'Why are those prison trucks speeding?'

Postby stikid09 » November 20th, 2017, 1:17 pm

Member of Parliament for Tabaquite Suruj Rambachan wants an explanation as to why Amalgamated Security trucks, which transports prisons to and from Court, drive recklessly on the nation's roadways.

“Not because Amalgamated Security is transporting prisoners on the road do they have the right to abuse the roadways and to abuse others on the road. And they are doing that on a very frequent basis,” he said on Friday, as he contributed to the debate on the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic (Amendment) Bill 2017.

Rambachan said just Friday morning, around 6.15, he encountered a speeding pick-up van owned by the company and decided to follow it just to see how fast it was going.

“In the vicinity of the Divine Life Society (Chaguanas) here comes a panel van owned by Amalgamated Security, black smoke emanating from this vehicle and the vehicle is at a tremendous speed going down the highway. I had to drive at 150 km to pick up with the vehicle after the vehicle passed me,” he said.

He also criticised Jusamco PAvers Limited trucks driving at “break-neck” speed on the highway.

“I see Jusamco trucks at the M2 Ring Road and I speak to the driver asking why are you breaking the Woodland Crossover and not waiting, they say they have a certain number of trips to make for the day, and therefore they are driving at breakneck speed.”

Rambachan said just recently he almost ran into the back of a truck, bearing the name BK, as its lights were covered in dirt and not visible.

“I drive up the highway every night. I leave Fyzabad at 6 p.m. or 6.30 p.m. every night and I'm coming up the highway in the vicinity of Claxton Bay and there was this truck and all I'm seeing is the silhouette because the streetlights were not working. I got up about 60km behind this truck and suddenly realised it was a truck in front of me.

“And the truck number was TBG 2309 belonging to a company called BK. I could have run into the back of that truck,” he said.

He noted:

“I think that while we also deal with speed we also have to have a more vigilant Police Service that is not only there with the cameras to pick up people at Golconda and outside C3 but in dealing with these kinds of things that are happening on the road.

On another note, Rambachan believed some fatal accidents were not only caused by speeding but due to the poor state of roads.

He pointed to the “deadly” potholes in the vicinity of Mosquito Creek, La Romaine.

“Potholes have been known to cause serious accidents and death by accident and right now Mr. Minister of Works there is a serious, serious problem on Mosquito Creek. There are potholes there that can cause death and I am saying that without reservation. It is an obstacle course, so sometimes you can be pulling on to the traffic and on to the wall that borders the sea,” he said.

What hindrance is there to having a centralized Magistrate Court whereby the Prison and court in more or less the same place? Why must a Princess Town or Mayaro perp be kept at Orange Grove to be transported every day and in plenty cases only for an adjournment to take place.

Case adjournment is how lawyers and Magistrate become millionaires. Don't study it, that's how T&T is for years.

It have Skype-and apparently the prisons have excellent wifi and cell signal-the amount of FB
Why in 2017 are we not having video/camera/internet based court appearances??

As to Suruj-steups...the whole UNC front line seems to justhave found out about the right ways to do everything-having been blind up to 2015.

Yeah. I thought the whole approach to speak about it publicly like that is just to encourage "lobbying" to be provided.

That intersection at Woodland & the M2 is scary at times. At all 4 sides there are stop signs but vehicles on the M2 speed pass. It causes alot of traffic pileup especially on mornings.
But before all this, Woodland Road is the major road, the M2 was the tasker road.

This don't really solve the problem, because in POS the Jail and the Court is 2 footsteps away but those trucks easily pass 80kmph on a busy Pembroke Street.

I ask this same question as in a modern age we should be using technology however the response was it is actually enshrined in our (old ) constitution laws

everyone has the right to fair trial and the right to stand before his / her accusers in a court of law.

what you a referring to sir is BROADCASTING something on live TV

what redman is saying is using technology to have the prisoner appear in court.

those are two different things

using technology to have the prisoner appear in court is what is needed / required

using television to have it broadcasted to the entire population <<what youre suggesting >>makes what sense now ?????

So change the definition of before...to include the image...or put a court of law in a room in the prison for the video conferencing purpose.

Or make it an elective so that an accused can chose video trial...and be rewarded with a faster trial.
