Ribery scoops second award in 24 hours
BERLIN, Dec 22, 2013 (AFP) - Less than 24 hours after being voted player of the tournament at the Club World Cup, France's Franck Ribery has again been named Man of the Year in Germany.
After he also won the title in 2008, German football magazine Kicker voted the 30-year-old France star their man of 2013 for his outstanding displays for Bayern Munich.
The France winger joins some prestigious previous winners including Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp in 2012 and Germany boss Joachim Loew, the 2011 recipient.
On Saturday, Ribery picked up the top player award at the Club World Cup as Bayern beat hosts Raja Casablanca 2-0 in the Marrakech final to collect their fifth title of 2013.
"This year he has taken the step up to the level of absolute world class," Bayern's chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.
Ribery was a key factor in Bayern becoming the first German team to win the treble of Champions League, Bundesliga and German Cup last season, as well as the UEFA Super Cup.
In August, Ribery was voted European Player of the Year and will discover next month if he has been voted world player of the year.
The 2013 winner of the Balloon d'Or will be announced in Zurich on January 13 and Ribery has been shortlisted along with superstars Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Having joined Bayern from Olympique Marseille in July 2007, Ribery has not always had an easy time at Bayern and struggled under previous coach Louis van Gaal.
"Of course, I have my own style, many individuals need their freedom and that particularly applies to me," he told Monday's edition of Kicker.

Lewandowski signs five-year deal with Bayern... and he won't cost a penny!
By JOHN DRAYTON
PUBLISHED: 08:15 EST, 4 January 2014 | UPDATED: 14:49 EST, 4 January 2014
Bayern Munich have ended speculation after confirming Robert Lewandowski will join them from Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund this summer.
Lewandowski had announced his intention to quit the Westfalenstadion once his contract expires at the end of the season, and has been continually linked with domestic and European champions Bayern.
The Bavarian giants confirmed they had reached an agreement with the Poland international, who has put pen to paper on a five-year deal from July 1, 2014.
A statement on Bayern's Twitter feed said: '£FCBayern have signed Robert Lewandowski (25)! The striker has signed a 5-year contract until 2019.'
Signed, sealed, delivered: Robert Lewandowski has agreed a deal to join Bayern Munich from Dortmund
The 25-year-old becomes the second star to cross the divide in as many years after midfielder Mario Gotze.
He had been linked with a move to both Chelsea and Manchester United, but Bayern were reported to have closed the deal as early as last summer.
Bundesliga leaders Bayern currently lie 12 points ahead of Dortmund who are fourth.
Lewandowski was also rumoured to be coveted by several Premier League clubs including Chelsea and Manchester United but Bayern have won the race his signature.
Boss Pep Guardiola attempted to lure Lewandowski to the Allianz Arena soon after taking charge last summer but Dortmund refused to sell their prized asset so soon after losing Gotze.
Bargain: Lewandowski will sign for Bayern for free when his contract with Dortmund runs out in the summer
Yet Lewandowski hinted his long-term future lay away from Dortmund and it comes as little surprise that he has chosen Bayern as his next club.
Chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge was delighted with the deal, saying on Bayern's official website: 'We are very pleased that this transfer is successful. Robert Lewandowski is one of the world's best strikers, he will strengthen the squad of FC Bayern and give us a boost.
'We are very pleased that today, from both sides, a five-year contract was signed until 2019.'
Lewandowski has scored 65 times in 115 Bundesliga appearances after moving to Dortmund from Lech Poznan in June 2010 for a fee that was reported to be worth 4.5million euros.
Gotcha: Dortmund were desperate to hold onto Lewandowski after losing Mario Gotze to rivals Bayern
Got his man: Among Pep Guardiola's first orders of business when he got to Bayern was a push for the Pole
He is the joint top-scorer in the league this season with 11 goals, the same as Hertha Berlin striker Adrian Ramos, yet Dortmund are 12 points adrift of Bayern, who also have a game in hand, which may have strengthened Lewandowski's resolve.
The Warsaw man's deal brings into question the future of Bayern forward Mario Mandzukic, who has been linked with a move to Juventus.
However, earlier this week, his representative saw no reason why Mandzukic would want to leave the club.
