A review of all security services contracts especially for Cash In Transit will be done which started yesterday. I would be remiss to say that two top commercial banks in this country would allow such an unprepared Firm to handle that amount of cash in transit.

17 million in cash is plenty to carry
500 notes weigh about a pound(US currency)
$50,000 per pound
20 lbs per million
340 lbs of cash?

Highway bandits made off with $3.1 million
Friday, November 29 2013

POLICE searching for three bandits who shot and killed security guard Bert Clarke, 59, in the robbery of a security van on Wednesday along the Churchill Roosevelt Highway, last night told Newsday the killers got away not with $250,000 as was initially thought, but $3.1 million.

On Wednesday morning Clarke of Bregon Park, D’Abadie, was killed after armed robbers hijacked a Sentinel Security Services van on the Churchill Roosevelt Highway as it was transporting a large quantity of cash. The bandits got away with six bags of cash, which police sources yesterday said was estimated to be over $3.1 million. Officers added that in addition to the $3.1m in TT dollars, the bags also contained US$42,000 (TT$269,640).

As police investigators probe deeper into what sources called a “well-orchestrated ambush” investigators said the cash, being transported by a Sentinel Security Services Ltd van, was being taken to the Piarco Airport to be transferred to a bank in Tobago.

On Wednesday, police reported that a white van owned by Sentinel Security Services Limited was proceeding East along the highway en route from Port-of-Spain to the Piarco International Airport. At about 4.30 am, on nearing the Johnson and Johnson Limited building, the security van was suddenly struck from behind by a black Ford Ranger.

The security van spun several times before coming to a stop in front of the warehouse. It was at this moment, that the occupants of the Ford Ranger jumped out of their vehicle and approached the security van, with guns in their hands.

Without warning, the bandits opened fire on the panel van, hitting Clarke who was in the passenger side of the van multiple times about his head and chest. He died in the van where he was sitting. Another security officer who was driving the vehicle, jumped out and ran into nearby bushes.

After the bandits grabbed the six money bags, a white Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) pulled along side the security van and the bandits jumped into the SUV which sped off. The other security guard, who was hiding in the bushes, alerted the police from his cellular phone.

Officers led by Snr Supt David Abraham and including Supt John Daniel, Inspector Mark Maharaj, Sgt Rene Katwaroo and others visited the scene. Sources said that over 50 spent shells were retrieved at the crime scene. The white SUV which was used as the “get away” vehicle was eventually recovered near the Piarco Airport. Investigations are continuing.

With that kinda money expect more to come out. Double crossing, back stabbing, police officers trying to get a cut. The underworld is a tight network, they know who did the job.

Inside ting.. I saying de obvious, but what else can be said?

And too many firms starting without certification or training. any old Tom, Dick and Harrylal seems can start a firm without training and say day is "security".

With that execution, 17Million+ does seem to be enough motivation. But 3 stolen vehicles though? They REALLY planned this well.

whilst we joke and make these comments, you all realise how SERIOUS of a crime this really is?
Very Well thought out pre conceived Planning, but more than 50 rounds of ammo being spent? you all realise how many innocent people could have been seriously injured or killed?
In full public view on a highway on the nations roadways.
Have bandits gotten this ignorant and boldface?

Sad if this is a sign of future crimes to come.....

After the robbers left, the bank manager told the bank supervisor to call the police quickly. The supervisor says "Wait, wait wait, let's put the 5 million RMB we embezzled into the amount the robbers robbed".

^ with figures coming from the bank.....tend to feel is more of the case above...

Cheapness coupled with, "it won't happen to us." even though robberies kept happening to Sentinel. They didn't want to spend the money on real armoured vehicles, instead decided to go with vehicles that are less secure than the average Carib truck. The banks didn't want to pay extra for a security company with armoured vehicles.

The way those bandits were organised and the ease at which they were able to get at the money, they might as well used tear gas.

Someone will squeal though or get greedy or stupid. Too much money for human nature not to kick in.

The banks should be held accoountable for using woefully inadequate security

why not close down all security companies who do not make the required operational standard and only issue licenses to those who meet the grade.
i.e - just off the top of my head
adequate vehicles
armored vehicles
adequate personnel
proper training regime
adequate arms and ammunition for protection
all the other requirements etc etc

If companies care about the safety of their money then they wouldnt hire these "security companies" anyway so they would be forced to step up or close down

If the customers were willing to pay for standardized delivery of service it might be something easy to enforce.

In an environment where customers want it bess price, and where the regulatory bodies do not enforce the requirements then you get substandard delivery being the rule.

not all security firms work directly for a client. They sometimes subcontract one another for some jobs.
