Loeb 12 seconds ahead of Powell for the qualifier :/. Stage starts 7:45, what time is that in trinidad time?

So we are all settled at the Hotel in Spain. It's COLD, but otherwise nice. With the exception of Loeb we've seen just about every other driver and team in the WRC. John and Mike are on their second day of pace notes, and today is the official scrutineering. The pace note cars are all Volvo S60 with full cages, seats, harnesses, headsets, GPS, and as strange as it is - 2 hand brakes, one normal and one hydraulic. The Ford and M-Sport Team all move together, and this morning it was a crazy sight this morning with John, Mike, Latvala, Solberg, and Tanak all heading out of the carpark.

We are going to scope out the service park in a bit, internet is slower than dial up so pictures are going to be a task. Will keep you posted.

He is only 12th in the shake down i think 18 seconds off the fastest cars , so he got 12 seconds in 3 k that is 4 seconds per km the first stage is 7 km and the second is 26km .....do the math , he will be S2000 and N4 fodder , but he beat paulo nobre though.

John Powell began his attack of the WRC Rally Spain 2012 this morning with the all the hope and pride of local motorsport fans. He started amongst the world's best including 9-time and current World Champion Sebastien Loeb, and multiple winner and Ford teammate Petter Solberg. Driving for Team Ford M-Sport, Powell had 2 practice runs this morning followed by the qualifying stage which determines the start order for Rally Spain.

Driving a WRC Ford Fiesta for the first time Powell was able to keep the rest of the field within sight as he tried his best to acclimatize to a car that he has never competed in before. With the first run he was 17 seconds adrift of Loeb, and with the second pass managed to close to 15 seconds. With 2 practice runs under his belt Powell drove extremely well to eventually sit 12 seconds behind Loeb, the eventual winner of the qualifying round.

The M-Sport management were very pleased with Powell's start to the event, while John himself was just happy to get the nerves out on the first few runs. This leaves John 16th overall, beating a few other WRC career drivers in the process. Rally Spain 2012 officially starts Friday morning, and will finish Sunday testing the drivers in over 300km of gravel and tarmac surfaces.

The Jamaicans I spoke to today actually blame the incompetency of their own ministry of sport for Powell representing T+T... They claim that he received no support here (Jamaica) either monetary or diplomatically.

Anyway, it's not the first time a Powell transferred to T+T... Who say Ricardo Powell!

SALOU, SPAIN. After a hectic morning of qualifying stages in Salou, both WRC driver John Powell and navigator Mike Fennel are ready for the shakedown stages driving a WRC Ford Fiesta RS.

With Thursday's qualifying session permitting two complete passes of free practice and one complete pass in an attempt to set the fastest time possible in championship order, Powell and Fennel churned up a reasonable time 12 seconds behind leader Sebastien Loeb.    The qualifying stage was a great opportunity to see teams in action along with service crews.  Jamaica`s Mike Fennel said, “We had some struggles in feeling out the car today.  There was a difference of shifting which came at about 8000 rpm, but we are still confident for Friday`s shakedown on the gravel.  The reception is great from all the WRC racers and we have grown accustomed to the difference in time which is roughly about six hours ahead of the Caribbean. John and myself have made the qualification and we are excited.”

Both Powell and Fennel were featured later in the evening at the meet and greet event for all WRC teams held at the breathtaking Barcelona Cathedral`s compound.  There was a ramp provided where the Mayor of Barcelona officially commenced Rally de Espana 2012 amidst loud cheers from Spanish rally fans.  Several WRC teams were also photographed and their race cars paraded down the ramp and disappeared into the streets.  Day 1 on Friday will prove a better option for the Caribbean pair as they head out to the gravel stages in Gandesa, Pessels and Terra Alta in the morning from Port Aventura.  Lunch will not be long as teams are afforded only thirty minutes and resume to a mixture of gravel and asphalt stages.  However, these stages are much longer and should provide some challenges for the newest members of the FORD M-SPORT team.

Rally de Espana is the last event on the WRC agenda for 2012 but is expected to  generate large crowds throughout the four day schedule and will conclude on Sunday with a Special Stage.