'Mandzukic is focusing on Bayern Munich and after the end of this season, he still has two years on his contract and he is happy in Munich,' Ivan Cvjetkovic told Italy's Tuttosport newspaper.
Staying put: Striker Mario Mandzukic wants to remain in Munich despite the imminent arrival of Lewandowski
Robben, Schweinsteiger, Badstuber head to Qatar with Bayern
5 January 2014
Injured trio Arjen Robben, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Holger Badstuber will form part of Bayern Munich's training camp in Qatar.
The newly crowned FIFA Club World Cup winners jetted out to Doha on Sunday to start a mid-season warm-weather training break.
And Robben (gashed knee), Schweinsteiger (ankle) and Badstuber (knee) are among the 27-player party set to be put through their paces in Asia as they continue their rehabilitation from spells on the sidelines.
Winger Robben was ruled out for six weeks at the start of December, while midfielder Schweinsteiger has been absent since undergoing ankle surgery in November.
Defender Badstuber is battling to get his career back on track after two cruciate knee ligament injuries, with the 24-year-old's last competitive appearance coming in a Bundesliga clash against Borussia Dortmund in December 2012.
Bayern sporting director Matthias Sammer hinted that Schweinsteiger is closer to a possible first-team return than Robben.
"I'm hoping it'll be quick. After two or three days he might be able to manage parts of the squad sessions," Sammer told the club's official website.
On Robben, he added: "We'll take a very good look at how well he copes with the training load, but we can definitely say this: given the extent of the injury, his recovery is optimal."
Bayern face friendlies against Al-Merreikh on Thursday and Kuwait SC on January 13 before returning to Europe for an exhibition against Salzburg prior to resuming their Bundesliga title defence at Borussia Monchengladbach on January 24.
The Brazilian has claimed he is nearing a move to Old Trafford, but while his agent has confirmed the Red Devils’ interest in his client, he maintains there have been no talks
By Sam Lee
Manchester United are interested in signing Bayern Munich defender Dante, though the player's agent has warned any deal to take the player to the Premier League is far from close.
The Red Devils are long-term admirers of the Brazil international, having previously shown interest before he completed a move to the Allianz Arena from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2012, and continue to monitor his progress with the European champions.
Goal understands that Bayern are receptive to offers for the 30-year-old, having so far been unable to reach agreement on an extension to the defender's current contract which expires at the end of next season.
After being asked by Fox Sport Brasil if he had already signed for United, Dante said: "Not yet. I am still a Bayern player. I appreciate Manchester United's interest. At the end of the month it will be resolved."
But while Dante suggests a move to Old Trafford is close, his agent was keen to stress that at the moment he has not held talks with any club but Bayern, although he did admit that English football interests his client.
"He has two more years on his contract and we are now in the race to make a new contract, but at the moment we have not found a solution so we are still waiting for Bayern," Marcus Marin told Goal. "We are not in touch with any other clubs at the moment but in football you never know.
When asked specifically about Dante's quotes on Brazilian television and Manchester United's supposed interest, Marin replied: "No, I know that they follow him and we were in touch with Manchester [United] two years ago before [Dante] went to Bayern Munich, but at the moment I know only that they watch him at games, but we haven’t spoken to the club at the moment.
"We have not found a solution [with Bayern], so we are still in the race, but England is very interesting, Manchester United are a big club so you never know.
"Next month [Bayern] play in the next round of the Champions League against Arsenal and it is a good way to present himself in England. In the last game [in England] he played very well so yeah, we will see."
Dante was part of the Bayern Munich team that won the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, Champions League, Uefa Super Cup and Club World Cup in 2013, as well as the Brazil side that claimed the Confederations Cup last summer.
United's search for reinforcements has taken manager David Moyes across Europe, with the Scot present at Cagliari versus Juventus earlier this month to run the rule over home defender Davide Astori - as well as Juve midfielder Claudio Marchisio.
The Premier League champions have also held talks with Benfica regarding Argentine defender Ezequiel Garay.
Veteran defenders Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic look set to leave Old Trafford this summer having not been offered extensions to their current deals, which expire at the end of the season.
