Walk with extra rope and learn mountain climbing.

ok...I am interested in trying lure fishing. The rod i have is a surf rod and it is very tiring to do cast and retrieve with it. The fellas at work recommend ugly stik 8 foot bigwater rod but I don't know... What is a good starter rod and reel?

Well if you serious about plugging, lots of casts are the order of the day so I would recommend that you buy a decent setup from the get go, it'll be easier on your shoulder and a much more pleasant experience in the long run. Ugly sticks are very good rods but it's old school glass construction and much heavier than graphite rods. Locally at mankees you can check out the penn battalion surf rods and pair it with a light, good casting reel like a stradic or spheros sw 5000, fill up with 20 lb braid and you're set. Rod selection will depend on what lure weight range you'll be casting according to the locations you like. Just match the rating, generally a 9 -11 ft rod with a medium action will be able to fish a range of situations and lures.
