramnarine said WIPA wanted an investigation.
He said he had received several complaints from players who did not want to be identified because they felt they would be victimised.
“I am indeed satisfied that no team can perform at its full potential in an atmosphere in which autocratic conduct, spite and discord are ever present. It is the Association’s view that a selector’s duty is a sacred one, rooted in fair play and trust,” said Ramnarine.
The WIPA chairman, who took 45 wickets for the West Indies in only 12 Test matches, said it was not his intention to be involved in a war of words with Richards, who yesterday described him as “one of the laziest individuals you could ever find.”
Ramnarine said: “Sir Viv has made a great contribution to the game and there is nothing that anyone can do to change that. I wish him well in his new role as a broadcaster with the BBC.”
