Hi guys.
This Saturday I bought Sailfin Tang from Raj in Pasea.... Since then I can't make him eat. The thing is - fish is hungry and trying to catch the food together with other fish in aquarium, but every time food passes next his mouth.... It's not like he doesn't want the food, it seems like he can't get it in his mouth or something.
I noticed that he already loosing his weight slowly....
And I am not happy at all!!!!
650 dollars for the fish! And now I'm watching it melting in front of my eyes because he can't grasp food?!?!
That is ridiculous!

I have no idea what is wrong with the fish. Fish looked very healthy and active.... the only thing I noticed is that Raj kept the fish in a very small space isolated from other fish....
So I thought maybe he needs more time to adapt to 100 gallons reef tank, but so far he should acclimatize for sure.
Also I can't understand that Tang doesn't even try to eat some hairy algae which I have little on one rock.... considering that they like eating algae as well.

Any idea what's wrong with the fish and what to do with it.
Thanks.

I just made a video of my Sailfin....
I had some kind of aquarium all my life, but I've never seen something like this before.
He simply can't get the food in his mouth!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCgOX6xNlgY&feature=youtu.be

So, because he wasn't able to catch any of food which I'm giving to my other fish (frozen brine shrimp cube)... i gave him some pallets in the quiet corner of aquarium without strong curent (and because I know Raj feeding fish with pallets).... and you can see how he is trying to eat them and can't. He is doing like that for hours and nothing
I don't know what to do with the fish. Raj told me he has it since December and guarantee it is healthy fish... but it can't eat since Saturday!
I'm afraid it could be sick or something and infect my other fish which are very happy healthy and normal!

Any idea or advice please.

it does't seem like the fish is interested in the pellets. Maybe you can try soaking the food in garlic to raise its appetite an it should help with it's immune system. I bought a Kole eye tang from him and for a while he was very shy but he was eating algae he near takes pellet food but will accept mysis shrimp.

Try feeding him nori. At first my tang didn't ea it but now he does.

I don't think that appetite is a problem. He is chasing food together with other fish (frozen cube).... and I observe carefully what he's doing - he swim towards the piece of food open his mouth to swallow it and then he miss it - food goes away from his mouth.... sometimes he turns back to chase it again and miss it again and again....
He is fast like other fish behave in the same way - the only thing is that other fish swallow their food and he miss it every time

I tried to soak food in garlic yesterday as well - and no change, I even gave him a peace of shrimp meat (which use to feed my anemone) he also wanted to eat it and miss it.... hippo tang though came and stole it from him - she never miss hehehe

I am really confused with this fish. I saw him yesterday for the first time that he is trying to eat algae, but I wasn't sure did he miss the algae as well.

(By the way, I am from Europe, so my English is not perfect - forgive me if I write something stupid.)

I'm not sure what might be wrong with him except he may not be interested in the food given to him. Sailfin tangs are known to eat a lot of algae so maybe try tying a piece of nori on a rock in the tank and see if he eats it. My Kole eye tang is a glutton and sometimes it appears like my yellow tang isn't eating but he eats some mysis shrimp and picks at the rock and the nori. So far he seems ok.

One question.

What do you think about LED lights? I mean, how many watts per gallon do you use?

I have these lights:

Image

330 Watts (2 X 165 W)
Aquarium is 90 gallons (which means 3.6 Watts per gallon), water depth 24 inch, lights are 10 inches above the water surface.

It seems that is too much light because some polyps lost their color intensity.... especially those placed higher in aquarium.

I decreased intensity on 80% today (which should be 2.93 Watts per gallon) and will observe what's going on.

What is your experience and opinion about this?

It depends on the amount of fish you have. I have 20 tilapia in a IBC tote(250gal) and they last a good 3-4 hours without power.

I have 11 fishes and some corals.....T&Tec announced power will be out for appox. 8 hours. So I wondering if I need backup power or will they survive that long..

I think you should get backup power.
I am thinking about getting a generator for cases like these.
