Govt to hold post-budget rally in TobagoPrime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar will be in Tobago next weekend for the People's Partnership post-budget rally at Old Market Square, Scarborough.
Ashworth Jack, political leader of the Tobago Organisation of the People (TOP), told the Express by phone on Friday that he and all the other leaders of the People's Partnership coalition —Persad-Bissessar, Congress of the People (COP) leader Prakash Ramadhar and National Joint Action Committee (NJAC) leader Makandal Daaga — are all expected to attend and speak at the event scheduled to start at 6 p.m. next Saturday.
On Wednesday the four leaders of the coalition met at the Diplomatic Centre, St Ann's. According to Jack, a number of internal issues were discussed as well as the upcoming Tobago House of Assembly (THA) elections carded for early next year.
A release from the Office of the Prime Minister stated that the meeting of the leaders validated the unswerving commitment between all parties to an alliance driven by mutual respect and common goals.
The release stated that resolutions emanating from the meeting included the convening of a special meeting of the chairmen of the four coalition partners, which would be held before the next meeting of political leaders of the People's Partnership.
According to the release, it was also agreed that leadership meetings of the partners of the People's Partnership would be held each month and on a more regular basis to facilitate and maintain a stronger relationship among members of the alliance.
It was also established that the senior executive of each of the four coalition partners would engage in a leadership meeting of the Partnership twice a year.
Jack told the Express that the leaders' meeting came after a lull of about two months.
Describing the meeting as "extremely productive and cordial" Jack, when questioned said former coalition partner David Abdulah, leader of the Movement for Social Justice (MSJ), was not missed at all.
The MSJ cut ties with the coalition taking issue with the Partnership's governance policies.
Jack said the Partnership Government remains strong and credited the Prime Minister for removing persons from her Cabinet, not for personal reasons but for the interest of the people.
Turning to the budget, Jack said the removal of Value Added Tax (VAT) will be of benefit to the people of Tobago but he stressed that Tobago needs to be self-sufficient and grow its own food and developing its agricultural sectors.
