So many things to cherish. Three points, first and foremost, moving us into fourth, only two points behind an increasingly uncertain Manchester City in third, and with a game in hand.

But, beyond that, the glorious performance of David Luiz; the way Michael Essien took control of the game in the second half; the constant unsettling of the United defence by Fernando Torres (and it won't matter if he never scores if the consequences of having him on the pitch are as draining for opponents and as ultimately destructive as this); Frank Lampard's penalty - almost unwatchable in the wake of the Everton shoot-out debacle; the sensational manner in which Didier Drogba independently orchestrated those four minutes of time added on, reducing United to pointlessly kicking him up in the air. All this, and 40,000 people shouting 'Shoot!' every time Ashley Cole got the ball. It was for nights like these, surely, that football was created.

Ancelotti may bench Torres.

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story/_/id/894770/carlo-ancelotti-hints-at-dropping-fernando-torres?cc=3888

He has to 4 strikers to rotate. Torres, Drogba, Kalou and Anelka.

Sao Paulo have confirmed that they have agreed a deal with Chelsea for Lucas Piazon.

The 17-year-old midfielder will move to the Premier League champions in January 2012, which is the first transfer window to open after he turns 18 later this year.

The deal is worth around £5.3million, 80 per cent of which goes to Sao Paulo, with rest divided between the player's camp.

Piazon has never played a senior game for Sao Paulo and is not to be confused with his team-mate Lucas, who recently starred alongside Neymar for Brazil's Under-20 side at the South American Youth Championship.

Chelsea have fought off interest from Juve to clinch his signature, after he underwent a medical in London earlier this month.

Piazon is yet to put pen-to-paper as he had to fly to Ecuador to participate in the South American Under-17 Championship.

Sao Paulo vice-president Carlos Augusto de Barros e Silva confirmed the deal was in place, and was done so they could pay for the signing of Luis Fabiano, who they brought back to Brazil last week.

"It is a big deal for the club," he confirmed.

"The value of it is almost the same as that of Luis Fabiano.

"He nearly joined Juventus earlier this year, but now everything has been resolved."

I'm still getting texts and emails from Liverpool fans of my acquaintance who can obviously barely contain themselves at the ticklesome fact that Fernando Torres hasn't scored yet and are very keen, for some reason, to share the fun with me.

Here's the most recent: 'IMPORTANT update on the Costalot Torres Golden Goal Time Competition. If you had February or March you've not won.'

Most amusing, no? Although not directly relevant to me, I have to say, because, as I pointed out to this text's sender, on my ticket I've got April and the next four or five seasons.

You don't have to be a psychologist to understand the joking, of course. It's a measure of what Torres meant, and clearly continues to mean, to Liverpool fans that they still can't stop thinking about him and continue to seem so sore about his sale.

They shouldn't be, though. After all, Andy Carroll will score again one day, too. Especially if his team mates keep pumping those long balls up to him.

In addition to the texts, the slightly irritating thing about the delayed arrival of Torres' first goal is the way it distorts the agenda, not just in the minds of Liverpool fans but almost everywhere.

For instance, on a day of burgeoning happiness for everyone connected with Chelsea, the increasingly masterful Ramires nips through the entire Manchester City defence and scores a goal (shown above in video) worthy of a Lionel Messi show reel - and instead of hailing this instant gem the papers largely ignore it in favour of carefully chosen snaps of Torres looking a bit gloomy.

Mind you, the cheekiest piece of reporting of the weekend pointed out, entirely correctly, that booing greeted Torres' substitution - but pointed it out in such a way as to allow the reader to infer that the crowd had jeered him off, when, quite clearly, of course, the dissatisfaction was at his withdrawal.

By and large, though, the Chelsea supporters I speak to seem entirely delighted with the presence of Torres - excited whenever he gets the ball and perfectly at ease with his somewhat unfortunate goallessness. Obviously, it would be nice if he scored one day quite soon, because then we could all stop talking about it and some of us could be excused the side-splitting texts from our Liverpool-supporting friends.

In the meantime, though, while the team continues to win and move upwards, it might be worth bearing in mind that the matter of Torres's goal tally is almost completely inconsequential in the bigger picture.

Many observers seem to think that, if a striker comes in for £50 million, then he needs to make tangible, goal-filled impact within three minutes of putting on his shirt, or the whole thing has been a giant waste of funds and energy.

But surely that's just to be dazzled by the sums involved. In fact, all common sense probably dictates that one should think the opposite - that a player who costs that much money must, unless the world has gone entirely mad, be a long-term investment, bought with the broader view in mind.

On those grounds, it would be have been perfectly reasonable if Torres had been instructed to spend the time between now and August (when, I would suggest, his real work begins) merely growing slowly accustomed to his new surroundings, acclimatising to Cobham, learning to work with his team mates, understanding the layout of the car park, getting to know where the towels are, and so on.

As it is, he got straight down to work, as evidenced by the fact that he has already made an impact - and an impact which, you could argue, was worth far more than the mere goals he might have had in the equivalent period.

For the fact is, before Torres came, the team was sinking into fifth place, had (in the verdict of Mr Ancelotti himself) been asleep for two months, could barely join three passes together, was strangely reluctant to shoot, had pretty much surrendered the title and, worse than that, was drifting slowly and dreamily out of contention for next year's European places.

Since Torres arrived, the team has woken up, regained a gritty and inspiring sense of purpose, learned to pass again, beaten Manchester United, moved up to third, pulled a fumbling Arsenal back into its sights, made the retention of the title a distant but not entirely fantastical proposition, and (on top of all that) qualified for the quarter finals of the Champions League. That's quite a difference for a player to make.

Annoyingly, the campaign now goes on hold again while we sit out another international weekend - football's equivalent of a dental check-up: always a depressing thing to see coming up in the diary, but something you just have to go through every now and again. Ah, well. As long as we get all our teeth back at the end of it.

great article

Premier League - Awards double for Chelsea

Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti and defender David Luiz have clinched the Premier League's manager and player of the month awards for March.

Chelsea's centre-back David Luiz, who joined the club from Benfica in January for £21.3 million has enjoyed an outstanding start to his career in the Premier League.

The Brazilian provided added impetus to Chelsea's title push, and scored crucial goals against both Manchester United and Manchester City.

Ancelotti receives the award for the second time this season and the third time in his career after guiding the Blues to three consecutive wins, which has propelled the champions into third place in the table.

Chelsea began the month with a hard-fought 2-1 victory against title rivals Manchester United, in which Luiz equalised with a crisp volley.

Ancelotti's side then comfortably beat Blackpool 3-1 at Bloomfield Road courtesy of a Frank Lampard double and a John Terry header.

The Blues' sterling month was finally rounded off with a 2-0 win against title-chasing rivals Manchester City as Luiz opened the scoring with a fine header.
