Like a school Driver's Ed type thingy?

Correct. My 4 year old can drift around a corner in GT4 in a Lancia Delta on a PS2.... Children have the motor skills to start learning from small.. but of course not the maturity to accept liability on the roads.

imo this will affect young persons looking for jobs, going to school and helping out parents to run errands (like dropping siblings of to school etc).

Also if someone leaves school at 17 and works, by 19 when they can legally drive (if change is enacted) , they most likely accumulate more funds for a vehicle of their own (my very own need for speed). Whereas when you are 17, you could barely afford anything, most likey will be driving older hand me downs (slow older vehicles) or borrow parents car (with severe consequences if you mess up their ride)

At any age young drivers are still risky. In the past I go in an accident with a 30yr+ female that just got license less than 2 months, my $0.02

no, make defensive driving a MANDATORY course.

Like how every engineering programme has a health and safety course.
A car is a basically a large power tool at the end of the day.

I think there needs to be better collision avoidance teachings such as the cars equipped with mechanism to put the car into a skid and you're thought how to steer out of it, along with other courses to be part of defensive driving course and not just to slides for an extent of awareness that people are usually half asleep for, based on being to classes before.

We need more like him

Let them be upset...

Laws are seldom iron-clad guaranteed solutions. It's a step in the right direction though

Getting a permit is no problem, it's getting insurance that is the problem unless your parents back you up

I think we should remove the whole notion of a driving test and replace it with a mandatory cycle of training via regulated training driving schools inclusive of defensive driving courses. Something like 120 hours of mandatory training which includes classroom and road training and then you get the permit. The schools have to properly regulated with certified instructors and proper audit trails on who passes through the system.

Thoughts?

So you can get married at 16 have a child 16, vote at 18, but you can't drive at 19.

That is progress

Who is the "you" that could get married at 16 ?

agreed. i saw a documentary some time when a 12 year old boy jump in the toyota 4x4 to pull a range out of some mud somewhere in Australia. His father was outside in the mud giving directions. I think most of our parents started driving somewhere between 12 and 14.

We don't get proper driver training here. In fact when you go for license they give you a lil 2 page pamphlet not even the full regs to study and you can more than pass with that. Its not gonna change if you 16 or 19, you'll just be older and still not know how to drive.

They could raise the age to whatever, not going to change the fact that it have plenty big hardback mature folks who just can't drive properly.

I think the age for youngsters to get their learners permit should be lowered. Isn't skill attained through practice? They should be given learners permits when 16. Schools should implement drivers Ed and the age you take your driving test raised to 18. So theoretically they'll have 2 years practical and theoretical experience.
