Most likely what you are seeing are the "Stations of the Cross" - each one representing an incident that occurred involving Jesus on his way to be crucified. Believers walk from one to the other, publicly recalling the various incidents. This tradition helps them to make Jesus' suffering and death more real to themselves, thus assisting them in understanding their concept of salvation, and it's price.

I just wish some of those 'worthies' would spend similar time and effort publicly recalling how Jesus lived... thus assisting them in understanding the concepts Jesus taught, how he wanted them to live, and treat others.
