Pan! Our Music Odyssey, an eagerly awaited docudrama about the steelpan, will have its world premiere when it opens the ninth edition of the Trinidad+Tobago Film Festival (TTFF) on Tuesday 16 September.

The film, several years in the making, was written by Kim Johnson, the foremost pan researcher in T&T. He is the author of such books as The Illustrated Story of Pan and If Yuh Iron Good You is King: The Pan Pioneers of Trinidad and Tobago.

Belgium-born filmmaker Jérôme Guiot—who has been awarded in France for his music-video work with the pop artist Stromae—directed the film. Barthélémy Fougea (who received the César, the French equivalent of the Oscar, for best documentary in 2014 for the film On the Way to School) and Jean Michel Gibert (Maturity Productions/Caribbean Music Group) served as producers.

The writer, director and producers will be present to introduce the film.

“I always thought of T&T as the place to unveil Pan! to the public,” said Gibert. “I am happy we will be doing so at the TTFF, before the film travels abroad to other film festivals, theatrical releases, and network television.”

Eighty minutes long, Pan! Our Music Odyssey tells the epic story of pan, the only new acoustic musical instrument invented in the twentieth century.

The film boldly dramatises the almost mythical invention of pan in the 1940s, and then surges forward to tell the stories of people from all over the world—T&T, France, Japan, the USA—who have staked everything on their love of the instrument, and whose passion and daring draw them each year to the “world championships” of steelpan, Panorama.

Pan! is interlaced with dramatic re-enactments of the rags-to-riches tale of the steelband movement, which was born into poverty and violence but climbed to the highest levels of social and artistic acceptance without losing its life-or-death urgency.

The result is an extraordinary global human adventure, as rousing and life-affirming as any great pan symphony.

“The TTFF is honoured to be associated with Pan!, a film that celebrates the history of our magnificent steelpan,” said Bruce Paddington, Founder and Festival Director, TTFF. “We are proud that it will be opening the Festival, on what we expect to be a triumphant note.”.



The screening of Pan! will take place on the evening of Tuesday, September 16th 2014 at the historic Globe cinema in Port of Spain, from 6.30pm. After the screening, guests will head over to the Zen nightclub for a reception and cash-bar after-party.

Defending champ Total Monster smashed a new course record of one hour, eight minutes and 50 seconds to win its second straight title at the 46th Annual Carib Great Race yesterday. The 46’ Skater catamaran arrived in Scarborough over seven minutes ahead of second place Fire One (1:16:00) while Stampede nabbed third in 1:20:05.

It marked an 11-minute improvement from its winning time last year, set by the same crew of driver Joey Sabeeney, throttleman Peter Peake and navigator Daniel Peake. Having dropped to as low as fourth during the early stages of the race, Monster wrestled the lead by the end of the Gulf circuit and never looked back.

Its battle for supremacy in the 130mph A Class ended in anticlimax as major rival and 17-time champ Mr Solo failed to complete the race while Paramount limped to the finish in 1:58:36.
Sabeeney said that for the most part, everything had gone according to plan over the 115 miles. “You can never be overconfident going into the Great Race because the conditions can always do a lot of damage but we knew that once everything held together, we would finish first,” he said. “Our plan was to get the lead and ensure that we maintained a gap between us and the rest. Once we broke free we just kept at our speed until the end. It was a job well done.”

Global Warmer, the lone entrant in the 110mph C Class, was fourth to cross the line in 1:24:50 while the E Class’s Energiza (80mph) defied expectations to nab fifth in 1:25:35. The 38’ Bowen, which had stepped up from the F Class (70mph) for the first time, upset the 95 mph D Class’s Bacchanal (1:31:23) and Chris Gone Wilder (1:32:26) for a spot in the top five. Rite Formula was the lone F Class boat to make it to Tobago, clocking 2:01:02 as its peers Cynisa, Chris Gone Wild and Extreme Measures shut down along the way.

Among the G Class (60 mph) boats, Infusion IV (2:00:55) edged PP Conquerer (2:02:40) for first place. In all, ten of the race’s 26 boats did not finish the race, one less than last year.
