10,000 used-car workers may face breadline

Postby Duane 3NE 2NR » January 14th, 2016, 6:42 pm

THE foreign-used car industry may have to retrench more than 10,000 workers since no packages for quotas of vehicles have been issued.
This according to head of the Trinidad and Tobago Automotive Dealers Association (TTADA) Visham Babwah.
Members of TTADA met on Tuesday at the P&V Automotive headquarters of TTADA in Chaguanas.
Babwah said the recession has slowed sales and used-car dealers have not received any quota letters for the year.
He said some dealers have run out of stock and have had no choice but to halt operations.
Babwah said TTADA held discussions with Minister of Trade Paula Gopee-Scoon in October on the issue, but “the association’s pleas may have fallen on deaf ears”.

new car prices are dropping + 100% financing and a maximum loan term of 7.5 years is gonna hurt them as well

How are those figures estimated? More than 10,000?
They can't sell cars but yet they know the economic outcome of their industry?
As the article said, it was slowed sales, not a drastic change, so they unfortunately knew this was coming for some time now.

With a fairly decent local used car market, is there as much need for foreign used options?

Last year was the same thing they were beating up in January for their quotas.

Have you see the prices of local used cars? Compare a 6 year old local used car and the same car 6 year old RoRo. Which do you think is cheaper. ? Plus some people think that because they have a new car and it's still on warranty they could treat their car like chit... The next owner would deal with it.

Not everyone. Why buy a 10 to 15 year old local used roro with high mileage for 70k when you can get a newer one for a little more. Just look on tuner and tcfs. The overpriced vehicles have long threads of only bumps for months and even years....the smartly priced ones which are few and far between go quickly.

I don't understand your warranty argument considering that most new vehicles come with warranties of 2-4 years or something like 80k-100k km [whichever comes first]. In order to maintain said warranty, the vehicle needs to be serviced by the dealer during that period. Even so, it does not cover components that are subject to wear, so why would an owner treat a new vehicle badly?

Every year this happens tho. I don't think this is Gov't policy , just bureaucracy and late processing of licenses

The only people digging out anyone's eyes is the new cars dealers who offer poorly equipped vehicles with a lackluster warranty plan..while implementing pricing strategies that are outrageous that do not cater to the poor man who is trying to increase their standard of living.

Never had a RORO vehicle, but the prices I've seen seem reasonable, still won't buy one due to that roll back mileage nonsense.
