Sins.... you guys need to call a meeting of all clubs and permit holders... it absurd the of the amount of rubbish one man who is in charge of policing in this country can say and not be challenged.... from the way things looking it's going to end up in a legal battle..

Another Letter thus far unpublished

Top Cops Confused on Air Rifles

Good Day all , as an interested and licensed air rifle enthusiast. The comments of the embattled Police Commissioner and top brass of the police service on the the topic of Air Rifles , need much more clarification. The current legislation governing firearms in Trinidad and Tobago is the Firearms Act 16.01 of 1972 last updated in 2011 . Like so many prices of our legislation it is quite outdated . However this legislation does not cover air guns

The license for air guns prescribes .177 smooth bore air rifles. Main manufacturers have long moved away from smooth bore to rifled bore , because of the poor accuracy of smooth bore . Many persons use these guns to practice , competitive targets, rodent and pest control.

In a pure functional capacity the air guns prescribed by some legislation are synonymous to a gun used in the American Civil War in the operation of the prescribed air gun. Currently there is petition to be taken to the relevant authorities with more than 400 signatures to change this legislation/ legal postion. To the COP: Do you know that many of these air guns cost twice or thrice as much as the real legal deal ?

Regards,
Toco Loco equally Confused

You guys need to tread carefully, as in most dealings with police
They do not like to be told what to do or put out of authority regardless of the situation.

Well, this isn't about police being putvout of authority u kno pb, or even telling them what to do.
This whole thing is about 2 lines in the legislation that a lot of ppl realize has absolutely no sane, logical, rational reason to remain as it is any more. What we are allowed now, .177 smooth bore, was prescribed by Solomon Hochoy, waaaay back when, for a reason that nobody knows. And commonsense would lead to the logic of if there be no reason for a law or section of a law, then keep it on the books when only a few benefit from it at the expense of the majority?

The solution to all this is so easy to see. Repeal those two lines in the act. Dealers no longer have to worry about needing to place special orders for smoothbore barrels, prices will go down, sportspersons willing to train for Olympic and international events will be able to do so, with money out their own.pockets and not risk being turned into a criminal for want of representing your nation.

But as usual here, they will see a pebble in the road, then try to convince everyone is a mountain that can't and shouldnt even be looked at.

if you think so,
but i doubt govt would change a law/rule just so without consultation with the existing authority
even if it is not a law change then guess what, it is the police cop who has to change the "two lines" in the little permit letter

so it is about police at the end of the day

Right now, the "existing authority" are the TTPS, dealers, & those who've been benefiting from the law as it has always stood.
& if an officer could sit & actually say, that a.177 airgun is gust as powerful as a firearm handgun, well the easiest way to prove it is to show it. Comparative ballistic testing would be the easiest way to prove it.

not at all. The TTPS can do some things, but setting or amending legislation isnt one of those things.

New=dealer
Anything else=used.

This brings me to an important point. Be careful when buying used .177 airguns from people. Inspect it properly and thoroughly before buying. More than a few people have told me that there have been instances of persons selling illegal equipment to unsuspecting buyers looking for airguns that are smoothbore. And from what I've seen, this isn't limited to private citizens. I believe we all big enough to know what will happen if the TTPS found anyone with a airgun with a rifled .177 barrel in their possession and no F.U.L. for it.

Be careful fellas.

Went to Centerfire recently , they have some nitro piston air guns , for the men interested in "sentrying " , these guns can stay cocked for much longer than a springer I was told. Easier loading as well.

What is the rationale for the smooth bore limitation?
