TWO separate accidents in Chaguanas yesterday, including one involving three members of the Trinidad and Tobago Regiment, led to the hospitalisation of three people, with two listed as being in critical condition. Police said that around 3 a.m., a 32-year-old man was heading south along Factory Road in Chaguanas with two female passengers when his vehicle (a Ford Ranger) collided with a white Toyota Corolla driven by 24-year-old Sham Ali.
The Ford Ranger then ran off the road and overturned in an abandoned cane field.
Ali was alone in the car and all four victims were taken to Chaguanas Health Facility.
Officers of Chaguanas Police Station who accompanied the injured four to the health centre then administered a breathalyser to the driver of the Ford Ranger, who was subsequently arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.
The two women, along with Ali, were later taken to Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex at Mt Hope.
Earlier yesterday morning, around 2.30, there was another accident.
Police said a T&T Regiment SUV, with a Regiment sergeant, another soldier and the driver, was heading east along Montrose Main Road when the soldier behind the wheel opted to overtake a line of vehicles and collided with another car driven by a United States citizen, James Bail, who was with his wife.
When police arrived on the scene, the soldier driving the SUV was administered the breathalyser test, which he failed.
He was arrested and is expected to appear before a Chaguanas magistrate today.
Bail and his wife were taken to Chaguanas Health Facility where they were treated and discharged.
Chaguanas police are continuing investigations into both accidents.
