Dreamcast didnt have developer support & Wii is a somewhat different console.

I think that the 360 and ps3 are on the same footing with regard to the type of console and the gamer appeal. They can compete. So it is very important who releases the next gen console first.
Once there is a fanbase, developers will flock to it... at the end of the last gen, Sony was the unquestionable king of the Console gaming industry. That has changed for a few reasons:

360 was released first
360's hardware was easier to code for
360 was cheaper
XBOX Live was already well established and only got better

Now that PSN took this huge hit, it only makes things worse

You feel so? This generation of gaming has been overall lackluster IMO but Sony and the Playstation brand is going no where.

Another thing is that I think sony's PS3 will have a longer shelf life than the 360 because of its graphical and processing capabilities. But in the end wouldnt that work out to Sony's disadvantage, since it will force Microsoft to drop a new console sooner than Sony would like to?

makes sense. sony will be forced to launch when microsoft does. i doubt they will be unprepared as before. they will lose money again but it won't be as bad as before

Only reason 360 was ahead of the PS3 was because of the Price.

It was cheaper. Sony needs to learn this. in my opinion PS3 never needed a Blu Ray player.

Is just that Sony has a tradition of releasing the best and greatest regardless of price. Just look how expensive their HDTV and other electronics are. But its usually the best.

The Playstation brand on the whole is better than XBOX. The whole idea of proprietary is always more appealing. Everybody know Microsoft and are pretty much used to it. Microsoft Game Studio dont sound as sophisticated as Sony Computer Entertainment.

If you look at say PS3 Menu system its very Apple Like. The graphics and stuff is like if Sony hired Apple to design their GUI. Sales on PS3 vs 360 is pointless.

Also ask anyone on steam forums. Games for Windows Live By Microsoft is a curse to PC gaming. The whole reason that so many PC games do so bad in sales is not piracy but GFWL itself. People prefer steamworks. Thats why steamworks titles does better. You don't see valve complaining about poor games sales now do you.

So seriously Microsoft kinda fails in Gaming. After having a taste of their GFWL I didn't want anything to do with them. I wanted something new and sophisticated. Heck PS3 even uses Nvidia GPU.

Owning a xbox is like owning a AMD and owning a PS3 is like owning a Intel. Its as simple as that

The design, marketing and power easily destroys the 360.

I think what a lot of gamers prefer in the 360 is the controller and I think sony needs to address this. If I had both consoles I would buy multi platform games only for the 360 because of its superior controller minus fighting games offcourse. Sucks badly on 360 dpad crap. XBOX clearly has its advantages.

But now in 2011 its lost that grip to sony. Sony has all the exclusives that people want. Why would anyone buy a 360 now? it makes no sense. Back in 2006 yeah maybe but not anymore.

Just look at Forza, that game is a Joke compared to Gran Turismo 5 and an imitation.
Look at the time and money Sony spent on GT5. Anything that tries to compete with that is a Joke. Sony is very serious about first party gaming. They do not mix matters. When they make a game they destroy everyone. Same with Nintendo. Nintendo first party games is immortal in the gaming world.

But what good first party games xbox has? Halo? thats a joke if you ask me.
I rather get God of War series. Greek Mythology > Over used stale Space Marines FPS anyday.

I was comparing business models for each. The PS3 got in behind the curve, making a spectacular messy splash, operated in red until the slim. Its more expensive to code for the PS3, resulting in plenty multi-platforms looking and operating better on a cheaper XBOX than one featuring the all mighty CELL (from DBZ ).

I have owned all Playstation consoles. I prefer Playstation, but it doesn't take much to see that the PS3 and by extension the Sony brand took a huge hit, even before the damned hackers (Console wise and PSN). This console cycle featured online gaming and Microsoft beat Sony, proving that they knew all along the deciding factor would have never been overall console sales but an engaged consumer base (just like apple...ironically) hence their lack of complacency where their XBOX brand was concerned...(Sony?)

I also agree with a few points you make.

I mentioned I never cared for Blu Ray and the almighty cell CPU. Its so underused due to xbox 360 ports onto the PS3 that it ain't even funny. XBOX games tend to look slightly better than the PS3 in multi platform games that is. Call of Duty does look better on 360 due to higher texture details. Its only exclusives look better.

Both consoles are nice eh. the slim 360 has that piano black finish on it which I prefer over the PS3 slim matte finish. And as I mention the 360 controller is so comfortable. Best I ever held. Before I buy my PS3 I did careful research. I always do this.
But at the end of the day the PS3 simply had the exclusives that I wanted. The only regret is I wont get to play Alan Wake. But Heavy Rain go make up for that hopefully.

you right on the part where its always more difficult to code for this is nothing new with Sony.

PS2 was the most difficult machine to program on. But Metal gear Solid 3 snake eater and God of War 2 did manage to prove that even the Almighty Nvidia GPU geforce 3 Ti to be more spefific, still could not match the power of the PS2 in the likes of god of war and metal gear solid. And did you know the PS3 Emotion Engine CPU was only 295MHZ while the xbox 1 was 700 mhz intel?

To be more specific here is the xbox 1 cpu

Custom 733 MHz Intel Pentium III "Coppermine-based" processor

No seriously that is light years ahead of the Sony EE. It is intel after all we talking about, yet somehow sony proved the EE and GS was still more powerful why is that?
It goes to show just how awesome the hardware in the PS2 was and how much ahead of its time it was. Sony builds good stuff. Just required a master mind to program for. But when it did was obvious who the winner was. Doh forget the PS2 was developed in the late 90's

This isn't as bad as it could have been -- Sony's PSN hasn't exactly been hacked again -- but what can only be described as a glaring oversight looks to have forced the company into hastily switching off PSN logins on its websites. The issue? If you legitimately forget your password and need to reset it, previously all you had to do was type in your e-mail address and date of birth, then choose a delightfully cunning new password. Sounds good? The problem is that if you were a PSN member before the hack then both your e-mail address and your date of birth (plus a lot of other frightening stuff) is known to the hackers. So, whoever has the millions of rows of data that were exposed could, in theory, re-exploit any account. Sony was made aware of the issue and those pages are now offline again, which should make the Japanese government feel just a little big smug.

Some Xbox 360s won't read discs; Microsoft to comp owners with a new system, year of XBL



There may have been a good reason for that wide beta test Microsoft ran to test out its new disc format for the Xbox 360. While it will allow for an extra 1GB of storage space for new games and (it hopes) stop piracy, apparently some consoles contain drives that cannot read the new XGD3 discs.

The details can be seen in the email pictured above posted by Reddit user Avery Penn and were verified as real by the Xbox Support Twitter account, but now it's responding to inquiries by saying that the replacements are in response to a previous update, and not the upcoming one that has been in beta.

Confusingly, Microsoft Europe confirmed the initial report and points affected users towards the support page. One way or another, affected owners can expect to be mollified by getting their Xbox 360s replaced with new 250GB Xbox 360S models plus a free year of XBL for the trouble.
