Not photoshop. Think about cameras then, size, weight and exposure time to film. And then think about the person taking the documentary photo on a professional camera with a mount. So the man just took off his hat for the proper documentary photo which is of much higher quality probably gelatin film and longer exposure time. The actual selfie is probably a low quality budget Kodak camera at the time. He just had his hat on for that one. Who knows if both were even done on the same day. We can't take the modern day context of selfies to mean the same thing back then.

On the other hand, photoshop was probably invented around that time 1920s by the new Soviet Union to spread propaganda. Stalin was infamous for a lot of edited photos from his past.
