Local Las Cuevas ~ In Loving Memory of a Fellow Surfer - Kyle Gonsalves

"Death leaves heartache no one can heal, but love leaves memories no one can steal"

Dearest Kyle,

Although as adults we seldom crossed paths, you are pervasive throughout my childhood memories; forever the boisterous wild child in the group, playing pranks, getting up to mischief and making everyone laugh.

I am fairly certain the first time I was ever burned with a donkey eye it was from you

Every sandball and jellyfish fight was instigated by you and Kevin ....oh how you fellas could bobolize us younger ones Erin ,Kacie ,Paige, Lisa, Kimi , Troy - but it was all good because you would always let us bury you in the sand after smile emoticon

The first time I ever went boogie boarding was with you...Erin and I used your board and then proceeded to steal it every weekend when you weren't looking until our parents finally bought us our own.

I have so many fond Easter and summer holiday memories with you in Blanchicheusse, Tobago, down d islands; on Gasparee, sneaking over to fantasy island on the "secret paths" to ride the slides, and waking up early to feed bread to the footballers off the jetty.

How many times did we arrive at Maracas as kids and follow your lead, racing into the water before our parents could catch us to slather us in the dreaded sunblock.

Naturally you were one of the many (if not the first child) to buss their chin diving into my parents pool after they said no diving. There were so many fun nights playing "smallman", "ghost", hide and seek, catch.... Of course somehow we would always find a way to break something or get into trouble.

I think there are still remnants of Nickelodeon gak on my bedroom ceiling from you throwing it up there, and my bed was supported by books for years after we all broke it pretending it was a bouncy castle.....when our parents asked what had happened we acted as if we had no knowledge of anything which inevitably led us to more trouble.

In some ways you were like the big brother I never had and I am eternally grateful to have had you in my life. Gone too soon, you will be dearly missed.

May your soul rest in eternal peace Kyle Gonsalves and watch over your family and your wife until you are reunited again.

Keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers. Love ash xx

~ Ashley Marie ~

Surfers Come Together at Las Cuevas to Honour One of Their Own - Kyle Gonsalves.

“A ‘Paddle Out’ is the way surfers around the world honour their dead.
It is a floating memorial service with flowers, leis or wreaths.
Surfers take to the water paddling out beyond the break.
Straddling their boards to form a circle,
They hold hands in union with one another and their fallen fellow.
Someone speaks words of remembrance then the surfers send up hoots, whistles or chants.
Clasped hands are raised then lowered to splash the surrounding waters.
Flowers are thrown into the centre of the circle followed by a few moments of silence.
Finally, pointing their boards to the sky, the surfers turn slowly toward the shore
Flowers swirling in the water behind them.

Local Tobago ~ Manchineel Tree - Death Apple

This tree in the Americas is so toxic, you can’t stand under it when it rains

In 1999, radiologist Nicola Strickland went on a holiday to the Caribbean island of Tobago, a tropical paradise complete with idyllic, deserted beaches. On her first morning there, she went foraging for shells and corals in the white sand, when the holiday quickly took a turn for the worse.

Scattered amongst the coconuts and mangoes on the beach, Strickland and her friend found some sweet-smelling green fruit that looked much like small crabapples. Both foolishly decided to take a bite, and within moments the pleasant, sweet taste was overwhelmed by a peppery, burning feeling and an excruciating tightness in the throat that gradually got so bad they could barely swallow.

The fruit in question belonged to the manchineel tree (Hippomane mancinella), sometimes referred to as 'beach apple' or 'poison guava'. It's native to the tropical parts of southern North America, as well as Central America, the Caribbean, and parts of northern South America.

The plant bears another name in Spanish, arbol de la muerte, which literally means "tree of death". According to the Guinness World Records, the manchineel tree is in fact the most dangerous tree in the world. As explained by the Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, all parts of manchineel are extremely poisonous, and "interaction with and ingestion of any part of this tree may be lethal".

