Anybody knows anything about staining pitch pine wood?

Postby rambo22 » September 10th, 2016, 12:54 pm

As the topic states. I am building a small Pitch Pine cupboard, these are the steps I took:

1. Sand wood with 220 sand paper
2. Sanding Seal with Sissons sealer (Brush on)
3. Sand again with 220 sand paper
4. Apply Sissons Stain with soft cloth

The problem is stain blotching its like two tone, not even.
I have no experience in the field...literally. Any advice will be appreciated.

What he said. Stain goes on before sealer.

Yeah u shoulda forget about sanding sealer
There are some nice water based clear you could put on after the stain, no sanding sealer needed

this article says to seal before staining

Seal Pine Before Staining
Woods like cherry, pine and birch can become blotchy and unattractive when stained, unless you use a sealer before staining.

The key is to apply a thin base coat to partially seal the wood before staining. Sanding sealers, dewaxed shellac and wipe-on finishes will all do the trick.

Let the sealer dry for a few hours. Then sand the wood lightly with 220-grit paper before applying stain.

You can also do the steps 1-3 you took then for step 4, mix the sealer with the stain and apply.
You can start with a light tint and continue to darken as needed.
I used mahogany and walnut Sissons stains on pitch pine and plywood using the steps you did and it came out okay.
What i did was wipe off as soon as I applied the stain. I found that the type of wood used mattered, so you can experiment with your methods on a test piece.
You can also just coat the pitch pine in good quality polyurethane varnish to get a pleasant yellow tint to it.

Sanding sealer has to be applied with a specific type of thinners, the brand may also help.
You have to let it dry good. The thinners for the stain also comes with the same cavaet.

Check your thinners. Oil paint thinners is not recommended. You need a lacquer thinners.
Be careful, use in an open area as you will feel the effects.
Also some products are still on the shelf after the expiry date.

I have used the OSAKA Brand oil thinners which seems to have some potential.
You can give the makers a call at 657-3549. Mixing the sealer with the stain may cause blotching and the finish may be darker than you want. It will get dark over time. So its best to start with a light colour.

I have found gas washes out the sealer from brushes very easily.
You can also check a furniture maker.

Sherwin williams has a very good sealer/conditioner and the oil based Miswak stains. Careful NOT to use a too fine sandpaper on pitch pine (220 and over). The wood heats up quickly and the oils polish the surface preventing the stain from taking or it takes blotchy.

Use an 80 Grit for the first sand, seal, sand again with 100 grit and then stain with rag.... you don't need to sand again after staining. With the SW water based varnish you can varnish then use a 220 grit to smooth out after it dries then reapply varnish again. Use the satin varnish.... real nice natural subtle finished look.

I just noticed something. A desk and wall cupboard was done for me and finished with lacquer. it was blotchy. The wife went and got an oil varnish with stain – Mahogany. One coat in they tail went I went to work. Wow, when I came home it was iniform and with time it has gotten more so.

Let it dry and if it is still the same then consider redoing. Also follow the proviso of doing a little area. If you like, then finish it.

Next time buy the real type of wood so you don't need to stain it to fake the look
All you will need is a simple clear coating
