Situated in the Dragon’s Mouth between Trinidad and Venezuela, are five islands known as the Bocas Islands. They are Chacachacare, Monos, Gasparee, Huevos and Centipede Island.
They are different to the six small islands situated west of Port of Spain also referred to as Five Islands or Las Cotorras.
These small Islands are Caledonia Island, Nelson Island, Pelican Island, Rock Island, Lanagan Island and Craig Island.
Monos Island is the second largest of the Bocas Islands with an elevation of 287 metres at its highest point.
The island is mainly mountainous with steep cliffs occurring on the northern side.
The name Monos is a Spanish word that means monkeys and at one time red howler monkeys inhabited the island in large numbers.
Its calm waters, peacefulness and scenic coastline make it a top destination for a vacation get-away.
Spain ruled the region for three hundred years from 1498 to 1797 before handed it over to the British, who cultivated coconuts.
Today Sugar-Apple is a popular crop grown on the island. Whales at one time populated the Gulf of Paria, and at Monos there was a whaling station, but just like the monkeys they have all vanished.
During World War II (1940 to 1945), the region was leased to the Americans who at strategic locations built ammunition bunkers and cannons for the defence against German attack.
At that time, to visit there required a permit as recreational activities were suspended.
On August 25, 2005, the island’s reputation was "tarnished" as it became the scene for the country’s largest drug bust