Manchineel belongs to the large and diverse Euphorbia genus, which also contains the decorative Christmas poinsettia. The tree produces a thick, milky sap, which oozes out of everything - the bark, the leaves and even the fruit - and can cause severe, burn-like blisters if it comes into contact with the skin.

This sap contains a range of toxins, but it's thought that the most serious reactions come from phorbol, an organic compound that belongs to the diterpene family of esters. Because phorbol is highly water-soluble, you don't even want to be standing under a manchineel when it's raining - the raindrops carrying the diluted sap can still severely burn your skin.

Because of these horrifying properties, in some parts of the tree's natural range they are painted with a red cross, a red ring of paint, or even paired with explicit warning signs. We could just remove them, but they play a valuable role in the local ecosystems - as a large shrub, the manchineel grows into dense thickets that provide excellent windbreaking and a protection against coastal erosion on Central American beaches.

There have been reports of severe cases of eye inflammation and even temporary blindness causes by the smoke of burning manchineel wood - not to mention the effects of inhaling the stuff. However, Caribbean carpenters have been using manchineel wood in furniture for centuries - after carefully cutting it and drying in the sun to neutralise the poisonous sap.

"The real death threat comes from eating its small round fruit," Ella Davies writes for the BBC. "Ingesting the fruit can prove fatal when severe vomiting and diarrhoea dehydrate the body to the point of no return."

Fortunately, Strickland and her friend lived to tell the tale, because they only ate a tiny amount of death apple. In 2000, Strickland published a letter in The British Medical Journal, describing her symptoms in detail.

It took over 8 hours for their pain to slowly subside, as they carefully sipped pina coladas and milk. The toxin went on to drain into the lymph nodes on their necks, providing further agony. "Recounting our experience to the locals elicited frank horror and incredulity, such was the fruit's poisonous reputation," Strickland wrote. "We found our experience frightening

Local Rancho Quemedo Estate ~ Erin Mud Volcano

Med Trekkers Camping Trip 2015.

The Rancho Quemado Estate, located in Siparia, spans 45 acres, 25 of which has been rehabilitated. Within a year of initial rehabilitation, the cocoa production on the estate quadrupled.

5000 Trinidad Select Hybrid (TSH) clones that were planted in January 2009 are now boasting beautiful pods from which, Cocobel’s world class cocoa and chocolate products are made.

However, Rancho does not only produce cocoa but also honey, citrus and tilapia.

The estate has recently opened for tours geared towards schools and families, who can learn about the processing of cocoa and honey.

There is also a pond where visitors can fish for the tilapia and sheds can be rented for a family picnic amongst the cocoa trees and a mini zoo

The Erin Mud Volcano where the truly adventurous took a bath in the mineral-rich mud before washing off at the Los Iros beach, a short educational talk on the farming and processing of cocoa, a scavenger hunt throughout the plantation, watching a thrilling movie under the stars, and an opportunity to catch the remaining moments of the sunset while warming up around the campfire enjoying s’mores.

Local Carnival 2016 ~ Feature Article

Not your Parents’ Carnival ~ Times change, and Carnival Changes with it — For Better or For Worse?

Look at photographs from the Carnival parade fifty years ago, and there are things that don’t seem to have changed much: the layout of the main stage at the Queen’s Park Savannah, the joy and abandon of the masqueraders in their spotlight moment, the advertising hoardings in the background.

But there’s much that’s obviously different in those archival images: the design of the costumes, the scale and organisation of the bands, even the gender of the masqueraders — women nowadays dominate most mas bands, by a wide margin.

And there are more profound differences that photos can’t capture, in the logistics and economics of the festival.

Carnival is a season of creativity and commercialism that dominates the first two months of every year in T&T.

But it’s also — and always has been — a kind of battleground for certain social ideas, for notions of cultural identity.

Over the two centuries in which the twin islands have evolved from colonies into a postcolonial nation, Carnival has evolved too
