Only two weeks ago, late D’Abadie/O’Meara MP Lisa Morris-Julian had been approved by the People’s National Movement to contest the seat again in the 2025 general elections.

Gonzales disputes fire service on water supply during fatal Arima fire

Public Utilities Minister Marvin Gonzales is disputing claims by the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service that there was an insufficient water supply during their emergency response to a tragic fire on Monday that resulted in the deaths of Minister in the Ministry of Education and Member of Parliament for D’Abadie/O’Meara, Lisa Morris-Julian and her two children.

In an update late Monday night, Gonzales said a water supply was boosted to the area before the fire officials arrived at the scene.

Gonzales is also calling for a retraction:

“…at no point during the incident was there a lack of water pressure or the availability of water in general. The facts are as follows:

“The Hollis System which supplies water to Farfan Street was ramped up to full production several days prior on the 12th of December, and due to improvements in the Hollis Reservoir, the production of the facility was then increased again on the 15th of December 2024, this confirming the area had a reliable water supply.

“At 4:30 am, the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) was alerted to a fire within the heart of Arima along Farfan Street. Immediate action was taken to divert supply via the Subero Street Booster to increase the pressure in the Farfan Street area.

“Another water source, off the Guanapo Water Treatment Plant was used as an auxiliary supply via the supply valving operations in the vicinity of Hearty Foods and Sorzano Street at approximately 5:30 am to ensure that an alternate supply can be introduced into the area if required.

“The adjustments in the water supply pressure, to the area occurred prior to the arrival of the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service.”

Gonzales said additionally, Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley visited the scene later that morning and was told by the Chief Fire Officer that there was an adequate water supply.

“The Minister of Public Utilities condemns the gross and unfortunate misrepresentation of the facts of this tragic incident and the added grief it has caused.

“The Minister further demands a retraction of the misleading communication by the Corporate Communications Department of the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Services.”

The response comes after questions over the immediacy of the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service’s response to the tragic fire which occurred early Monday morning.

Morris-Julian, her daughter and six-year-old son perished in the fire after becoming trapped in the house. Her husband was rushed to hospital for treatment.

The Fire Service said Monday that the Arima Fire Station appliance had been redirected to another site where an industrial fire occurred, while the Tunapuna Fire Station’s appliance had been redirected to another house fire.

The fire service said that upon arrival a request was made for additional water due to a lack of a supply in the area.

The Arima community and country remains in shock and mourning as Dr Rowley and other Ministers visited the scene on Monday, many of them in tears.

The fire service said it’s launched an investigation into the incident – information regarding the origin of the fire remains uncertain.

Ahhhh the infamous blame game begins. You can't blame the fire services if the employer fails to provide the basic tools and resources for the job at hand.

Whether is the fire service lack of water or wasa not sending water there, it all goes back to being controlled by the Government that she worked in so who's really to blame .

I'm suspecting it's a similar occurance with other arms of nat sec and by extension the public service on a whole but since it was a PNM minister who met her demise everyone running to cover their tails
